USC was one of ten colleges and universities in the nation so honored. Robert R. Nadal, chairman of Ford's community relations committee, presented the check to Dr. Norman Topping, USC President. "This grant comes at a time when it will be of greatest assistance in the realization of our academic goals under the USC Master Plan," Dr. Topping said. "This assistance is vital to USC and brings such rewarding recognition to our University that we are all encouraged to increase our efforts for academic excellence." Benson Ford, president of the Ford Motor Company Fund, said in Dearborn, Mich., that the ten current educational grants complete a million-dollar program of grants approved by the Ford Fund in 1959 to extend over a four-year period. "Appropriately, this educational aid program is being completed during the Henry Ford Centennial observance honoring the 100th anniversary of my grandfather's birth." If a camellia falls over, the tiny root hairs are torn from the root Become Southland Favorite When the camellia was first placed to America from the mid-nineteenth century one dreamed it would be such an important and beautiful addition to the flower gardens out of the land, but that's what happened. And no wonder few other plants are lady and yet bear such flowers and lush green as does the camellia. Camellia is one of a select of flowers which command sense following of garden and societies whose memory an unwavering devotion propogation. In the proper conditions, cane soar to a height of 35 feet still retain their fresh beauty. And there is no species of plant that can be used with such beauty and cut properly and tied to a trellis with plastic covered wire available at any nursery, the camellia can be espaliered to take round, square, vertical, horizontal, symmetrically crossed and a number of other artistic and geometric shapes. Just what are these conditions? To begin with, camellias thrive in acid soil which is rich in humus and friable. They like humid atmosphere and 30 degrees freezing weather doesn't particularly affect them. Their tolerance to sunshine increases the number of blossoms. Contrary to common belief, camellias are low maintenance plants, especially if proper soil conditions are created when first planted. This includes spading in liberal amounts of peat moss, oak, pine or redwood leaf mold and especially providing good drainage. Camellias should never be cultivated near the trunk because cultivation disturbs the fine feeder roots which lie in the top few inches of soil. Because a camellia can suffer if the feeder roots are damaged, care must be taken during the first two years of growth to insure against the plant toppling over from the weight of its ex-tremely heavy blossoms. If a camellia falls over, the tiny root hairs are torn from the root branches. This can be prevented by pushing a bamboo or redwood stake into the ground near the trunk and twisting a plastic covered wire plant tie around the camellia and the stake at several levels. The tie can easily be readjusted as the camellia matures. The stake may be removed after the "caliper" or girth of the trunk is heavy enough to support the plant from wind and from its own weight. Camellia species range from single to double blossom flowers and run a wide spectrum of delicate colors. When they are blooming, camellias can be sured for anything from a lovely corsage to a formal dinner table center piece... and they generally are.
