USC was one of ten colleges and universities in the nation so honored. Robert R. Nadal, chairman of Ford's community relations committee, presented the check to Dr. Norman Topping, USC President. "This grant comes at a time when it will be of greatest assistance in the realization of our academic goals under the USC Master Plan," Dr. Topping said. If a camellia falls over, the tiny root hairs are torn from the root branches. This can be prevented by pushing a bamboo or redwood stake into the ground near the trunk and twisting a plastic covered wire plant tie around the camellia and the stake at several levels. The tie can easily be readjusted as the camellia matures. The stake may be removed after the "caliper" or girth of the trunk is heavy enough to support the plant from wind and from its own weight.
