Explain Selection of ‘Skip’ Rowland as Coach
By NAT WESS
One of the reasons Gene “Skip” Rowland was selected to coach the South team in this year’s Shrine North-South Football Classic, Aug. 1, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, was that he was an “offensive-minded” coach.
Going along with this emphasis on offense and a more wide-open style of play, Rowland made two recommendations for players for his team that involved players not on the original list of available talent.
Open. And when that ball is thrown and if it’s anywhere near him he’ll catch it.”
Rowland spotted Bickers while watching films of someone else, but a poll of coaches who have seen Gary play would have given him the same answer. Nearly every coach who saw Gary play last season said he was the equal of end end in the Southland.
And if Rowland runs short of defensive halfbacks, Bickers can fill in there, too. Plum says Bickers are wonderful.

THE MEASURE OF A MAN
By CAROL BAKER
There comes a time when man starts growing out instead of up. Reaching his full physical stature does not necessarily mean that he is entirely grown, because it is at this time that his world is expanding — his horigons broaden. Later experience teaches him to limit his interest in knowledge, to specialize, to train himself for a chosen career. And it is at this time that we take the measure of a man. How well is he trained? Can we depend on his judgement?
Here in Orange County there is no denying the fact that Plaza Landscape Incorporated, of 13068 Century Blvd., in Garden Grove is your dependable, quality Landscape Contractor, thoroughly trained and experienced in the work of landscape design and development. Plaza Landscape Incorporated, your Landscape Designer for beautiful “Meredith Manor” homes, located between Harbor and Lemon, on Orangefair, in Fullerton, specializes in residential and commercial installations, complete sprinkler systems, pools, waterfalls, fences, patios and lawns.
Call on Plaza Landscape Incorporated and take your measure of "creators of distinctive landscape."
Anaheim Plant Turns out New Guaging Device
A new solid-state version of the versatile capaciance - actuated "Level-Tel" continuous level measuring system has been developed by Robertshaw Controls Company's Aeronautical and Instrument Division, at Anaheim.
The new system will be exhibited publicly for the first time at the 18th annual Instrument-Automaton Exhibit of the Instrument Society of America, to be held September 9-12 at McCormick Pl., Chicago.
The Model 155 "Level-Tel" system consists of two basic units — a transistorized detector unit compactly housed within a 4-inch condulet mounted on the vessel electrode, and a display unit with integral power supply — which are connected by unshielded three-wire cable.
Model 155 operates on the same principle as other Robertshaw capacitance instruments, and is capable of measuring liquids, slurries, and granular solids or powders, irrespective of viscosity, conductivity or corrosion extremes.
Other products which will be featured by the Aeronautical and Instrument Division in the Robertshaw display include the new transistorized Model 305 "Level-Tek" fixed-level detector and the recently introduced "Microsen" electronic process control line of solid-state indicating controllers, four-inch strip chart recorders, and peripheral equipment.

ROBERT G. GOLBACH
A tyro-golfer and a member of the National Sales Management Association, the National Sales executives Association and the Navy League of the United States, Golbach is "looking forward to the opportunity of meeting the fine people of Orange County."
"The area is wonderful, and the Tangney has been an instructor for the past two summers with the department and placed runner-up in Anaheim's men's doubles tournament. He also was a quarter-finalist in the La Jolla Invitational Tournament. He has taught private lessons and ranks Bobby Hutchenson as "the best player he ever taught."
Hutcherson won three medals in the "Olympic Games for the Deaf". She placed second in the women's doubles, third place in the singles and fourth in the mixed doubles.
Another teacher is Gary Dowdle, who is an instructor and tennis coach at Trident Junior High School. A newcomer to Anaheim, Dowdle lived most of his life in Salt Lake City. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1960 and began his teaching career in Anaheim that fall.
This is his second year with the department, having taught last year at the center at Magnolia High School. Dowdle played one year for the University of Utah and participated in numerous tournaments in Utah and California.
Club President
Presently, he is president of the Anaheim Tennis Club. Commenting on the game of tennis, Dowdle said, "As a game, children can play, as well as adults. It combines more than any other sport, the values of exercise, team and individual play, discipline and self-control".
Another mother who has found the enjoyment of teaching youngsters is Kay Nelson. She started playing tennis as a teenager in Texas. Later she played in Idaho and Utah. The wife of a former Gunnar Myrdal, Swedish economist and scholar, said "we all know deep down that if we cannot radically change the present nutritional situation in the world, there will not be peace...".
Milk production in 1962 rose to 401 billion pounds in 18 leading countries supplying 80 per cent of the estimated total world output, compared with the 396 billion pound figure for 1961.
A native of Long Beach, Art Furcron, presently a teacher in Newport Beach, started playing tennis when he was 12 years old. He lettered three years at Long Beach Poly where he helped bring them three championships. Then at Long Beach City College, Furcron was a member of the varsity team that won two titles.
Student on Staff
The only student on the tennis staff is Jeanne Ziegler. She picked up her first racket when she was 17. That was five years ago. The same summer she won the Buena Park women's singles.
So impressed with the tennis game, Jeanne played in the Anaheim City Tournament and the Orange County Tournament and picked up first place cups in each tourney. Last spring, she managed to upset a seeded player and get to the semi-finals of the Northern California Women's Intercollegiate Championships held at Stanford University.
Jeanne is a senior at the University of California at Berkeley and is majoring in English. She plans to be a teacher and coach following graduation next June.
