Scout Leader Is a Real Outdoor Man There isn't any of thet "What do we do now?" business when Harold Van Patten, Camp Ahwahnee program director of Council, Boy Scouts of America blows the whistle. Van Patten of Placentia has many tricks up his sleeve when it comes to youth activities for the more than 250 Boy Scouts and Explorers as they pile into camp on Sunday afternoon of each week during July and August. The youth leader has a wide background in boys leadership, campouts, leader training, recreational and programming. He has served for many years in the Scouting movement working closely with Placentia Boy Scout troop 100 for some four years. He worked with Troop 13 in the Orange Council assisting with the Senior events for approximately three years. In addition he was a Scouter with Yorba Linda Troop 29 serving as assistant Scoutmaster and was active in Post 299 for five years. Field activities have taken him Pilmont Scout Ranch located in Cimarron, N. M., an outdoor empire which spreads over 127,000 acres for a Council expedition in 1956. Six pack-in trips in the High Sierras taken with Scouts have also included four rugged canoe expeditions on the Colorado River. He was one of the act directors, a volunteer job on the NOCC recent "The Winning of the West" pageant, the Council's Jamboree. Six pack-in trips in the High Sierras taken with Scouts have also included four rugged canoe expeditions on the Colorado River. He was one of the act directors, a volunteer job on the NOCC recent "The Winning of the West" pageant, the Council's largest single undertaking. A heavy detailed agenda on camping, instructing and campcrafts was recently completed at the Boy Scouts of America Shaver Lake training center in preparation to taking over the reins as Camp Director for Camp Ahwahnee. Serving under Van Patten through the next nine weeks of camp will be young Eagle Scout Bill Frendel of Anaheim who will edit and publish the weekly Scouting camp newspaper.
