Editor's Note: This is the second of a three-part series dealing with the Irvine Ranch which marks its 100th anniversary this year. By JOHN N. POWER Managing Editor While jet age living and urbanization has made inroads within the confines of the giant Irvine Ranch — agriculture has by no means taken a back seat. In other words the ranch is an excellent model combination of agriculture, industry, residential and water development and last but not least, education facilities. The sprawling ranch, first established in 1864 by James Irvine, is not only maintaining its agricultural tradition, but is actually stepping up its permanent agricultural interests. Since six years ago, with cattle still roaming its many hills, over 1,500 acres of citrus groves have been planted in the fertile valley below. Research Projects Underway With 22,000 acres under cultivation at the present time and an ever increasing diversification toward specialty crops, the ranch is encouraging new research in various agricultural fields. Dominating the citrus are the new Valencias with resistant root stock that defies a disease known to growers as "Tristeza" that has plagued groves throughout Southern California. With the expected termination of the bracero program the end of this year, the ranch has started a giant research program to find new ways to harvest its crops without the need of stoop labor. In the field of industry, creation of a unique industrial land use plan is being implemented by the Irvine Company. This plan stresses a park-like atmosphere for facilities — it provides all the economic advantages of the space age. The first 2,600-acre phase of 6,000-acre industrial development has been deeded to a newly-owned subsidiary, Irvine Industrial Complex, whose business will be to sell and lease land and build industrial facilities. Described as "ideally suited for development as an industrial area" by Charles S. Thompson president, The Irvine Company the area is unique in that it CAMEO SHORES is a beautiful new residential community just south of Corona del Mar overlooking the blue Pacific. Weekend Hawaiian Jamboree Delights Legion Younger Set Second annual American Legion Junior Jamboree Sunday and Monday was held at Newport Beach, complete with slumber party American Legion daughters age 12 to 18 years were invited to the two-day event and permitted to bring girl friends. The theme was Hawaiian and the girls all wore muu-muu. Registration opened Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Newport Beach American Legion facility. Slated for the occasion was a full schedule on the beach, in boats and at a barbecue on the grounds, bay front. Mrs. Keith Green of Bra was chairman of the event. After a Sunday night dinner a show, "Route 29, East Pacific" provided a satire on "South Pacific." Members of Orange County Posts Auxiliaries and junior auxiliaries provided the entertainment. Later "The Traditionals", a four piece combo, entertained. Four Fullerton Junior College students donated their for this. At midnight the M.Dancers of Newport Beach entertained with a 15-minute show during a late supper. The girls attending the boree then retired in bags to listen to their orders and transistors. Beach Auxiliary members pared all the food. Unit Chairmen of Orange were chaperones. Parents retrieved their in the late afternoon. It took seven hours and 36 innings of softball, but the Lionettes took the Regional tourney Sunday — barely. The locals needed only to win one of the two contests with the Whittier Gold Sox Sunday and they had to fight tooth and nail to achieve that victory. After being defeated 1-0 in the opening game, the Lionettes bat- only 35 minutes from Los Angeles' Civic Center, 18 minutes from the deep water port of Long Beach, and just a few minutes from major recreational areas. The ranch already houses a significant variety of industries. The Aeronutronic Research and Science Center, of Philco's Aeronutronic Division occupies 200 acres and an 800,000 sq. ft. complex of modern buildings. Collins Radio's Information Science Center now occupying its 120,000 sq. ft. first building, plans to build several more on its 178-acre site. Commercial Development Plan In the company's master plan that envisions a future resident population of as many as 270,000 in the 34,000 acre coastal area of the ranch, over 1,000 acres have been set aside for commercial developments. These include a number of small neighborhood shopping centers as well as two large central commercial districts, Newport Center and University Town Center. Plans are now being completed for 750,000 square foot regional shopping center as the first phase of the huge Newport Center — financial, cultural and civic center complex destined for the area adjacent to the existing Irvine Coast Country Club at the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach. University Town Center will be located adjacent to the university of California, Irvine campus. This will be a university town center oriented to needs of a student-faculty munity with office buildings, hotels, recreation centers and other related services concentrated in it. The locals needed only to win one of the two contests with the Whittier Gold Sox Sunday and they had to fight tooth and nail to achieve that victory. After being defeated 1-0 in the opening game, the Lionettes battled the Whittier Gold Sox for a record 29 innings before Nancy Ito and Shirley Smith finally got to sensational Sox hurler Louise Mazzuca for the decider. To call Mazzuca's performance phenomenal would be shortening her. She pitched the entire 36 innings for Whittier giving up just one run and 20 hits. She struck out 27. Maybe just as awe-inspiring, however, was the hurling by Lionette ace Joan Joyce in the second contest. Joyce struck out an unbelievable 39 while blanking the Sox on seven hits. Joan threw no-hit ball for 12 innings before giving up a lead-off single to Erlene Ulrich in the 13th. After Ulrich's safety, Colene Riley walked and Lela Burns was safe on a fielder's choice to load the bases. After a great play by Ito, who blocked the plate to stop May from scoring in the top half of the 29th, the Lionette catcher promptly singled to open the home half of the late, late inning. She was sacrificed to second by Lou Albrecht and was left there as Sharon Backus flew to left. Smith then came through with a line drive base-hit to right that scored Ito on a close play at the plate. The Gold Sox forced the double-elimination tournament finale into an extra game by beating the locals on a freak accident. May singled to open the second inning, went to second when Schreiber walked and adanced to third on Spanks' miscue.
