People's 'Divine Right' Basic U.S. Philosophy
(Editor's note: The Declaration of Independence is one of the most magnificent documents of all time. It's hope, philosophy and creed have inspired men of all races in all lands who yearn for freedom and cherish liberty. It is a mighty weapon in our arsenal of freedom and one which we have employed only on a limited basis in our struggle to set men free and battle communism. For these reasons, among many, we are presenting the major portion of a Fourth of July speech by James Mussatti, one-time professor of American history at the University of Southern California, for years General Manager of the State Chamber of Commerce. Mussatti has made many contributions to his state and country, but above all else he is a great dedicated and practicing American.

SAN MATEO — The Declaration of Independence is the greatest document given to the world since the publication of the Bible because it remains to this day as the most eloquent defense of popular rule that you can find in the English language.
Jefferson, who was the author of the Declaration, gave it a quality of timelessness and a quality of universality which makes its philosophy as sound in 1776 as it was in 1775. He made a powerful attack on monarchy as an institution of government. He extolled the virtues of a republic. He pointed out that the cause of America was really the cause of entire mankind. By the first of April of 1776, 120,000 copies of the book were sold. It is estimated that over 500,000 copies were sold during the years 1776 and 1777. If we apportion this to the population of the United States today it would mean the publication of 46,000,000 copies.
The matter of the issuance of a statement of independence came before Congress on June 7, 1776.
The committee delegated the task of drafting the Declaration to its chairman, Thomas Jefferson. The author was a young man, 33 years of age, a fine penman, noted as a scientist but he was not a very good public speaker.
He was of a nervous disposition and his nervousness is carried over into the language of the Declaration of Independence. It is interesting to note that the epitaph on Jefferson's tomb at his home at Monticello lists the three things by which Jefferson wanted to be remembered to his posterity — "Author of the Declaration of Independence — of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom — Father of the University of Virginia." No mention is to be found of the fact that he was our Ambassador to France, the first Secretary of State under the Constitution, Governor of Virginia, Vice President of the United States and President of the United States invariably the same type of evinces a design to reduce under absolute Despotism, their right, it is their duty throw off such Government to provide new Guards for future security."
The right to representation the determination of the district property is an inherent right, which no authority can away. People are the basis political authority. No person good enough to govern any person except with the other son's consent.
When we celebrate the Fifth of July, we are not only celebrating the Declaration of Independence but we are commemorating the 56 Americans who in 1776 courage to stand together this philosophy.
The job of government is protect freedom and to foster growth of the nation, not to if and not to destroy the institution of human freedom. What the 56 framers of the Declaration of Independence had down to their posterity. They a great faith — faith in themself — faith in the cause of the Revolution — faith in the future nation and faith in God. "Presented a challenge to us," presented a challenge to us, "challenge is the ability to maintain freedom."
Freedom today is more seriously threatened than at any time in our history. We are living in world where moral principle ruthlessly ridiculed; and there are people within our own land...
Jefferson, who was the author of the Declaration, gave it a quality of timelessness and a quality of universality which makes its philosophy as sound in 1963 as it was in 1776.
The greatest event in American history and one of the greatest events in the history of the world was the independence of the United States of America. As a result of that independence, we brought more freedom to more people in a larger area for a longer time than any other nation that ever existed in this world of ours. The men who gave us the Declaration of Independence were not just simply repudiating a king, they were founding and establishing a republic. They were denying the divine right of kings by establishing what I choose to term the divine right of the people.
The movement for independence started to gain support in the early days of November 1775. On January 9, 1776, Thomas Paine published his pamphlet "Common Sense". In this little booklet he pointed out that there must be immediate independence. He at montecillo lists the three things by Jefferson wanted to be remembered to his posterity — "Author of the Declaration of Independence — of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom — Father of the University of Virginia." No mention is to be found of the fact that he was our Ambassador to France, the first Secretary of Stat under the Constitution, Governor of Virginia, Vice President of the United States and President of the United States. It was Jefferson who said "I swear upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the minds and the lives of men."
On July 1, 1776, Jefferson completed the task of drafting the Declaration and turned it over for suggestions and corrections to Adams and Franklin.
On July 3 and July 4, 1776, there was a debate on the Declaration itself. The debate raged all day. But on the afternoon of July 4th, 12 of the states voted in favor of the Declaration of Independence as we know it now. It was ordered embossed on July 19 when the 13th state — New York — acquiesced in the Declaration. The first signatures were affixed to the document on August 2 and the balance of them on August 27 and September 4, 1776.
The purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to justify the American Revolution.
We must never forget the dramatic words of the preamble "When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the cause which impel them to the separation.

Where can you find a better expression of the philosophy under which this country operates — a philosophy which was better understood in 1776 than in 1963. Graduates of the four high schools in the Anaheim Union High School District were awarded seventy-two Communities Scholarships worth $11,375. This shows substantial growth in the home sponsored program. Last year fifty-two awards worth $8,121 were presented and in 1961 forty-five scholarships worth $8,775 were given for the charter effort of the association. In June, 1963, Savanna and Magnolia High Schools graduated seniors for the first time joining older Anaheim and Western High Schools.
Receiving scholarships from the Anaheim Council of Church Women were Cherill Felter (WHS), Susan Kaskaum (WHS), Mike Knox (AHS), Charlotte Reed (SHS), and Jim Taplin (SHS). Receiving Anaheim Junior Assistance League scholarship was Sandy Ball (SHS).

Autonetics
Builds Tiny
'Navigator'
A compact navigation system that will provide high accuracy at reduced cost for a wide variety of quickstrike tactical and transport aircraft, missiles and spacecraft is being built by Autonetics, the electronics division of North American Aviation, Inc.
Company funded, the N16 Lightweight Autonavigator is scheduled to be ready for production in late 1963 after an intensive period of flight testing. Its design represents another major Autonetics achievement in inertial navigation technology — a combination of reliability producing microelectronics, flexibility and compactness, according to H. J. Engebretson, N16 project engineer.
N16 performance will reflect high-reliability techniques pioneered by Autonetics in the U.S. Air Force Minuteman ICBM program. Now a standard of the aerospace industry, these techniques also have been utilized by Autonetics in the Navy's Polaris submarines' SINS (Ships Inertial Navigator Systems) and the Air Force GAM-77 (Hound Dog) air-to-surface missiles, Engebretson said.

James M. Ricketts has been appointed to the position of Operations manager at Northrop Nortronics’ Systems Support Department. He joined Northrop in 1971 and for the past five years has been Director of Manufacturing and Material. In the new post, Ricketts has over-all responsibility for the department’s quality assurance function in addition to manufacturing material. He reports to Frank Lynch, Nortronics vice president and Systems Support man.

Three to USC With Honors
Marilyn A. Miller, 409 W. Alberta St; Timm R. Rodgers, 433 Ramona St.; and Leigh James Unger, 2429 Greenacre Ave., all of Anaheim, have been admitted to the University of Southern California with Honors-at-Entrance.
Dr. Norman Topping, USC President, notified the prospective student of the award based upon a high school grade average of 3.75 or better — almost all "A's."
Few students enter USC with such outstanding scholastic record, President Topping said. In fact, most recently, the Honors-at-Entrance award was made to only 147 students in a class of 1800.
“You and your family should be very proud of your success, and on behalf of the entire University, I wish to congratulate you for your achievement,” Dr. Topping’s letter to each student said.
Rites Conducted For Bessie Davis
Funeral services for BESSIE MILDRED DAVIS, 72. of Rancho La Paz Trailer Park, Anaheim, were conducted Tuesday at Rose Hills Mortuary in the Rainbow Chapel, with the Rev. Willard Schurr-officiating. Interment was in Rose Hills Memorial Park. Mrs. Davis is survived by two sisters: Myrtle Schulz of the home address; Dorothy Sutherland of Long Beach; two brothers: Rev. Willard Schurr of Redlands; Bryce Schurr of San Fernando; two grandsons: Richard and Donald Davis, and five great-grandchildren.
