AWARD WINNER — Anaheim Gazette carrier boy Mike oruns, 218 Shakespeare receives a trophy for service to his newspaper and his customers from Gazette Circulation Manager Ed Clisby. Mike, a 12-year-old Sycamore Ju- nior High School student, has been carrying the Gazette for five months. He says he is using some of his earnings for spending money and saving the rest. On two occasions since then, Gruenfelder recalled, the county counsel has ruled certain educational materials furnished by private firms was not suitable for school distribution. Meanwhile, Anaheim City School District officials have decided to use the dental health posters offered in connection with the Crest package, but are not sending home the toothpaste or using any of the other material in which the county counsel now has under study. "It's just too commercial," was the reaction of an Anaheim City School official. A similar sentiment was voiced in Orange Unified School District headquarters. An earlier case brought to the attention of the county counsel promised more concern for district officials this week. County Schools claims chief Otis Embree has held up payment on a $232 district voucher in payment for printing Supt. George Wilson's Christmas message to the students. The county counsel has ruled this message to have been an illegal intrusion of the schools into religious MORE ABOUT Rinker (Continued from Page 1) or a letter to the Anaheim City Council, Sorsabel said. "We feel this is the best way for the two cities to cooperate," he declared. Sneak Annexation? When asked if a sneak annexation could be effected, Sorsabel said: "Our council is quite concerned that the agreement stay in effect." "We probably would look favorably on the annexation if the Orange City Council approved it," he said. The Santa Ana River forms the boundary between cities and would present addition problems in furnishing municipal services to the Rinker tract from Anaheim. If Anaheim were to annex the property, it would be zoned the same as it is in the county, according to Sorsabel. Anaheim does not pre-zone annexation, he said. Under county zoning, the Rinker land is designated for agricultural and single residential use. MORE ABOUT Site (Continued from Page 1) sultant. Then they will all go over ideas on how large the facilities should be. Murdoch has said however, that on the basis of an extensive series of tours he and the councilmen have made of other Western convention centers, the actual exhibit space will be "well in excess of 95,000 square feet perhaps twice that much," and the sports arena may seat as many as 9-10,000. In conversation with the architects seeking the convention center assignment, the council has used a cost range of $3-10 million for the entire project. Murdoch expalined, but actual guesses as to the actual cost have been in the $5-7 million bracket. At present, plans for financing the structure call for the greatest share of the burden to be met from the city's hotel-motel tax, passed last year with the understanding it would be put to this use. In the first place, there is little, if any, uniformity in the requirements of colleges and universities in the area for foreign language study. The junior colleges have no language requirement, except in certain courses which prepare the student for advanced entry into the state university. Only in the biological and physical sciences and mathematics does the state college system require foreign language study for a degree. In those fields, satisfactory completion of four years of language study prior to entrance generally are sufficient. Of the private institutions in this area Chapman College is satisfied with two years of high school language with at least a "B" grade average, and Southern California College requires Latin and Greek, which must be taken on campus. New Latin GOP Group A five state organization — designed to deal with political principles—has been launched in Orange County. The organization is ROLE — Republicans of Latin Extraction. As directors the organization lists Frank Moreno, publisher of a Spanish language newspaper, Santa Ana grocer Cruz Barrios, Eddie Estudillo, Porfie Peralta and Mrs. Stella Sandoval. Moreno, president and founder of ROLE, said the name of the new organization signifies that Americans of Latin extraction have a role of responsibility to fulfill. "More and more of these people are not content to play follow the leader any more," Moreno said, "they want to know where the leader is going; they are studying the issues." E.J. Kakis Appointed At Chapman The appointment of Frederick J. Kakis as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Chapman College has been an nounced by Dr. John L. Davis president of the college. Currently a teaching assistant at Stanford University, where he is completing work for the Ph.D. in chemistry, Kakis will join the Chapman faculty at the beginning of the spring semester in February. Kakis received his bachelor o science degree at the City College of New York, where he participated in a one-year research project on air pollution under a grant from the National Institutes of Health. He received the Levy Award of the college's chemistry department and also the New York Foundation Graduate Award. The county superintendent should not have to get involved in the minutiae of school district affairs. He is a coordinator, a provider of staff services But as long as a district board is apparently unwilling to exercise simple prudence to make sure its activities are within the limits of its authority, the county superintendent will have to continue in this uncomfortable position.
