Savanna In New Prep Loop,
Football Schedule Announced
One of the CIF's best balanced wheels in recent wheels in recent years, the reorganized Freeway League, has released its new eight school football schedule this week.
The schedule begins the weekend of Oct. 9 and closes the 20th of November, making it a seven game schedule.
Formerly a six team prep league, Newport Harbor, Fullerton, Costa Mesa and Savanna all move into the league beginning next September. Leaving the Freeway League to join the Sunset League are Santa Ana and Huntington Beach. Other Freeway teams include Garden Grove, Bolsa Grande, Orange, and league co-champs, Buena Park.
The league schedule follows with all dates subject to adjustment:
Oct. 9:
Orange at Garden Grove;
Costa Mesa at Bolsa Grande;
SAVANNA at FULLERTON;
Newport at Buena Park.
Oct. 16:
Fullerton at Newport;

COLONISTS HONORED — Anaheim High Stars Richard Carrillo, left, and Dick Hough have been named to the 1963 edition of the All-Southern Calif. Section CIF "AAAA" football team by the Helms Board of Football. Carrillo was tabbed for second team honors at a guard slot for his consistent work this season. Richard a 188 lb. senior, has been named OC's top lineman, to the all-Sunset League and OC first team posts. Hough was honored with a third string back spot despite an injury that kept him out for two games. He was a quarterback and safety man, named all-league and all county too. Dick is a 165 lb. senior.
BOWLING SPOTLIGHT

Southern California bowlers will be among the 288 men an 144 women competing in the 23rd annual Bowling Proprietors Association of America's National All-Star Bowling Tournament at Dallas' State Fair Coliseum from Jan. 15-26. Most of the contestants are survivors of local, district or state qualifying events held in October.
Southern Californians are (number following bowler's name indicates the number of All-Star appearances including the 1964 event):

HALL OF FAME
Ballots are in the mail for voting on candidates for the American Bowling Congress' Hall of Fame, which now includes 27 bowlers. Nine of bowling's greatest bowlers are now being considered for election into the Hall. The only bowler with any affiliation locally who has been named for the Qualifying Section (from where candidates are elevated to the Election Section as vacancies occur) is Harold (Tiger) Asplund.
Asplund is an instructor for beginner bowlers at Linbrook Bowl in Anaheim. He formerly bowled for the famous Detoit Stroh's team.

The Blades' arch-rival Seals have met eight times this season and Los Angeles holds a 6-2 edge in victories.
In their last meeting, however, the Seals bolstered by the addition of Defenseman Gerry Odrowski, slaughtered the Blades, 7-1. Odrowski was obtained from Quebec of the American League for Center Cliff Pennington.
Blades Fight for Second, Challenge Seals Tonight
Hoping to make the most of one of their more lengthy home stands, the Los Angeles Blades will be looking for a victory this week when they host the San Francisco Seals, Thursday, Jan. 9.
Face-off time is set for 8 p.m. Coach Alf Pike's Blades are engaged in a nip and tuck battle with the Seattle Totems for second place in the Western Hockley League.

International Boat Show Quits
Sunday in Long Beach Arena
The only show in the world devoted exclusively to sailing and sail-boating ends in Long Beach this weeknd as the International Sailboat and Yacht Show ends its 10 day run.
More than double the size of last year's exhibition, and featuring more big boats than any other show in the nation, the 2nd annual event has on display hundreds of boats, representing virtually every major manufacturer and including even foreign built boats, will be fully-rigged.
In addition to the exhibits of boats, there are lectures, movies and discussions covering all phases of sailing, racing, rigging and maintenance.
Many of the boats on exhibit are being shown to the public for the first time. They range from tiny sabots to day-sailers and luxury yachts.
SPECIAL SKI FILM TONIGHT
A Special presentation of the "Sound of Skiing," featuring a ski chase and the Commanding General of the Command pitted against a runaway snow making machine will be shown at the Santa Ana High School Auditorium tonight at 8 p.m.
Warren Miller, producer of the 90 minute color, and sound classic, will be on hand to narrate his latest film which also features ski flying behind the Iron Curtain.
Admission at the door is $1.50. Presenting the film is a local Orange County Ski Club.
Girls Top Mark
ANAHEIM — Women bowlers came up with 200-plus scores in the Orange County Traveling Trio League Monday at Limbrook Bowl. They were: Bobbie Sorensen, 234, Olga Huerta, 225, Fran Fidler, 213, Marge Heryet, 210-100, Peggy Lehman, 207, Evie Banning, 207, Gerry Remy, 205, Duchess Mayan, 205, Nancy Kinney, 203, Clare Fenton, 202, and Dottie Morrison, 201. Fran Fidler had high scratch for four games, 7366, while Nancy Kinney had 752.
Stolen Base Leader
Maury Wills tied a stolen base record, without great fanfare, during the '63 season. He led his league with 40 and that was the fourth straight season he was the N.L.'s top rabbit.
Three other players led four straight years: Cincinnati's Bob Bescher (1909-12), Pittsburgh's Max Carey (1915-18 and again in 1922-25) and the Giants' Willie Mays (1956-'59).
