The booing in the halls of the House of Representatives where the money bills originate under our system of legislation was against Rep. Harold R. Gross (R-Iowa) who spoke against several expense items and junkets by Congressmen. The cheers came when his request for a roll call vote on one of the items failed. Among the items was an increase to $2400 a year the amount Congressmen may spend in the House stationery store for gifts or stationery or draw out in cash if he does not spend it. Other items included authorizations to send delegations to international meetings, and others for extra postage stamps, telephone and telegraph bills. Those Americans who believe that substantially reduced federal spending should accompany a federal income tax cut can only regard this action of the House of Representatives with dismay. But why should we be dismayed? Today politics governs spending more than good sense and the welfare of the country's economic well-being and the soundness of its dollar. Why should we be dismayed? Every time any congressman votes against a spending bill he is charged with selling the country down the river. Democratic State Chairman Eugene L. Wyman declared earlier this week that Rep. Pat Minor Martin. (R-Imperial-Riverside) "showed that his interests are not the interests of the people of the 38th Congressional District...by voting against the tax cut" and he accused Martin of seeking to return the country "to the 19th century days of the 60-hour week, starvation income, and a federal government which refused to take a hand in raising the standard of living of its citizens." Rep. Martin did no such thing. Mr. Wyman apparently believes the mark of a representative is to vote for everything the administration proposes including tax cuts without fiscal responsibility, and spending without recognition of the increasing national debt. Mr. Wyman did not point out that a number of Democrats also voted as Mr. Martin did, and they did so because they were concerned. Even President Kennedy evades the issue that spending should be reduced. Anaheim Me 80 Years Ago A band of Indians have come in from the mountains to work at picking grapes. The fact that they had some very good horses seemed to interest Deputy Sheriff Tyler, who quite sensibly reasoned that there is only one way by which an Indian can get a really good horse — by stealing it. Mr. Fred Hartung returned on Wednesday from his two months trip through Oregon, Washington Territory and the northern counties of California. His observation lead him to believe that the grape crop of Anaheim is larger than in any of the counties he visited. The ten-acre vineyard of J. C. will be held on October 6th hear the report of the auditor committee? A buyer of Walnuts has contracted to purchase the produce several groves in this vicinity 8½ cents per pound. Although crop here is not as heavy as year, it is better than in other parts of the county, and price now being paid it is a profitable crop. Rev. B. A. Washburn, the leader of the Holiness Band, has drawn from the M.E. church request of the conference. His observation lead him to believe that the grape crop of Anaheim is larger than in any of the counties he visited. The ten-acre vineyard of J. C. Summer has been bought by Robert Hansen, a gentleman who informs us that his presence here is due to reading our article on Anaheim published in McCall's Book, "California as it is." The pleasing, and to strangers novel sight, of large wagons heaped high with grapes, drawn by four or six horses, is getting to be quite common in the streets. W. H. Edwards and wife of Westminster have the sympathy of the community for the great loss sustained by the death of both of their children. A reverend gentleman of our town, who gives some attention to the culture of silk worms, has occasion to call at a residence the other day. As he approached the house he was espied by the infant terrible who called out "come here mama, here's the man that grows tape worms." The following gentlemen were elected as board of directors for the North Anaheim Land Company last Saturday: R. H. Gilman, W. M. McFadden, Wm. Fromheim, E. Browning, A. McDermont. The board was organized by electing Mr. Gilman as president, Mr. Fromheim as secretary and Mr. Browning as treasurer. An assessment of fifty cents per share was levied. A meeting of the stockholders Rev. B. A. Washburn, the leader of the Holiness Band, has written from the M. E. church request of the conference. The picking of a bunch of grapes from a vine at Passaic six months old is referred to the times as something quite markable, but compared with production of one of Anaheim vineyards the circumstance quite insignificant. From Anaheim, there was picked weeks ago several baskets full formed compact bunches zinifandel grapes, though the grapes were picked were planted last April five months ago. It is not much to say that this is one the finest appearing young vines in Southern California. 55 Years Ago Are you registered? If not so forthwith, Registration clerk September 23rd and unless a register by that date you will a suffragette in November. Uncle John Bush came in for Yorba on Monday to register Uncle John is 79 and says he lives to go to the polls on election day he will vote for Bryan. E. T. C. Klokke of Los Angeles was in town on Saturday attending the water bond election. Fred J. Fischer, chief mechanical engineer of the Los Angeles water department, was last year elected president of the National association of stationary oilneers, which just completed convention at Denver. (Mr. F.) lectates How Funds Are Spent At no time in his recent address on the subject did he say what millions wanted to hear — that he would trim the Administration's $99 billion budget, that he would keep the public debt under the $309 billion ceiling, that he would balance the budget in any of the years remaining of his term of office. Instead the people received a promise that "no wasteful, inefficient or unnecessary government activity will be tolerated." Did that mean that wasteful and inefficient and unnecessary government HAS been tolerated? Not the way the President sees it, of course. He said he had been fighting waste all the time. But as other Americans see it, including Rep. Gross who has pointed out many interesting wasteful and inefficient spending programs in the past, the President's $99 billion budget is the bloated evidence of the evils he said he would not permit. Mr. Kennedy has been declaring himself for "true fiscal responsibility leading to a balanced budget on a balanced full-employment economy" for some time now. He has said it since he denounced annually balanced budgets as having only mythical virtues. The words are mere airy restatements of promises that budgets will be balanced in some not specified sweet bye-and-bye when deficit spending will have made everyone rich and tax revenues are so vast that try as the government might it will not be able to spend all the money.
