8—The Anaheim Gazette Thursday, February 13, 1964 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Off to Sea With The Old Skipper By AFTON MAC NAUGHTON Editor's note: This series of unique stories for children are the product of the scribbling of an aged sea captain who adventured all over the world before he died a few years ago, leaving the material to a long-time shipmate and friend. THE HUNGRY ALLIGATORS Captain Obediah Hoofelstinkel sailed for many months in the Questionable Islands and had many adventures and saw many strange sights. And he became acquainted with the habits of many kinds of fish and birds. For example, there were gooney birds, which are similar to sea gulls. When they were on land and making their nests they bowed to each other very politely. Two of them would meet and keep bowing to each other for hundreds of times. "One wonders which one of them said thank you or how do you do first," mused the captain. Then there were the land birds that came out to the captain's little ship, the SCARED CAT, and landed on the top of the mast or on the deck and looked at him in a very friendly way. Captain Hoofelstinkel realized that these little birds, of several kinds, lived on an island where there were no people and knew nothing about people and therefore weren't afraid of them. It was the same way with some of the fish when Captain alligators and they came faster than he could beat them on the snout. And he was getting too tired to fight them off as they came bellowing out of the jungle —more and more of them—and he had no time to try to row away. But just then something wonderful happened. The tide turned, as mariners say. It started running toward the ocean again. And the little boat was carried away from the dangerous alligators — slowly, at first, then faster and faster and faster until it drifted back into the ocean near where the Scared Cat was anchored and Captain Hoofelstinkel rowed to his ship and went aboard. He had forgotten the water he intended to take from the river. But he didn't care. "I'll catch rain water," he decided. "And I'll sail straight home. And if I ever go into alligator country again I'll take my shotgun for protection." And that is how he happened to end his wonderful voyage in the Questionable Islands and sail back to his home. THE END Grower Unit Names New "By the time a man can ford to lose a golf ball he hit it that far." that came out to the captain's little ship, the SCARED CAT, and landed on the top of the mast or on the deck and looked at him in a very friendly way. Captain Hoofelstinkel realized that these little birds, of several kinds, lived on an island where there were no people and knew nothing about people and therefore weren't afraid of them. It was the same way with some of the fish when Captain Hoofelstinkel dived overboard to take a swim. The pretty colored fish didn't mind him at all and came real close to him. But he was careful to watch out for sharks, for sharks are likely to eat people. But something worse than sharks lived in one of the rivers that ran down to the sea from the middle of the largest Questionable Islands. Alligators! Nothing looks more horrid than an alligator with its mouth open. When he went ashore in his tiny rowboat, Captain Hoofelstinkel was careful not to go near the sand bars on the river where the alligators stayed. But then something fearful happened, any way. It was on the day when Captain Hoofelstinkel decided that he would get ready to sail back to his home in America. He got everything ready and then looked in the ship's tanks to see if there was enough water. There wasn't enough. So he took some large cans and put them in his tiny row boat and rowed into the river to get fresh water. He started to row up the river to where the sea wasn't mixed with the fresh water. And then came the ocean tide, running real fast. It was all right to let the tide take him up the river except that it was a strong tide and he was helpless. It did no good to row and try to keep the boat going slowly, so he was carried far up the river. The little boat was carried swiftly into the jungle country and Captain Hoofelstinkel reached up and held onto a tree to stay there until the tide would turn. But he was suddenly in great danger. Alligators — a dozen of them — came swimming toward him. He didn't have a gun or even a firecracker. All he had Grower Unit Names New Man to Board John S. Mr. Travis, who passed away recently, had been Vice President for the last seven years and a Director for 25 years. Other directors are Norman Reeves, President, Lawrence P. Kraemer, Vice President, Louis T. Kraemer and Bernardo M. Yorba. George C. Easton is Secretary and Manager and Marvin Ross is the field Superintendent. The election was held at the group's annual meeting last week. Manager Easton reported that prices for Valencia Oranges had been quite good during most of the 1963 season and this fact coupled with higher than average production had made the year quite profitable for the growers. He also announced regretfully the retirement of Josephine Fulfer, Assistant Secretary and Office Manager for the past twenty-two years.
