Although the St. Jude laboratory training school has had State approval since 1957, approval by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists was received only last year. This is the first class to graduate under the new license. With ASCP registry, the graduates are permitted to practice in every state in the U.S. except three without further examination. New York, Florida and California, however, have their own state examinations, a hospital spokesman said. Prior to taking the ASCP exam students must have a bacccalaureate degree in one of the biological sciences from an accredited college or university plus 12 months of practical training in an approved laboratory. The practical training must include all departments not mally found in a clinical laboratory. This practical training is fulfilled in the laboratory at St. Jude. The practical training supplemented by 120 hours didactic lectures. Laboratory technology is on field in which there is no employment, said hospital personnel. The classes at St. Jude are under the general supervision of Dr. Thomas Jones, hospital pathologist and Miss Margaret Gilbertson, chief technologist. At present there are two students still working on their certificates and who will complete their work on July 1. At the same time four new students will start their practical training. Miss Gilbertson, in addition to her duties as chief technologist and instructor, is also treasurer of the California Association Medical Lab. Technologists. The graduates include Wanda Hudson, Lucile Smith, Mara Uriba, Carol Kroll, Lindy Schickley, Janice Shaar and Enid Hunnemeyer.
