The ANAHEIM GAZETTE Women's NEWS Thursday, February 6, 1864 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Gazette Gardening Under the Green Thumb It is very fortunate indeed that Baron Walter von Saint Paul, a vanilla and India-rubber plantation owner in Usambara, North East Tanganyika, Territory of East Africa, cared for more than vanilla and rubber. Before the turn of the century the good Baron discovered a delightful little plant growing in wooded places in the fissures of limestone rocks where quantities of decaying vegetable matter — what we call humus — had lodged. His father in Germany, to whom the Baron sent plants, also reported that these little "Usambara violets" were found by his son growing in the primeval forest of Numbara, in the shade, on granite rocks. These little plants, of course, are the ancestors of one of our most popular and rewarding house plants, variously known as the African Violet or Saintpaulia in honor of the Baron. A good deal of time, a number of other discoveries and a tremendous amount of professions, the African Violet, you can visit almost any member shop of the California Association of Nurserymen for enlightenment. The ones you grow are identical with those you see in florists' windows. Since 1893, when it first flowered in Europe, the blue "violets" have become white, blue, deep purple, various shades of pink and the form of the violet-like flowers has become ruffled and double as well as simple, star-shaped. The leaves are very tropical-looking, rather thick and hairy, usually reddish on the underside and light to deep green on the upper side. The whole plant gives the most tropical effect and when properly grown you have flowers virtually all year — although now and then a plant will take a well-earned rest for a few days or weeks, but not longer if grown well. GARDENER'S CHECKLIST 1. Plant seed periodically and you'll have good eating nearly all year in most of the state. These little plants, of course, are the ancestors of one of our most popular and rewarding house plants, variously known as the African Violet or Saintpaulia in honor of the Baron. A good deal of time, a number of other discoveries and a tremendous amount of professional and amateur breeding have produced a whole range of African Violets today that — luckily for us — are easier to grow than the original somewhat temperamental ones. Our modern ones also flower almost constantly. You do not have to be an expert to grow African Violets, nor do you have to make a hobby of growing them to enjoy this useful little (some do get pretty large after a few years) houseplant that likes conditions not very different from those we humans favor. If you are not familiar with the whole plant gives the most tropical effect and when properly grown you have flowers virtually all year — although now and then a plant will take a well-earned rest for a few days or weeks, but not longer if grown well. GARDENER'S CHECKLIST 1. If you haven't pruned your roses yet and they just don't seem to want to sleep, you'll have to persuade them for their own good. Prune them now. Remove all leaves and clean up thoroughly the week following. 2. Any time from now on you can prune your fuchsias. Cut to shape but cut them back as far as you can because the more new growth you get next year the more flowers. 3. When your lawn has a chance to dry out enough to walk on, rake in LIGHTLY a dressing of well-aged manure and a good complete plant food. Then go easy on the plant food so you don't burn the grass — water it in thoroughly. The volunteer group consists of students from Western, Loara and Magnolia High Schools and Junior Girl Scouts. It is an ex-curricular activity and participation is wholly on the students' own volition. Interest in medicine, pharmacy and nursing is the only requisite for attending the business meetings, films, field trips and lectures held bi-monthly. The Orange County Medical Association, physicians and Martin Luther Hospital Administrator A.E. Coltrin provide this means for young persons to determine if there is a sustained interest in the medical field, as well as giving a segment of vocational guidance. The group is unique in having non-medical students as Explorer Boy Scouts. In the near future small groups of Boy Scouts will be performing mock operations to familiarize themselves with operating rooms and procedures. Students may contact the hospital for more information.
