Top In L.A. —A champion in every event That's the theme of this year Los Angeles Indoor Games at the Sports Arena Saturday night. From the first event and right ANAHEIM GAZETTE SPO Thursday, February 6, 1954 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA CRYSTA By DOUGL Once again the Los Angeles Angels have made their annual appearance in Orange County for the usual "Angel Day" banquets and fol-de-rol and with them comes the question, what are the chances of them coming out here? The Rebels beat Magnolia 47-41 which puts them in a tie for second place in the Crestview league. Don Swimmers Lose Diving Ace Furry SANTA ANA — Santa Ana College swimming coach Rick Rowland feels like the sky fell upon him this week. Rowland lost hte services of ace diver Jack Furry for the season. Furry has been ruled ineligible for the second semester and Rowland said his loss leaves SAC without an experienced diver. "Without Furry we will lose our dual meet potential," moaned Rowland, in his first year as Don swimming coach. Rowland feels the 1964 edition of the Don swimming team will be hard pressed to equal last year's 9-2 Eastern Conference mark. SAC's loss of Furry increased an already existing problem. "Depth is our biggest problem," Rowland admitted. Furry last year was the state three meter diving champion and was ranked number one in the nation. To plug the hole left by the absence of Furry, Rowland has taken a Don from the tennis courts and will try to convert a gymnastic titlist to a diver. John Matthews and Sid Frudenstein are the two Dons Rowland is converting. Rowland said Matthews who has the build (4-10 tall) to become a diver must develop a list or required dives. Frudenstein was the CIF gymnastic champion when he attended Anaheim High Rowland has another problem with which to contend — the Dons are facing the roughest swimming schedule in the college's history according to the new mentor. Santa Ana plunges into this season's slate Feb. 7 against USC Frosh. Rowland is counting on the freshmen corps of swimmers to develop and aid lettermen Meryl Raco, Pat Monahan and Bob Welty. Racco, born in Hawaii, and Welty were All-American selections last year. The Don duet was on the All-American four-man 400 yard medley relay. Once again the Los Angeles Angels have made their annual appearance in Orange County for the usual "Angel Day" banquets and fol-de-rol and with them comes the question, what are the chances of them coming out here? For the answer to this question we attended a Press Conference with Gene Autry, owner of the Angels and here is what he says about the situation. "Not for at least two years," the ex-cowboy star said, they still have two years to go in their contract with the Dodgers for Chavez Ravine, the Cadillac of stadiums. Admittently he says, there are "some problems with O'Malley" (Walter O'Malley, head of the Dodgers) "But these are not unusual. As long as we lease with another club certain problems are bound to come up. Among the problems Autry's Angels have is attendance, or in some cases, a lack of. As long as the Angeles share the park they will be a step-child to the firmly entrenched Dodgers. When questioned to the possibility of moving to the coliseum or building another stadium in the Exposition Park area with the Sports Arena and Coliseum, Autry replied that the mammoth football palace wouldn't be suitable in its present form. To build a stadium in the nearby vicinity would be almost impossible too, because of the land involved, not mentioning the cost. Commenting on the cost of building a stadium Autry claimed that with the present tax structure the "only way to build a ball park is by either having a city or civic organization that is tax free build it and then lease it to the Angels. "The six o fthe ball park should be 40 - 45,000 capacity which woud require at east 10 acres for the stadium and at least another 150-acres for parking with the possibility of part..." AHEIM GAZETTE Sports NEWS Day, February 6, 1954 THE Anaheim Gazette—7 HEIM, CALIFORNIA CRYSTAL BALL By DOUGLAS HUFF again the Los Angeles have made their annual once in Orange County usual "Angel Day" banand fol-de-rol and with omes the question, what changes of them coming? The answer to this question attended a Press Conof this being free space, because," as Autry said, "By the time one obtains tickets for the whole family and then pays for parking its more than the average families pocket book can take." Other locations for the club have been discussed also. Long Beach would like to have One of the biggest names in history of the spiked sport will perform right at the start — Bobby Hayes of Florida A&M. The muscular Hayes, acknowledged as the fastest of the "world's fastest humans" off his 9.1 race in the National AAU meet last season, will be seen first in the 60-yard dash heats and, unless a catastrophe occurs, again in the finals. He is co-holder of the world 60-yard record of 6.0 and will be gunning for at least 5.9. Just Opener Yet, Hayes will merely be the opening act in a series of spectacular events bound to thrill the crammed arena. Among the galaxy of stars scheduled to glitter are Hayes, Jones, 60-yard hurdles: Adolph Plummer and Ulis Williams, 500; George Kerr, 600; Tom O'Neil and Jim Grelle, mile; Clarke, two mile; Arizona S. mile relay; Dallas Long Gary Gubner, shot put; Boston, broad jump; four 10-pole vaulters and five high jumpers. That's quite a cast and battle should be fierce for late-of-the-meet honors. Of all the champions, J has the longest win streak. He has run 46 straight races without defeat. T quite a feat, considering precarious nature of therier events. Fastest Ever Jones had the fastest outburst mark in the world year, 13.4. His chief rival in L.A. Indoor meet, Blaine Green, did 13.5 in '63. Probably the two most San Diego Gets Unplanned Reef Artificial fishing reefs are expensive, and ordinarily they are carefully planned and budgeted. Other locations for the club have been discussed also. Long Beach would like to have the Angels as would San Fernando Valley in northwest Los Angeles. But no matter where they finally do end up and it seems likely they'll go somewhere other than the Ravine, the name, "Los Angels, Angels," won't be changed he hinted. "Why, because the francise went to LA in the first place," he reminded the scribes. "It is possible though, to change the name to just "the Angels" but to call them the Long Beach, Santa Ana, or Anaheim Angels, would make people in the east ask, 'where's that?'" "The name Los Angeles has appeal he said, people everywhere know that is. The metropolitan papers would have a great influence over any decisions too. But getting down to specifies on Orange County as a location for the Angels, Autry said the chances were good for the following reasons. 1. Its central location. Due to the vast freeway web that will in the near future dissect the county, fans from San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego and Los Angeles county have easy access. 2. Orange County is beginning to come into its own. We now Artificial fishing reefs are expensive, and ordinarily they are carefully planned and budgeted. San Diego County, however, last week fell heir to an entirely free, completely unplanned but nonetheless welcome fishing reef consisting of 1,800 tons have slightly over a million residents and these people alone could probably support the Angels. 3. Acreage is still available for a ball park, possibly in the Disneyland area. Anaheim would have Disneyland, a new convention center, a ball park, and Melodyland Theatre, with the beaches and the mountains close by along with the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine 35 miles up the Santa Ana Freeway. Speaking of Freeways, we'll have those too. Right now we have the Santa Ana Freeway directing Anaheim, the Riverside Freeway on our northern perimeter, and under construction or proposed for, the Garden Grove Freeway on the south, Orange Freeway on the east leading to Pomona, the Highway 39 Freeway from the mountains to the sea, and still further over, the San Diego Freeway to the south and west. Who cares if they remain the Los Angeles Angels as long as we had them out here in Anaheim. We meet all Autry's qualifications except one, no stadium. What's quite a cast and the title should be fierce for athletics of the meet honors. Of all the champions, Jones is the longest win streak governed. He has run 46 straight hurdles without defeat. That's made a feat, considering the carious nature of the bar events. Fastest Ever Jones had the fastest outdoor track mark in the world last year. 13.4. His chief rival in the Indoor meet, Blaine Lindman, did 13.5 in '63. Probably the two most draughty duels building up on the track are the 500 and mile events. Plummer and Williams are the two fastest 440 runners in history, both having bettered the world record last season. Plummer recorded an amazing 44.9 to lower the mark by .8 of a second and Williams, the ex-Compton star, did 45.6 in the same race. Since then Williams has beaten Plummer several times. The pressure will be increased this meet, since they will be running 'over-distance', 500 yards, a tough task at this time of the year. The mile struggle will be equally grim. The veteran Grelle has run 3:56.1, fourth fastest in the world last year, while O'Hara's 3:56.9 is the best ever recorded by a collegian. He attends U. of Loyola College at Chicago. While Clarke, the powerful striding Australian, is more noted for the world 6-mile and 10-000 world records he recently set, the Aussie is well capable of dropping down to an eye-popping two-mile mark. He's run 4:03.4 for the mile and 8:35.2 for the two-mile. Shot Put Long and Gubner, of course, are fairly aching to match throws in the shot put. Long, the world outdoor record holder at 65 ft. 10½ in., passed up most of last season. Yet in two meets he had the best in the world, 63 ft. 9 in. Gubner holds the indoor mark of 64 ft. 11¼ in. The planks will be thumping when they start slinging the 16-pound ball. ANAHEIM TRUCK & TRANSFER CO. General Trucking Moving - Storage PHONE KE 5-2863 ANAHEIM THE WILLIAMS Co.
