Seven Returning Letters
Spark to Western Row
By RICK McQUISTON
With hopes for improving on last year's 8-6, third place league mark, Western basketball coach LeRoy Stevens welcomes back a cage crop centered around seven lettermen from last year's squad.
So far, Stevens feels his hopefuls have looked "mediocre" because his main offense and rebounding guns — Julio Mendex, Doug Mooers, and Steve Brad — have just reported to practice, all just winding up the season on the Pioneer grid team.
According to Stevens, guards Steve Tanner and Chuck Clendenen, and last season's leading JV scoring ace, Jim Henderson, have been the most impressive in drills.
The former Chapman College guard stated that Henderson, Jeff Dick, Rusty Williams, and Manuel Terrazes sparked last year's JV clan, and should boost the varsity quintet's scoring punch this season.
Other varsity candidates include Craig Racine, Jay Jensen, Jim Miller, Terry Haldiman and Jim Johnson, a transfer from West Virginia.
Top Contenders
Anaheim, last year's co-league champs with a 13-1 won-lost record, will be Western's top contender for the title, sporting six returning lettermen, including all-league guards Dick Hough and Pat Watt.
Newport Harbor has the offensive power to topple the best of squads including Western last season's 42-30 defeat at the hands of the Rebels. The following week, Western will enter the Huntington Beach tournament opening against Santa Ana Valley.
The following is the varsity and Junior Varsity schedule.

BOWLING SPOTLIGHT
By Jack Scagnet
A few interesting items to pass on to readers from an array of recent mail received in our office:
From Bowling Magazine, official publication of the American Bowling Congress, comes the predication that if history repeats itself, there should be a champion in the 1964 ABC tournament from the host state of California. "Champions from California have been crowned in the past four ABC tournaments," says the magazine. "In 1960 Andy Marzich and Dick Jensen of Los Angeles captured the doubles, in 1961 it was Brentwood Bowl of San Francisco in the Classic team, in 1962 it was John Gribin and Gary Madison of Riverside in Regular doubles and in 1963 the California Bombers of Los Angeles won the Classic team championship."
The magazine further points mirez who has won more 22 matches on television cally televised tournament where he averaged 214 games. He has won four championship titles and rolled three 700 series o Wally Wagner of Garden won the other Orante O spoop n the all-star tourney.
Here's an interesting from the publicity department of the Woman's Interna-Bowling Congress (WIEC) Columbus, Ohio:

Pirates To Play NE in Rose Bowl
It will be the Eastern Conference in the Junior Rose Bowl for the second year in a row.
Orange Coast College's unbeaten, untied Pirates received the bowl bid today from western schools chairman Jerome Graves and will make the Dec. 14 trip to Pasadena to play the Norsemen of Northeastern Oklahoma.
It will be the first Junior Rose Bowl appearance for the Pirates, but they played in the Potato Bowl in 1956 and the Orange Show Bowl in 1962. The Pirates beat Glendale 23-16 in the Orange Show Bowl. Stockton beat Orange Coast 20-12 in the Potato Bowl.
Northeast Oklahoma has made two unsuccessful trips to Pasadena. The Norsemen lost to Bakersfield 13-6 in 1953 and bowed to Santa Monica 30-12 in 1958.
Santa Ana, Orange Coast's bitter rival from down the street, represented the west in the junior college classic last year and blanked Columbia Basin College of Washington 20-0 in a record-smashing defensive performance.
Last year's game was ironic in that the eastern representative was located further west than the western school. But the western representative must always come from California.
Orange Coast has won its last 11 games in a row while streaking to an 18-1 record under coach Dick Tucker. The Pirates' only loss in Tucker's two year stay as head coach was at the hands of national champion Santa Ana last year, 34-12.
Tucker's Pirates steamrolled to a perfect record this year. In the title showdown, the Pirates ripped Mt. San Antonio 50-14. It was the Mounties' only loss of the season. Mt. San Antonio will get either the Potato Bowl or Elks Bowl bid.
Orange Coast's closest call this season was a 13-6 struggle with northern county rival Fullerton. Tucker claims Fullerton was the best team the Pirates faced this year.
Orange Coast will sign the contract Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. in public ceremonies in Basil H. Peterson Gymnasium on the OCC campus.
Usually the contract is accompanied by special celebrations. Last year Santa Ana students made the county court house ta Ana-City Hall.
But the celebration is to be of subdued nature tomorrow. The nation of the loss of President Obama has dimmed the luster bid.
Orange Coast football will turn out in full Wednesday afternoon at JRB photo day.
Since closing the seas a 46-0 win over Chaffee rates have worked out; keep their legs in shoefensive unit work; the wrestling room last during the rain. They worked out in sweats.
Tucker said the Pirate return to regular practices now that they which bowl they are go Northeast Oklahoma into the game with an 9-0 mark. The Norsemen given the edge over Perr, Miss.

Usually the contract signing is accompanied by spontaneous celebrations. Last year the Santa Ana students marched on the county court house and Santa Ana City Hall.
But the celebration is expected to be of subdued nature at OCC tomorrow. The national tragedy of the loss of President Kennedy has dimmed the luster of the bid.
Orange Coast football players will turn out in full uniform Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 for JRB photo day.
Since closing the season with a 46-0 win over Chaffey, the Pirates have worked out lightly to keep their legs in shape. The defensive unit worked out in the wrestling room last week during the rain. The offense worked out in sweats.
Tucker said the Pirates will return to regular practice sessions now that they know to which bowl they are going.
Northeast Oklahoma will go into the game with an identical 9-0 mark. The Norsemen were given the edge over Pearl River, Miss.
