BEST FUSCHIA GROWER — Mrs. Margaret Taylor, 111 Evelyn Dr. exhibits one of her fuschias to Joe Littlefield, noted authority on the plant, and Jack Davis, vice president of the Orange County Fuschia Society. Littlefield spoke to the society on the care and fertilization of the plant. He stated that the main think to remember about growing fuschias is to give them plenty of water and occasionally give them a "shower with a garden hose. He also recommendedly fertilizing them once every three weeks summer with an "acid action" fertilizer. Girl Scouts Set Up Annual Fashion Show The annual American Girl Fashion Show for Intermediate and Senior Girl Scouts will be held this year at the Broadway Anaheim Store, in conjunction with the DuPont Company. The show, to be held today at 3:30 p.m., will have as commentator Carole Lee Depner, associate fashion advisor of the American Girl Magazine, and will follow a theme of "Easy Does It" fashions, and "Head To Toe" good grooming hints. "Easy-Does-It" fashions will include the newest eased silhouettes with relaxed lines, and the newest colors in easy to wear, easy to care for fabrics. Included will be a feature on good grooming. The American Girl's day by day schedule for head to toe sparkle will be given to every girl that attends the show, and Miss Depner will give pointers on how girls can obtain that special glow which is the result of regular grooming. The American Girl Magazine, published by the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. for its members, has planned this event in cooperation with the Anaheim Girl Scout Council. The Broadway, and the DuPont Company. All Girl Scouts and other interested girls are invited to attend the program. Carole Depner, commentator, believes that grooming is the key to a fashionable appearance. She states "The most elegant new styles won't flatter you in the least if they are worn sloppily. Good grooming and fashion rightness are inseparable." Miss Depner started her fashion career at the Associated Merchandising Corporation, as an assistant buyer. From there she moved to the American Girl where she concentrates on the development of fashions for subteen girls. Having graduated from Green Mountain College in Vermont, where she majored in liberal arts and merchandising. Miss Depner went on to complete her merchandising studies at New York University. Drum-Bugle Corps Has Openings Anaheim Scouts Drum Bugle Corp, of the Northern Range County Boy Scout Council now has openings for some members, and is extending vitation to eligible Boy Scout Explorers to join the organization. The Drum and Bugle Corps training in musical instrument and precision marching all instruction offered by personal instructors at no cost to the members. Members Corp have the fun and excitement of traveling to many parades personal appearances, along with the satisfaction of spread good name of Scouting and Council wherever they go. Wednesday was highlighted by a camporee. Today's activities include a trip to Disneyland and a campfire that night. The scouts will return to Mexico by bus Friday morning after a short ceremony concluding the activities. The public is invited each night to the campfires and the camporee. Insurance Women Schedule Meeting Insurance Women of Orange County will hold their monthly dinner meeting Sept. 4, at the Villa Marina, Newport Beach at 7 p.m. Mrs. Leva C. Phillips, president, of Santa Ana, will conduct the meeting. Speaker for the evening will be Ted Petersen of Superior Insurance Co. Membership is open to all women in the insurance field. Earnings Decline Beckman Insutruments, Inc., reported net earnings of $3,734,301 or $2.40 a share on record sales of $78,737,738 in fiscal 1963, compared with a net of $4,823,513 or $3.10 a share on sales of $5,778,-232 in 1962. Dr. Arnold O. Beckman, president, said the decline in 1963 earnings reflected initial costs of launching a nation-wide direct marketing program and the expense of maintaining budgeted programs in the company's Systems Division during a slow-down in placement of government orders over most of the year. He predicted "substantial increases in 1964 sales." Seek Early Data A resolution originating with the Anaheim Union High School District Board requests a change in the assessment schedule to give school districts earlier access to assessed valuations. This would help in projecting a district's income and outgo. District Supt. Paul Cook points out that the exact valuation is not known at the time the tentative budge is set up. The resolution, copies of which have been sent to all districts and to the Orange County School Boards Association, asks that the information be made available before April. 'Sweetheart' Kathleen Muth, a blue-eyed blonde 19 year old ticket seller at Disneyland, has been named National Sweetheart of Alpha Delta Gamma national social fraternity. She will reign over the fraternity's 32nd Annual Convention in Milwaukee, Wis., from Aug. 28 to 31. Kathleen was selected from 15 candidates representing every area of the continental United States. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter G. Muth, of Santa Ana. Delegate Scout Executive William W. Bent will head the Northern Orange County delegation when more than 3,500 professional leaders of the Boy Scouts of America. Toastmistresses Plan for Fall Council Meetings Council No. I of the Southwest Region of International Toastmistress Clubs is currently preparing its series of Fall meetings. These meetings are held monthly at the Hawaiian Restaurant on Pacific Coast Hwy. in Long Beach. Each Toastmistress Club in the Orange County area sends a representative to these meeting, and each Council representative brings back to her group a report of the activities of the Council and the recommendations and advice of Council for the improvement of the individual clubs. Ban Rejected A proposal by the Orange County Fire Chiefs Assn. to ban fireworks has been rejected by the County Board of Supervisors. Board members said they felt fireworks were part of the tradition of the holiday. Plan Parade Northern Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America youths belonging to the Anaheim District, Los Ranchos District, Valencia District and Walter Knott Districts have been requested to have at least one unit represented in the Masonic - sponsored Constitution Observance parade slated to be held Sept. 13 beginning at 6 p.m. from Pearson Park and ending at La Palma Stadium. Ritchie in Race Darrel Ritchie of Anaheim will pilot one of nine California cars entered in the annual championships along with 391 others at the Labor Day weekend races at Indianapolis. Promoted Appointment of Joseph A. Savoldi as city manager, Los Angeles central district, for the Chrysler - Plymouth division, Chrysler Corporation, announced today by John C. Woodward, Los Angeles sales city manager for the division. Savoldi and his wife, Mary, and two boys live at 1223 E. Hampshire, Anaheim. Sentenced Henry (Russ) Ruskin, 42, former advertising manager for an Anaheim daily newspaper from October, 1957 until April 1962, and a losing City Council candidate, has been sentenced to a 1-to-14-year state prison term for passing $4000 worth of stolen checks taken from the Buena Park Pony Express while he was employed there. Ruskin has a string of bad check convictions dating back to December, 1939. Last Night Trip Sept. 14 (Saturday) will be the last night the S. S. Catalina will be making the moonlight cruise to Catalina Island. The steamer sails into Avalon Bay just in time for passengers to make the first dance at the famed Casino where Russ Morgan has been entertaining nightly.
