The system (SINS) is a product of the Autonetics Division of North American Aviation, Inc. The Independence SINS is similar to one installed by Autonetics on the USS Enterprise, World's largest ship and only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The equipment is used primarily to transfer precise starting position and velocity information into navigation systems in carrier airplanes. The transfer is known technically as "initial alignment." Automatic After alignment by the SINS, the airplane's own equipment senses and measures its changing positions. By keeping track of such changes the airplane's system automatically and continuously determines current position, speed, heading and attitude — all vital factors in a mission.
