By DOUGLAS HUFF
Belated congratulations are in order for Jack Duffner, two-time winner of the our Sports Department photo contest.
The contest is still going on and we'll pay $5 for the best action shot of any sports if it is published in our next edition. Response to the offer has been slow so far, with only Duffner and Rick McQuiston entering.
All entries should be turned in to the Gazette by noon every Tuesday, located at 421 E. Cerritos Ave., behind CMA.
Jack is a senior at Magnolia High School and has spent many extra hours at other events for us too. He is also one of Magnolia's official student photographers.
Revision of our Sunset League predictions is next on our agenda in view of Western High's being rated the top basketball power in Orange County.
For many cage observers this came as quite a surprise in view of earlier predictions and talks with those closest to the scene — the coaches themselves.
Our revised Sunset League finals show that in the end WESTERN will come in first and thus head for CIF playoffs; Fullerton in second followed by Westminster and last and least, Costa Mesa.
Santa Anita opens today for a $5 day racing season — that is,
if they have reached accord with the building trades union.
For those of you who like to play the "ponies", don't forget the earlier starting time, 12:30 p.m. This was made necessary by adding a ninth race daily, and having to complete the day's slate by sundown.
More Congratulations seem to be in store at the moment. Congratulations to Dick Coury of Mater Dei. He's been named the most successful high school grid coach in Orange County and will be co-coach on the statewide level this summer when he coaches the South in the annual North - South Shrine Prep Classic in the LA Coliseum.
To Dick Tucker, grid mentor for the Orange Coast Pirates, Eastern Conference champs and now the best JC team in the nation.
To Billy White of the Pirates for his fine passing.
Don Lent, and the Magnolia's football team for their best season.
Erv Kimball for the fine effort his Rebels from Savanna put fourth this season.
To Steve Joyner of Fulerton Junior College and Ron Paterno of OCC, named to the J.C. Grid-Wire, 1963 All-American Team.
A very Merry Christmas to all our readers and an even happier New Year. . .
