New Radars
Cut Weight
Two new airborne radars one-third the weight and 20 times more reliable than current systems are being developed by Autonetics, the division of North American Aviation, Inc., in Anaheim has disclosed.
One of the systems, designated R-45, is a versatile multi-mode radar. The other, R-47, is an all-weather radar capable of following terrain.
Both systems make maximum use of 20 standard microelectronic circuits developed by Autonetics, as well as computer analysis of standard parts and circuits, a technique borrowed from the division's Minuteman missile guidance and control program.
Autonetic Vice President Donn L. Williams said these approaches are a "first" in the radar industry, and assure development of the most reliable radars available. Other features are their maintainability, flexibility and high performance. First flight test operations, to check the terrain-following mode, is planned for this summer.
The R-45 is for use in transports, helicopters or high speed attack aircraft. Unique design permits efficient operation at tilt extremes of 250 to 60,000 feet and speeds Mach 2.5.
