Sumner Announces
Seeks State Job
Left By Murdy
Bruce Sumner, 39-year-old Santa Ana attorney and former assemblyman, announced today he will be a candidate to succeed State Sen. John A. Murdy.
Murdy announced this month he will not run again when his term expires in 1964.
Sumner, who served in the Assembly from 1956-62, termed himself an "unhyphenated Republican."
"I bear no shades or labels," the attorney said.
Dimes March Volunteers Win Plaudits
Praising the Orange County Chapter of the March of Dimes for being a pace setter in the establishment of unique services for patients, Miss Elaine Whitelaw, national director of Volunteers for the National Foundation, commended the 150 March of Dimes Volunteers attending the Orange County meeting Oct. 15.
She reported on the major research projects being financed by The March of Dimes in its fight against birth defects and arthritis.

BRUCE SUMNER
He refused to evaluate potential opposition among Republican ranks.
"I'm not running against anybody, but on my own potential," Sumner said. "I'll conduct a positive campaign, and will stick strictly to the issues."
Newport Beach residents, Sumner and his wife have two children. He is affiliated with the Santa Ana law firm of Kindel and Anderson.
In the Assembly, Sumner served as Republican whip and chairman of the Assembly Judiciary Committee. He currently serves on the executive committee of the Republican State Central Committee.
In his announcement of candidacy, Sumner said the county is faced with new problems in the fields of education, water supply, rapid transit and freeway development.
"The growing recreational needs of our county must be met with positive recommendations if we are to maintain the favorable business climate which has been the basis for our county's precedent-shattering growth," said Sumner.
Piano Given Library
When the new library opens at Broadway and Harbor, one of its major furnishings will be a new seven-foot, $3,060 Steinway grand piano, a gift of the Symphony Guild of Anaheim.
Mrs. N. V. Salets, chairman of the guild's piano committee,
Volunteers for the National Foundation, commended the 150 March of Dimes Volunteers attending the Orange County meeting Oct. 15.
She reported on the major research projects being financed by The March of Dimes in its fight against birth defects and arthritis.
"The March of Dimes is doing more than any other private organization has ever done to fight two of the nation's greatest cripplers — birth defects and arthritis. That's the reason I accepted Charimanship of the 1964 March of Dimes campaign in Orange County and that's the reason I believe it deserves the support of all our citizens," said Art McKenzie, of Costa Mesa, in his welcome to the Dimes volunteers.
Union Project
An example of the local patient aid program is the regular respiratory equipment maintenance provided by volunteers from the Electrical Workers Union Local 441 under the Chairmanship of James Goodnough of Anaheim. McKenzie lauded the dedication of this volunteer committee who have served on day and night calls for over three years and presented a special certificate of award to Goodnough and Richard P. Martin, business agent of the sponsoring Union.
Also presented awards in recognition of volunteer interest was John Holmberg, chairman of the Orange County Dining and Beverage Association, and Richard Duckett, of the Retail Liquor Dealers Association.
McKenzie, Costa Mesa Police Chief, has held the vital post of County Chairman for several years.
Delegate
Jack Morgan, 905 N. Euclid Ave., Anaheim, executive secretary of the Southern California Tire Dealers Association was a delegate to the 43rd annual convention.
Library
When the new library opens at Broadway and Harbor, one of its major furnishings will be a new seven-foot, $3,080 Steinway grand piano, a gift of the Symphony Guild of Anaheim.
Mrs. N. V. Salaets, chairman of the guild's piano committee, told the City Council that her group hopes to raise all but $1,500 of the purchase price through a fund raising drive and asked the city to donate the $1500.
"We want to get the very finest piano," she said. "It will be a privilege for the people to come and see it and young people and artists to play it."
Appreciation
Mayor Rex Coons praised the guild and said it was very commendable when citizens work to purchase the equipment they feel is needed, rather than ask for tax money.
The Councilmen expressed their appreciation for the organization's efforts in raising the funds.
Other members of the committee include Mrs. Margaret Buttree, Mrs. Charles Pearson, Mrs. James Chavos, Mrs. David Gordon and Mrs. Frank Stashak, president of the guild, who also was in attendance at the Council meeting.
Mrs. Salaets says that her group has not yet reached its campaign goal, and said anyone interested in contributing can obtain information by calling her at 536-3863.

Model Legislature Candidate Selected
Sandy Maisch, senior student at Anaheim High School, and member of the Squires Hi Yub has been chosen by the YMCA Youth Delegation to seek election to the office of Speaker of the Assembly at the YMCA Model Legislature which will be next February in Sacramento.
The elections conference will held this Saturday, Oct. 26, at the University of Southern California, when delegations on all over Southern California will assemble to vote on a list of youth officers for the polar citizenship training unit.
“Convention” those attending will have all experiences of a political convention, in that those seeking office must bring along a supporting delegation, win friends, speak before both small delegations and the larger assembled group, electioneer, caucus as a delegation, and finally experience the agonies and ecstasy of hearing the roll call vote, and watching the tally board tell the story.
Those officers elected will then have the privilege of additional training in parliamentary proceedings, and the legislative process as followed in the State of California. By the time the date of the Model Legislature arrives in February, the officers will be well versed in the ethics, practices and procedures of a well oiled State Legislature.
Qualifications
To be eligible for election a candidate must have attended a former Model Legislature and have participated in an active manner, as well as to be a member in good standing in his local Hi-Y Club.
Sandy is well qualified, having attended both the 1961 and 1962 sessions, serving as a Senator, and has had the added experience of being chosen as chairman of the Motor Vehicles Committee in the 1962 Model Legislature.
A large delegation from the Anaheim YMCA will give Sandy the backing at the elections conference.
