YMCA Activities
Indian Guides Head for Snow
The results of a contest held between the Y's Owls, Tri-Hi-Y girls group and the Varsity Y's, a hi-Y boys' group of the Anaheim YMCA have been released.
The Varsity Y's had challenged the Y's Owls to sell the most boxes of candy in conjunction with the Anaheim YMCA World Candy Sale.
Accepting the challenge, the girls club beat the boys club by a total of 120 boxes of candy.
Last year the Varsity Y's sold 600 boxes of candy and the girls club they challenged served the boys club a steak dinner.
The rules were the same this year except the situation is reversed and the boys served the girls on March 21 the steak dinner. After dinner the co-eds held an evening of athletic activity at the Anaheim Y including basketball and volleyball. Both clubs are 10th graders at Anaheim High School.
The Y's Owls organized in 7th grade at Fremont Junior High and now have a total of 18 members. This year for service they have twice visited with a 50 woman ward at the Rancho Los Amigos Convalescent Hospital in Downey presenting the patients with tray favors and spending the afternoon visiting and talking. This is the second year they have accepted this responsibility as a service project.
Recently the group held a pot luck dinner at the home of member, Colleen Grigg; grunion hunting at Laguna Beach and breakfast at the home of Nancy Winston afterwards.
Officers of the Y's Owls are: Sue Mente, president; Nancy Winston, vice president; Kay Arnold, secretary; Terri Carlin, treasurer; and Linda Nelson, publicity.
Also Susie Bird, world service; Colleen Grigg, council representative; Charlotte Williams, worship.
Other members are: Marsha Evans, Linda Goodell, and Leslie Owens. Leader is Mrs. Skip Dinkler.
Chief Chuck Erickson of Eagle Nation Anaheim YMCA Indian Guides led his big and little braves to Camp Osceola.
This snow campout was the first of many events planned by the Eagle Nation. This Nation consisting of 12 tribes with 102 members, enjoyed a fun filled weekend of snow fights, tobogganing and sledging.
Newly elected officers of the Eagle Nation besides Erickson, are Ed Williams, assistant chief; Sid Jordine, tallykeeper; Bill Townsend, wampum bearer; and Bob Norris, medicine man.
The Bear Nation, guided by its chief, L. J. Swift, have just completed a snow trip-campout combination, also held at Camp Osceola.
The Bear Nation enlisted the help of the Comanche Tribe for the entertainment of a true to life Indian Death Dance presented by the Comanche Tribes Little Braves.
Officers of the Bear Nation are: Don Golding, assistant chief; Dick McAlister, tallykeeper; Jack Brennan, wampum bearer; and Dick Nienaberl medicine man.
The Fox and Buffalo Nations held their snow campout at the Santa Monica YMCA Big Bear Y Camp.
YMCA camping is still kept rustic enough that the over 100 big and little braves attending set their own tables, cleaned up afterwards, and planned their own evening program of entertainment.
Officers of the Fox Nation are: Howard Christensen, chief; Ken French, assistant chief; Bill Brake, tallykeeper; Bob Harmon, wampum bearer; and Bob Hatch, medicine man.
In the Buffalo Nation are Chief Fred Hart; assistant chief, Dave Burns; tallykeeper, Jerry Knowles; and wampum bearer, Pete Remeika.
The Anaheim YMCA Indian Guides purpose is to foster companionship of father and son. Any boy six years or older is eligible to join with his dad. For further information please contact Frank Sekeris, boys' program director, at the Anaheim YMCA, KE 5-2165, a member agency of United Fund.
