National Rodeo Coming to LA
LOS ANGELES — Bucking stock for the National Finals Rodeo, Nov. 26-Dec. 1 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena, will be picked from rodeo stock contractors throughout the United States and Canada.
Like the cowboys who ride them, the horses and bulls must qualify for the NFR on their records during the year.
For example, more than 4000 broncs will have bucked in something like 540 rodeos this year.
Only the very best among them will be selected and transported here.
Saddle broncs generally weigh from 1100 to 1400 pounds. Bareback broncs may be as small as 900 pounds, balancing their small weight with quicker action.
Bulls average about 1400 pounds but some of the heftier ones exceed a ton in weight.
Less than 25 years ago, bucking horses were plentiful. Big, snorty broncs carrying the bloodlines of workhorse and thoroughbred, an ideal mixture for spontaneous combustion under a cowboy, grazed by the hundreds on the grassy plains and buttes of the Northwest.
Today, with professional rodeo all over the continent, the stock contractor faces a difficult problem. Gone are the vast horse ranches, swept away in the wake of mechanized ranching.
Bucking horses have to be found in unexpected places. Big John, 1962's Bucking Horse of the Year, for example, originally was sold as part of a Canadian work team. The buckskin gelding, World's Fair, was a reining horse until he gave into the impluse of flattening unsuspecting riders.
