Anaheim Man Nabbed For Tavern Killing
By DOUGLAS HUFF
A 46-year-old Anaheim man was being held today for the fatal shooting of an angry husband Saturday afternoon in an Anaheim bar.
Eugene Clifford Johnson, 46, is being held without bail pending arraignment on murder charges. He is accused of killing Donald Ray Shoesmith, 46, after Shoesmith tried to drag his estranged wife from the tavern at 115 Magnolia Ave.
Police said Alice June Shoesmith was drinking in the bar when Shoesmith entered. An argument ensued, and Shoesmith began dragging his wife outside.
She screamed for help. Johnston, who police said knew neither of the Shoesmiths, came to her aid. Shoesmith warned Johnston to stay away.
Officers said Johnston went to his car and returned with a .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol. He hit Shoesmith on the head with the gun butt, police said, and then opened fire.
Shoesmith was hit three times. He died en route to Anaheim Memorial Hospital.
Johnston, arrested at the scene, said he acted to "protect womanhood."
Johnston is scheduled for preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. Friday before Judge James F. Judge, newest jurist on the bench in Anaheim-Fullerton Municipal Court. The accused man is being held without bail in County Jail.

Orange County has a larger number of carloads of Oranges on hand proportionally than any other county, as shipments from the other counties began the first of December while from here no oranges were sent out until after the first of the year. But the crop will be all cleaned up within another month and at satisfactory prices. The new crop is setting in good shape and gives every promise of being heavy.
Trailerites

Our courts are unusually busy just now. During the week ten or twelve arrests were made — mostly drunks. In Justice Bailey's court during the same time the following proceedings were had, one for battery, one for assaults one for discharging fire-arms in the streets, one for embezzlement and a civil suit for damages. Lee Ahr was arrested for pedding without a license, and another disciple of Confuscius was arrested for hitting a small boy with a brick bat. He was charged $8.25 for his little diversion;
Our citizens do well to take extra precautions in securing their doors and windows for the night. Two or three attempts at burglary have been nipped in the bud during the week. The annual vintage always attracts into town a number of idlers of all sorts, besides the chinese and Indians. The latter, as soon as they receive their weeks pay for work picking grapes, are apt to get drunk and are then ready for mischief.
The Masons have fitted up the lower half of the Masonic building with a stage, dressing rooms, benches etc., to be used as a public hall. Rev. Mr. Staehle will probably hold German services in the hall every Sunday.

George Hagar of the province of Miraflores was in town on Friday morning. George says he is still a Democrat, but could not come to the Bell meeting because Mrs. Hager desired the horse and buggy to make some calls on friends.
