ANAHEIM GAZETTE Sports NEWS Thursday, January 9, 1964 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA The Anaheim Gazette—7 CRYSTAL BALL BY DOUGLAS HUFF Sports Editor (Part Two) "In order to coach one has to want to, he must always have the desire." With these words Magnolia cage coach Jerry Gray sums up his philosophy of coaching a successful team. Gray has been the head varsity basketball coach at Magnolia for the last three years and prior to that he spent five years coaching the Anaheim High roundballers. Gray was born in Texas and received his early schooling in the lone star state before moving to Santa Barbara, Calif., and graduating from Santa Barbara High School in 1958. that the important thing is how you play the game. Summing up his chances for the Crestview crown he said that it depends on the boys. "If they want too, they can win it." He added that the only major stumbling block, if they correct their other problems would be La Habra. They have all five of their last years starting lineup playing. Boosting his starting lineup are his only two lettermen from last year, Tom Scott and Roger See. However, he has two lettermen from other schools, Mike Thornton from Illinois, and Tom Neese from Burlingame, Calif. Gray has been the head varsity basketball coach at Magnolia for the last three years and prior to that he spent five years coaching the Anaheim High roundballers. Gray was born in Texas and received his early schooling in the lone star state before moving to Santa Barbara, Calif., and graduating from Santa Barbara High School in 1956. Following his high school graduation he attended San Bernardino Valley College and upon graduation from there arrived in Anaheim. He is married has two children, Matt, 7, and Cheryl, 6, and resides at 1755 Chateau in Anaheim with his wife, Cece. He has hopes Matt will become a basketball star. According to local observers, Gray is coaching the best team Magnolia has had in its brief 3 year existence, but Gray reports he is having a few problems, mainly poor shooting and ball control. He says that once they solve this "we should be able to do a pretty fair job." Prior to Tuesday's opening Crestview encounter with Sunny Hills, the Sentinels were saddled with a 5-3 pre-league record. Commenting on the county-wide basketball ratings which this week listed crosstown rivals Savanna as the number ten team, Gray said that he "never worries about ratings." He feels Octopus Hunters Using Bluestone Pay $150 Fine LAGUNA BEACH — Copper sulphate, otherwise known as bluestone, has its legitimate uses but taking fish or game is not one of them. Three optopus hunters made that discovery this month when they paid a total of $150 in fines for violating Fish and Game Code section 5650, which makes it unlawful to introduce into State waters any material decontamination. Loara in for Bad Season "It's not a very bright future for the Loara cagemen as seen through the eyes of Saxon mentor Lute Olson as he eyes Loara's record in Orange League Competition. Orange League is mid-way through its first round of basketball owing to the fact that the League officials (school administrators) decided that it would be better if the coaches and kids stayed home and did nothing, not even a practice session during the Christmas Holidays despite many of the coaches bitter objections. Olson blasted this as not only wrong, but that it forbid the teams a chance to work together as a team before the play was for keeps. He held that pre-season games and tourneys were for the purpose of giving the teams experience and practice. As a result, most of the other county leagues will finish a month later than the Orange League, thus the Orange League schools will have a month of rest before CIF begins and be out of practice. The Cal Club region LAGUNA BEACH — Copper sulphate, otherwise known as bluestone, has its legitimate uses but taking fish or game is not one of them. Three optopus hunters made that discovery this month when they paid a total of $150 in fines for violating Fish and Game Code section 5650, which makes it unlawful to introduce into State waters any material deleterious to fish, plant life or bird life. The three were arrested by Fish and Game Warden William Sheflin at Laguna Beach, where he found them putting bluestone, which is toxic, into tidal pools at low tide. Frantic to escape the poisonous substance, the octopi scuttled out from their hiding places and were snagged by the three offenders with homemade gaffs. Other fish and plant life in the pools were killed by the copper sulphate. Evidence seized by Warden Sheflin included 17 octopi, six pounds of bluestone and the three gaffs. He held that pre-season games and tourneys were for the purpose of giving the teams experience and practice. As a result, most of the other county leagues will finish a month later than the Orange League, thus the Orange League schools will have a month of rest before CIF begins and be out of practice. The CIF rules allow every school only 22 games a season, with each tourney counting as two games regardless of how many times the team plays in each tourney. Olson does not expect to place very much higher than where he is now in League standings — in the middle. This do to the fact that he has 12 men right now, all of them Juniors as Loara has only the 10th and 11th grades. Of these 12, two are transfers. He does expect to get a couple of Sophomores after the first of the year, though. Credit to QB’s for His Coach Coach Dick Coury of Dei, newly appointed South for the 1964 state all-star has an interesting line that separates coaches from great ones. “Quarterbacks,” claims without hesitation, there’s one position that a difference, it’s quarterback. Coury, in seven years head coach at Mater Dei posted a 75-8-4 record record parallels that of Tucker during Tucker’s years at Brea-Olinda. Coury can draw a parallel between the ability of quarterbacks the Mater Dei record also credits the Mater tradition and backing the school for his success as head coach. But he can't help be about his quarterbacks. Don’t like to get caught out a quarterback," he replains. Sounds sort of like kid in the comic strip with blanket. Coury explains that year he likes to have a more, junior and senior qu back. “One time I got with two in the same grade class and the underclass didn’t pan out.” he recalls. TO INSBRUCK — Bill Disney, a member of the Glacier Falls Speed Skating Club in Antrim, is among the five Southern California skaters that left this week for the 1964 Winter Olympics at Inbruck, Austria beginning on December 29. This is Disney's second Olympics, in 1960 he brought home a silver medal earned in the 500 meter skating event. Skating has been his life since he was 13, and he has won several national honors. He will be gone about four months, leaving his wife and two boys, ages 4 and 2, behind. Perhaps, as good housekeepers, they don't want to damage the turf! Another thing is their sweet natures, — or can this description be used to explain why too many of them come in off the course, after a bad round, and laugh about it? A bad round should drive a gal to the practice tee for a serious analysis of the trouble. And ladies, use the woods more. A long iron has to be swung much faster and more expertly to get the ball up. A 5-wood is so much easier to hit, so use it. The meeting will commence at 2 p.m. in the Winema Hotel and will be open to the public. Following the afternoon session the commissions will reconvene at 8 p.m. at which time the public will have an opportunity to testify on fish and game matters of mutual interest to both states. Among subjects to be discussed will be the interstate deer herd and the Klamath River fishery. A general review of procedures for commission co-operaon on interstate problems is also planned. Heading the California delegation will be Jamie H. Smith of Los Angeles, President of the California Fish and Game Commission. Good Fish Spots Given in Atlas A well-done synoptic presentation of the most important marine fishing areas in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii has been prepared by biologist James L. Squire, Tiburon Marine Laboratory, Calif. In addition to locating areas for the different kinds of surf fishing areas, kelp beds, artificial reefs, fishing piers and barges, ramps, and charter boat and skiff rentals are also pinpointed. The atlas (U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife Circular 174) presents a very helpful general view of West Coast game fishing. Yungbluth, President-Chairman of the Board His Coaching Success Coach Dick Coury of Mater Dei, newly appointed South coach for the 1964 state all-star game, has an interesting theory on the line that separates average coaches from great ones. "Quarterbacks," Coury claims without hesitation. "If there's one position that makes a difference, it's quarterback." Coury hopes to have some faces going for him at quarterback when he and Jim Pendleton of Los Angeles High take the reigns for the annual summer classic in the Coliseum late next July. Coury and Pendleton were just named to the post today by a committee of sports writers, school administrators and coaches. Coury, in seven years as head coach at Mater Dei, has posted a 75-8-4 record. His record parallels that of Dick Tucker during Tucker's later years at Brea-Olinda. Coury can draw a parallel between the availability of quarterbacks and the Mater Dei record. He also credits the Mater Dei tradition and backing of the school for his success as head coach. But he can't help but talk about his quarterbacks. "I just don't like to get caught without a quarterback," he explains. Sounds sort of like the id in the comic strip with the blanket. Coury explains that each ear he likes to have a sophomore, junior and senior quarterback. "One time I got caught with two in the same graduating class and the underclassmen didn't pan out," he recalls. John Huarte and Mike Adams had graduated the year before after guiding the Monarchs to an 11-1 record and the CIF championship. "You can build around a good quarterback and you can win with a great one," Coury claims, with ample evidence (gathered for the last seven years) to prove his statement. Coury feels it takes a real good one to make the Mater Dei attack click. "We need a quarterback who can run and pass," he explains. Here is the list of quarterbacks and their role in Coury's phenomenal success at Mater Dei: 1957 — John Kelly, a junior, quarterbacked this team that got Coury off to a flying start as head coach. The Monarchs roared to an 11-0-1 record and the CIF crown. 1958 — Kelly was in his last year and a guy named John Huarte moved in as a sophomore. Mater Dei had an 8-2-1 record and reached the CIF semi-finals. 1959 — Huarte and Mike Adams shared the quarterbacking duties, with Huarte sparking the attack. Mater Dei finished with an 11-1 record, finishing second in the CIF. 1960 — Huarte and Adams were both seniors, but Coury felt they were too good to play elsewhere so they ranked one-two at quarterback. They clicked for an 11-1 record and the CIF crown. 1961 — Huarte, All-CIFer, was at Notre Dame and Mater Dei, the CIF champ, was in trouble — as trouble goes at Mater Dei. Bob Adams, Mike's more, stepped in line. 1963 — Page, now a senator led the way as Mater stormed to an unbeaten sea and was advanced into large schools CIF playoffs the first time in its histe. The Monarchs tumbled in first round and finished 9-1. 1964 — Malek will be a senator and a guy named Pete Sand will probably be moved fn fullback to back him up. Shez will be a junior. Co feels Malek needs only to prove his running to carry Mater Dei quarterbacking ditions. But Coury is being very most in analyzing coaching success this simply. No coach w a 75-8-4 record and six chai pionships in seven years o brush off success so simply. When these athletes come Mater Dei they're fresh out the eighth grade. They played a bit of touch footb on the asphalt at various puchial schools around f county. And no school can come with enough quarterback through luck alone to produce such a record. There has to be some coa ing involved somewhere tha makes these quarterbacks ceptional instead of averag It's that coaching skill that hu made Dick Coury great instea of good. And because Dick Coury a great coach, he will be coa ing the best players in soullern California next summer the Coliseum.
