'21st Century' Disneyland Show Strictly for People, by the Birds An entirely new medium of three-dimensional entertainment has been introduced in Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland... right out of yesterday's science fiction. Called "audio - Animatronics", this unique system was developed by Walt Disney's WED Enterprises Inc. It uses advanced space-age technological developments to produce a combination of sound effects, including human voices, and musical sounds with fully synchronized movements in any object — trees, birds, flowers, animals Convention Unit Picks H.W. Smith Harold W. Smith, co-owner, Smith-Reafsnyder Furniture Co., has been elected president of the Anaheim Area Visitor and Convention Bureau by the board of directors. John Mitchell, Plant Manager of Dixie Cup Corporation, Anaheim, was elected Vice President and Gil Gilbertson, Owner of One-O-One Motel, Orange, was elected treasurer. Danny Dare, Co-Executive Producer at Melodyland, Anaheim, Donald Boyles, President of Airport Coach Service, Anaheim, and Dean Davisson, Director of Public Relations, Knott's Berry Farm, became new members of the Board as a result of the recent election for and even human figures. Walt Disney animators and art directors have compared the achievement to the introduction of sound in motion pictures and color for television in its significance to the world of entertainment. Although the first full-scale application of "Audio - Animatronics" is in the Enchanted Tiki Room, it is also the basis for other developments in the future including attractions developed by Walt Disney's WED Enterprises for Ford Motor Company and General Electric which will open next year at the New York World's Fair. Long Search More than 10 years of research have gone into perfecting "Audio - Animatronics' techniques. (Early experiments were with small mechanical men. Later hydraulic and pneumatic muscles were developed for automated control of full-size human figures. Finally, Disney technicians developed through electronics, means for synchronizing sound and motion in bird, animal and flower figures for a complete show. More than $1 million has been spent in research and development of the Audio-Animatronics system since the program was initiated in 1952. As now perfected, the system provides a full range of motion for each figure controlled automatically by pre-programmed signals. This is accomplished by using the same kind of tape recorders, amplifiers and pneumatic controls employed in space industry. Scenery, costumes, props, and young actors fill the Fremont Junior High School Auditorium each afternoon and all day Saturday to be ready for some 1,500 season ticket holders next weekend. Director Thor Nielsen explained he has almost two full casts for the show. They will alternate in the morning and afternoon performances and will have a special dress rehearsal on Friday. ACT V supervisor, Diana R. Dunn, said the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department is sponsoring the program to allow Anaheim youth both to take part in and watch theatre just for them. ACT V also will bring four other productions to Anaheim. These will be seen on a season ticket series and will include the Mitchell Marionette and Illusion Show, "Wonderful Tang," by California High School in Whittier, "Snow Queen Ballet," by Naomi Nichols Dance Studio, and "The Wizard of Oz" by the San Diego Children's Youth Theatre. 'Beauty' Run Is Extended One Week "Beauty and the Beast" will extend its run thru the weekend of Friday the 13th of December.
