Anaheim Gridde By DOUGLAS HUFF More than 34,000 local high school gridiron fans are expected to jam La Palma Stadium this week for three nights of high school football at its best. Games on tap for the fans will be Thursday night's Orange League finale with Loara Saxons pitted against San Juan Capistrano, Friday night's Sunset clash with Anaheim Vs. Western, and to top the card the Crewtview League title bout between the Magnolia Sentinels and the Savanna Rebels. Tomorrow night's contest between the Pioneers and the Colonists will decide who from Anaheim goes to CIF as the Sunset Champs. Western is still tied with Fullerton for first while Anaheim is knotted in third. Saturday night when Magnolia and Savanna tangle at La Palma the Crestview League title will be decided for the second year in a row between the two inter-city rivals. Carbon Copy The Crestview League Action to date has almost been a carbon copy of last year when Magnolia beat Savanna 18-0 at La Palma before an overflow crowd of gridiron fans. Magnolia then went on to the CIF Quarterfinals where they were rubbed out of further action by rugged Mater Dei. Cause of the loss was termed a knee injury to Jack Moses, the Sentinels Key quarterback during the rebel fracus. Reports from the Rebel camp indicate revenge is in store for the Sentinels this year. Last years Anaheim-Western clash was won by Anaheim in a hard fought game and Anaheim went on to the CIF Semi Finals where they were cut down by Loyola High in a televised bout at the Coliseum in LA. In analysis of this weeks game with the Pioneers, Anaheim mentor Clare Van Hoorebeck named lack of effort and a couple of injuries of key men as the cause of their recent losses to Newport Harbor and Fullerton. "They were tough despite their bad record and we had a left down," he said. "We made a lot of mistakes last week but our effort was much better," he added. "As to what kind of game we play Friday it depends on what their offensive unit does to us," he said, adding that he expects to stick mainly to the ground with few aerials. Anaheim will most likely start with the same lineup as last week with Dave Clayton at left end; Mike Avarey at left tackle; Jim Hamilton, left guard; Mike Thatcher, center; Richard Carillo, right guard; Harold Loara Saxons Challenge Capistrano Here Tonight By STEV EMILNER The SaxonVarsity, after a 34-7 win over La Quinta, are scheduled to clash tonight with Capistrano High School in pursuit of a win in the season finale. Capistrano is mostly an offensive team, never failing to score in a contest this season. This suits the Saxons as their strong defense has stood up efficiently to powerhouse Brea. The Saturday night contest at Garden Grove Stadium marked the highest scoring game for both teams (it was La Quinta's first score). Saxons Tied Loara's league record is now Capistrano Here Tonight By STEV EMILNER The Saxon Varsity, after a 34-7 win over La Quinta, are scheduled to clash tonight with Capistrano High School in pursuit of a win in the season finale. Starting lineups are expected to remain the same as the offensive force of coach Herb Hill's Saxons shows great improvement. The Saxon offense is built around the consistent running and kicking abilities of Jon Wheaton, and quick-dodging for gains by Fred Feetham, John and Dick Armstrong. Capistrano is mostly an offensive team, never failing to score in a contest this season. This suits suits the Saxons as their strong defense has stood up efficiently to powerhouse Brea. La Quinta Scoring records fell for both sides and Loara found a new way to win. That's the story of the Saxons' win over the Aztecs of La Quinta by a score of 34-7. The Saxons got out of the 7-6 win rut, as all the previous Loara victories in Orange League play came to a 7-6 decision. The Saturday night contest at Garden Grove Stadium marked the highest scoring game for both teams (it was La Quinta's first score). Saxons Tied Loara's league record is now evened at 3-3 with a 4-4 season mark while La Quinta has yet to record a win in six starts. On the victory, the Saxons rode into a tie with Lowell for fourth place. Loara will probably cinch fourth if they take tonight's tilt because Lowell is set to meet heavily-favored Brea. All of Loara's signal callers saw action Saturday as Dale Winterberg started, later relieved by Bob Ryan and Dick Armstrong. Another Loara record was broken, in passing, as they completed 12 of 19 attempted passes for a passing percentage of 63. Loara Scores The overhauled Saxon offense scored on their first possession of the ball when Winterberg fired 11 yards to halfback John Armstrong on a fourth-and-six situation. When Jon Wheaton's kick sailed wide to the right, Loara led 6-0. In last seconds of the first period Winterberg recovered a fumble on the Aztecs 33. After a loss, on fourth-and-16, Winterberg completed a 25 yard pass to John Armstrong on the Aztec 10. With first-and-goal, Wheaton took a handoff and plunged a yard for the score. Wheaton converted for the Loara 13-0 lead. Receiving the kickoff on their own 42, the Aztecs had a new chance. It was short lived, however, for on first down Loara end Mike Lind intercepted a pass, running all the way to the La Quinta 13. Four plays later, the Saxons were camped on the Aztec 2 yard line, with another first down to their credit. On second down, Winterberg scored on a booted another beauty for the Anaheim Gazette—9 ANAHEIM GAZETTE SPORTS NEWS Thursday, November 14, 1963 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA CRYSTAL BALL By DOUGLAS HUFF This weekend three games are being played at La Palma Stadium. In two of the games league Championships will be decided. But all three games promise to be filled with excitement and you can be sure that all will be clean hard fought ball games by some of Anaheim's finest young men. How long has it been since you last saw any of these teams in action? What are you doing tonight? Tomorrow night? Saturday night? Going to the ball game? If not, why not? Attend all three. Football is also a game of spectator support. A team needs to be encouraged, to hear the grandstands roar approval, to cheer him on to victory. These young men are the leaders to tomorrow. They face a long up hill battle to succeed. Nothing inspires a youngster more than to hear his name roared out in a thundering ovation. And when the game is over, to hear just those three small words, "Well done son." from both his family, friends and even you, you who may be a stranger to him. We're going to all three games. How about you? See you there. As you may have noticed, part of my column was cut last week so instead of eight games being forecast only six were. Of the six we lost one and tied one so we have a 79.1 season average. A peak at this weeks grid slate reveals: ANAHEIM Vs. WESTERN (Sunset league), Friday Night, La Palma Stadium. We seem to be having a little trouble with our Crystal Ball this week — it just won't pick the winners in two of our games. This is one of them. You know what? We see a Fullerton victory for a change. Fullerton we hear was very impressive as they rolled over Santa Ana JC last weekend. As the old saying goes, "Do it again, Do it again, we like it, we like it." FULLERTON By 12. SANTA ANA JC Vs. Southwestern (Eastern Conference) Saturday night. Lets hope the Dons can win this one. Southwestern is one of the poorest teams we've ever seen. Perhaps it is because they don't have their own campus and are forced to hold classes on a high school campus from 2:45 to 10 p.m. Must be too much night life. SANTA ANA By 12. ORANGE COAST Vs. Wheaton 12-0 halftime score in Loara's favor. Would-Be TD On the first play after kickoff, Dick Armstrong passed to Lind, who went all the way, only to be called back on an illegal pass penalty. (Dick was not behind the line of scrimmage when he passed.) Stymied by penalties, the Saxons faced a fourth-and-25 situation as they went into punt formation on their own 45. A high pass from center got by Lind and rolled to the Loara 5. Aztecs Make History With second and goal on the 1 yard line, La Quinta fullback Mike Adair took a handoff into the end zone for the first score in the Aztecs' history. Quarterback Frank Taucher passed to Larry McHale for the conversion. The score then read: 20-7, Loara. In early fourth period, Dave Dykes traveled two yards on a handoff to record the 26-7 Saxon lead. The score, capping a 33 yard drive, was added to by Wheaton's third conversion kick of the game. Trouble Predicted Reports eminating the Western camp meantime say that the colonists can and will give them plenty of trouble. Jerry Humrighouse, Western mentor, states that both sides will most likely do a lot of running and passing and be hard to hold. However he appears confident about the outcome of Friday's game. In regards to last weeks 0-0 stalmate with the Indians of Fullerton, Humrighouse had this to say: "Fullerton played their best-game of the year and we didn't. They had a tremendous defensive game and they didn't make as many mistakes as we did. "So far this season we have only lost one game and that was by one point to Santa Ana Valley." he commented in summing up his season to date. "The thing that's hurt Anaheim is a lot of key injuries and because of them I think that they suffered a letdown." Huff is back in his early season form and as far as I know Anaheim is back at full strength," he said. Tenative starting lineup for the Pioneers will be as follows: Rod Boyd, left end; Art Lehman, left tackle; Rick Hoover, left guard; Mike Lawson, Center; Jack Sailor, right guard; Kirk Wassell, right tackle; and Ken Lazette, right end. In the backfield for the Pioneers will be John Fapottone, right half; Steve Beerer, left half; Bob Powell, fullback; and Jim Reese, quarterback. Magnolia Vs. Savanna Preparations were also underway this week in both the Magnolia and Savanna camps in preparation for their Saturday enge night day night contest at move Stadium marked at scoring game for (it was La Quinta's). Saxons Tied league record is now TILLER TACKLED — Duane Francis, 165 pound fullback, is about to be tackled by an unidentified Savanna player as several Tillers and Rebels watch the action. Francis caught two screen passes from quarterback Brian Benson good for 26 yards in a losing cause. Savanna Bombs Tustin, 28-0 The Tustin Tillers made only one major mistake last week, all the rest were minor. They showed upon the field to challenge Savanna and the Rebels slaughtered them 28-0. Savanna called the signals from the very beginning coming up with a 14-point lead in the first quarter. A 42-yard march in nine plays started things out with the conclusion of the drive being at the Tillers endzone and the ball in the hands of Rebel Steve Conley. Larry Hall kicked the PAT and the score was 7-0, Savanna. Forced to punt on their own 42, the center went bad and the Tillers were forced to chase the ball back to their seven so the Rebels could take over. From there the Rebels went over on in two plays and Hall added the conversion. California had 115 perfect games, followed by New York with 81. There were 45 scores of 299 posted in California and 32 of 298. Majority of the high scores were recorded in Southern California. On the women's side, the Women's International Bowling Congress reported 12 sanctioned 300 games last season. Two were from California, Rosemarie Shaffer of Los Altos and Esther Woods of Brubank. Esther rolled her perfect game at Norwalk Bowl, same place where Janet Harman of La Mirada counted a 300 in her world record series of 792 two weeks ago. High Scores Norwalk Bowl has a reputation for high scoring lanes, not only because of expert lane conditions but also because many of Southern California's leading men and women stars bowl there. Anaheim's Linbrook Bowl team last season rolled the second highest three-game team series in the nation, 3059, second only to 3100 of Freeway Washier team of Cleveland, Ohio. Speaking of Linbrook Bowl, the 40-lane center at Brookhurst and Lincoln is open for business despite water damage to one side of the center (lanes 1-to-20) last week when the sprinkler system went off after a small fire. Lanes are being resurfaced and should be ready soon on that side of the house; meanwhile, it's business-as-usual on the other 20 lanes. Free Classes Manager Wes Sorensen reports that a free learn-to-bowl class for housewives in the Anaheim area will be held tomorrow (Friday) at 10:00 a.m. Lessons are free and so is the bowling and child care. Fred Riccilli of Garden Grove, one of Orange County's top bowlers, has received an invitation to bowl in the World's Invitational Match game bowling championships November 21-4o-December 1 in Chicago. A total of 128 of the nation's top men bowlers will compete. Don Carter of St. Louis is defending champion. ANAHEIM TRUCK & TRANSFER CO. Savanna Vs. Savanna rations were also unders week in both the Magand Savanna camps in ion for their Saturday night clash. "They're tough. We've scouted them three times," says Jud Brown assistant Magnolia line coach. "They have an outstanding line and swift backs and they've got real brutes in that line." He had nothing but praise for the Rebels. "Jim Munyon (Savanna quarterback) runs his line well and we'll have to stop his running attack and play better this week if we expect to win, he continued. Brown is counting on waging mostly aground war for as he puts it: "when you've got something good, stick with it." He, like Savanna Coach Erv Kimball, admits that they have had a few too many missed assignments in previous games but otherwise have come out of each contest in fairly good shape. "Anything can and will go this week says Kimball. "We will probably play more of a ground game though," he added. He declined to elaborate any further on his plans and preparations for this Saturday nights clash other than to say they are holding heavy workouts this week. The Lineup Starting lineup for the Senti- nels will be Mike Noggle at left end; Don Potter, left tackle; Terry Haider, left guard; Jim Iantorno, center; Gary Reed, right guard, Tim Mark, right tackle; Bob Kogut, right end.
