Sherbeck Tabs Done
By DOUG HUFF
Competition in the Eastern Conference will be tough this year with Santa Ana College and Orange Coast College picked as the top two teams, Hal Sherbeck, Fullerton's head coach said today.
"It's hard to make any predictions," he continued. "The team that makes the fewer mistakes and has the best personnel will be the team that comes out on top."
In assessing Fullerton's chances, Sherbeck placed Fullerton third in the league. "The league is tougher than ever this year and there are a lot of teams that could upset the others." he reported.
"Mt. SAC will be tough to beat this Saturday night but we've got good personnel and if we can minimize our mistakes we should be able to hold our own," Sherbeck commented.
"The rain has hurt us — we need every available day of outside practice — we have a lot of holes due to lack of experience and poor timing. I'm concerned with the overall team offense but we're much deeper than last year," Sherbeck continued.
Tentative offensive line-up for the league-opener will be as follows:
At the ends will bener and Dan Cook; be Ron Ogle and Dalguards, Terry Pitts and Gregory; center, Tran left half, Chuck Shihalf, Dave Jacques; and Dick Winn.
Fighting for the spot are Bobby Smith Hayek, Sherbeck is not to announce who will going nod until game day night.

SIDELINE SLANTS

Somewhere above Orange there is a golf course looking for a place to land.
Headed by councilman Otis Stewart, the Orange city council Golf Course Committee is exploring the outlying areas for possible golf course sites for a city course.
"We have a little park in mind to go with the golf course," Stewart explains. "This all depends on the land and conditions surrounding and obtaining of the land."
According to Stewart, the committee would like to provide a clubhouse, driving range, tennis courts, pool and 27 holes of golf.
"It would take 250 acres for all this," Stewart asserts.
It would be sort of a recreation center for Orange.
Stewart adds that 18 holes are the minimum he would like to see. "Nine more would supplement the original 18 and give more people a chance to play," he claims.
"If we have to buy the land, it will be out of the question though." Stewart continues. "We can do it on a lease we can live with."
Right now the city is negotiating with the Irvine Company for land. Two previous deals feel apart.
John Porter of the Irvine Company informed the committee that the land it wanted is already under lease, but cited another possible area.
Land in Cowan Heights and
"The Cowan people cooled off," Stewart comments.
He said Cowan gave no reasons, but added that it would have been expensive because of the earth that would have to be moved for the project.
As far as the Jones property, Stewart said the committee met with Charles Jones until Jones suddenly ended negotiations. The Jones property was located in the basin west of the El Modeno grade.
Irvine property appears to be the only possible site right now. The land Porter is checking is located between the dam and the Irvine Park stables on Santiago Creek.
This land is a little short on necessary acreage, so the council committee is meeting with Sully-Miller — the leasee of the original Irvine land under consideration. The two plots are adjacent.
Once the land is found, Stewart said the project will probably go before the people in a bond election to finance greens, clubhouse, tennis courts and whatever else goes into the project.
"It would take $200,000 for the course and the clubhouse cost would depend on size," Stewart explains.
"I don't believe the people would vote it down since the course should make money," he continues. "Anaheim is operating in the black."
"We just can't go out and do..."
WE HAVE TO BUY THE LAND, IT WILL BE OUT OF THE QUESTION THROUGH. Stewart continues. "We can do it on a lease we can live with."

Land in Cowan Heights and land owned by Dick Jones has also been discussed, but negotiations have apparently fallen through in these areas.
Stewart said tentative plans at Cowan Heights called for Cowan to build the course and clubhouse with the City of Orange taking over after 18 to 20 years of leasing.
This deal had reached the contract and site planning stage before it fell through.

the league-opener with Mt. SAC is as follows:
At the ends will be Steve Joyner and Dan Cook; tackles will be Ron Ogle and Dale Bancroft; guards, Terry Pitts and Dick Gregory; center, Tram Hartzog; left half, Chuck Shields; right half, Dave Jacques; and fullback, Dick Winn.
Fighting for the quarterback spot are Bobby Smith and John Hayek. Sherbeck is not expected to announce who will get the opening nod until game time Saturday night.
Others expecting to see action include Howard Whitney, Dick Finicle, Roy Luttrell, Tom Hutton, Jim Miller, Jerry Gatewood, Doug Eilerts and Jim Dena.
Guard and tackle are the strongest positions on this year's Hornet football squad. Sherbeck stated. Center is the weakest point so far.
The line should be about 10 pounds heavier than last year but experience should help here. The backfield will be lighter but will be faster overall.
"How far we go in the league is entirely up to the boys," Sherbeck said. "As yet they have not really made up their minds."
New Law Hits 'Campers'
Hundreds of owners of camper trucks in Anaheim are affected by a new state law.
The state is catching up with the "camper" craze.
Law changes now in effect give the Department of Motor Vehicles a clear directive to decide whether individual vehicles require commercial or passenger car registration.
Some owners of these campers should apply immediately for a correction of vehicle registration at the nearest DMV office, state officials said.
The key as to whether the vehicle requires commercial or passenger car license plates depends on whether camper bodies are attached permanently or temporarily to pickups.
Permanent
Pickups with camper bodies permanently attached will be classified as passenger cars for vehicle registration purposes. In this category, the vehicle will be defined as "House Cars," which is shown on registration cards as HSCR. As house cars, the vehicles are not subject to commercial weight fees, but will be subject to vehicle license fees based on the assessed valuation of the camper body in addition to registration and vehicle license fees for the pickup.
Temporary
Pickups with camper bodies temporarily attached will be classified as commercial vehicles, which are designated PUCP on registration cards. This category of camper will be available.

La Palma Grid Schedule Given
When Loara met Nogales of La Quente Thursday they kicked an unprecedented 24 game schedule at La Palma Stadium.
Preparing the turf for the rough and tumble line-up was a crash program for Anaheim's Park and recreation Department.
Following the rodeo last summer, the stadium, located at Harbor and La Palma, was reseeded and, despite the heavy traffic of the American Legion baseball tournament, has been nursed into healthy green for Anaheim'sidiron season.
Two or three games will be played every week-end between New and Nov. 16. In addition, other events and post-season games may be scheduled at the stadium.
The schedule for football at La Palma Stadium is:
Sept. 27. Anaheim vs. Redlands.
Sept. 28. Magnolia vs. Newport arbor
Oct. 4 Anaheim vs. Westminster
Oct. 5 Magnolia vs. Buena Park
Oct. 10 Loara vs. Corona del Arbor
Oct. 11 Magnolia vs. Garden ove.
Oct. 12 Western vs. Newport
Oct. 17 Servite
Oct. 18 Savanna vs. La Habra
Oct. 19 Loara vs. Laguna Beach
Oct. 24 Anaheim vs. Newport arbor
Oct. 25 Western vs. Westminster
Oct. 31 Western vs. Costa Mesa

Tomorrow night Loara's scrambling Saxons will take on the Carpenteria Warriors on their opponent's field at 8 p.m. This contest will mark Loara's second and final prep game.
Thursday, the Saxons opened their 1963 season in style by defeating the Nogales Nobles 14-8 at La Palma Stadium. It was Loara's first victory over Nogales, as their last meeting resulted in a 7-7 tie.
Springing from a 8-7 halftime deficit, Coach Herb Hill's Saxons held the Nobles scoreless, while scoring the winning touchdown and conversion in the fourth quarter.
Loara Defense
After receiving the opening kickoff on their own 34, Nogales drove to the Saxon 7-yard line to be halted by strong Loara defense and a five yard penalty.
After moving to the 15, a high pass from center on a punt rolled into the end zone for a safety and the Nogie lead, 2-0.
Battling back in the second quarter, Loara scored its first touchdown of the game on a 43-yard drive climaxed by quarterback Dick Armstrong's push for one yard and the 6-2 lead. Sophomore Dave Dykes ran the conversion to pad the Saxon lead to 7-2.
Fast Work
Nogales, with less than four minutes remaining in the first half, rolled over 40 yards in nine plays to down the ball on the Saxon 31. Nogile quarterback Rumaldo Rubi heaved a 30-yard pass to right end Don Elmore, who ran two yards for the touchdown. With 53-seconds remaining, Rubi's conversion try was blocked and Nogales led 8-7 at half-time.
Loara took possession on the Nogales 49 late in the third quarter. In two plays and two fine passes from quarterback Armstrong, the Saxons camped on the Noble 19 after one play of the fourth quarter. The ball was then moved by a 15-yard penalty against the Saxons to the Nogie 34. Halfback Mike Pence then ran to the Nogales 24, setting the stage for the victory play.
Final Shot
Dick Armstrong's pass was snatched by halfback Dykes, who fell into the end zone for the touchdown. Dykes then converted for the final score of 14-8.
The final shot of the run found circles are not subject to commercial weight fees, but will be subject to vehicle license fees based on the assessed valuation of the camper body in addition to registration and vehicle license fees for the pickup.
Temporary
Pickups with camper bodies temporarily attached will be classified as commercial vehicles, which are designatedPUCP on registration cards. This category of camper will be subject to weight fees, but only on the unladen weight of the pickup without the camper body attached.
The camper body will not be subject to a vehicle license fee on its assessed value.
Owners withPUCP designations on their registration cards should apply immediately for a correction of registration so that proper fees can be determined for 1964, the department said.
