High School Band Booster Club Organizes, Elects First Officers George Proper was elected president of the new Loara High School Band Booster Club at its High School Band Booster Club Organizes, Elects First Officers George Proper was elected president of the new Loara High School Band Booster Club at its first organizational meeting last week on Loara campus. William Lippold, president pro-tem, conducted the meeting during which by-laws were approved and the following officers of the new organization were elected: Proper, William Lippold, vice president; Mrs. Glenn Middlebrooke, secretary; Mrs. Betty Crouse, treasurer; Mrs. Owen Fannon, membership chairman; Mrs. Robert Mattas and Mrs. Myron Carr, ways and means; Mrs. Lee Hodge, telephone; Mrs. J. Magdaleno, hospitality; Mrs. Jean Chappell, publicity. This club has been formed to promote and help support the band in its many activities, both on campus and off. First projects planned by the group will aid in paying for the new band uniforms and more musical instruments. The band, 116 strong, is directed by Mr. Richard Marino, noted musician in the Southern California area. Last year, with only sophomores in the school, the band took superior rating at the district festival; first place in competition against all senior high schools at the Covina parade; second place in its division in the Santa Ana parade; second place in the Huntington Beach parade; and numerous members won excellent and superior ratings in the solo and ensemble festival in Los Angeles and Costa Mesa. This year, with only sophomores and juniors in the school in their new ultra-modern black uniforms with white trim and 14-inch white fur shakos, the band has been hailed as the "one to beat" in competition by already established Orange County schools. This Saxon Band has received an invitation to attend the Corona Band Jamboree on Dec. 7. Only the ten top bands in Southern California are invited to attend this important event. Band Booster Club meetings are scheduled once a month, however, a special meeting has been called for Nov. 25 at 7:30 on the Loara campus. All parents of band members are invited to attend and take part in this very worthy organization. Check Those Furnaces Do you have a forced air furnace in your home? If you do, now is a good time to be sure it is in good working order before the cool winter weather sets in. Your forced air furnace is a machine. Like the family car, it needs occasional service and attention, advises Dorothy Wenck, Home Economist for the University of California. The most important part of the furnace for the user to check is the filter. The filter removes dust and lint from the air. When it becomes loaded air can no longer move through it, and it must be replaced. The cost of a new filter is very nominal, Mrs. Wenck points out. A dirty filter will cause: The furnace to run without giving heat. The furnace to go on and off in short cycles and become noisy. The blower to run for excessive periods of time. Dirt on the walls and drapes and around the warm air grills. High and unreasonable gas bills. You can save more than the cost of a new filter each month in gas if you keep the filter clean. Your furnace to overheat and become a fire hazard in your home. A well cared-for furnace provides pleasant comfort for you and your family. A neglected furnace can be a dangerous hazard.
