Nearly 6,000 Back in High School For Intensive Summuer Day Study Close to 6,000 students have returned for additional Junior and Senior High School credits at summer sessions courses offered by the Anaheim Union High School District. According to Allen C. Nelson, Chairman of Summer School Principals for the District this represents an increase of nearly 50 per cent over the registration a year ago. Nelson estimates that some 60 per cent of the summer students will either be "making - up" a subject required for graduation, or attempting to raise their grades in subjects already completed. The balance, he said, are taking courses of their own volition, to develop special skills in areas that are not necessarily a part of the requirements for a High School diploma. It is estimated that between 40 and 50 per cent of those students who "dropped out" during the regular school year will return to earn sufficient credits during this and subsequent summer sessions, if necessary, so that they may graduate with their classes. Commenting on the unusually high Summer School registration, AUHSD Superintendent Paul W. Cook said, "It is most encouraging to see this unmistakable evidence of a serious and growing interest in the importance of education on the part of our young people. While I like to think that much of its results from our effort in the schools, I know that a great deal of credit is due the parents and others who recognize that learning is one of the first responsibilities of citizenship. Most of all, these students are to be congratulated for what can well as an example to others." Of the District's five Senior High Schools and ten Junior High Schools, summer class will be available only in the following OFFICE—HOME SUPPLIES STATIONERY—GIFTS OVER 50,000 ITEMS W 139 W. Lincoln WEBER'S DOWNTOWN ANAHEIM SPACE VICTORY By Carol Baker When Gordo Cooper plunked down in the Pacific after 34 hours in space, the whole world knew that nothing is as easy as it looks! How many of us I wonder could orbit the earth twenty two times, take over the controls and splash down smiling? Yes, it takes a lot of scientific know how to be a hero in space today! It isn't so different on planet earth either. We need a cool, precise plan for our earthly operations, for a go-decision and a perfect splashdown. Take the trucking lines. Did you ever stop to think what your life would be like without them? With 90 percent of our necessities being trucked to us, would we have a life at all? Thanks to the Oertly Brothers Trucking Company, of 12891 Nelson, in Garden Grove, all systems are A-ok; because when the target is hit by the Oertly Brothers Trucking Company, serving California since 1937, and specializing in general commodities, with overnight service to northern California, all intermediate points, and complete southern California coverage, there's been a victory over earthly space! Of the District's five Senior High Schools and ten Junior High Schools, summer class will be available only in the following Western and Savanna High Schools, and Ball, Brookhurst Oak, and Sycamore Junior High Schools. Junior High program will be headed by Mrs. Elayne Hofmann, Vice - Principal at Brookhurst, Nelson, Vice - Principal at Western, and Cliff Rothrock, incoming Vice - Principal at Savanna, will serve as summer principals in their schools. Others serving as summer principals will be: William Small, Ball; Junior High School; Edward J. Austin, Jr., Sycamore Junior High School; and Dale Schroeder, Oak Junior High School. Annual expenditures by the Veterans Administration range from $3.5 million in Alaska to more than $567 million in California. They total more than $6 billion exerting stabilizing influence on the nation's economy. Huff received his Woodbadge Training certificate last week at the Walter Knott District Meeting, after two years of work toward it. The Woodbadge program is a special program for adult Boy Scouts. Its purpose is to train scouters how to train other leaders in the Council and thus improve the quality of scouting in the council. Huff was selected in 1961 by the Northern Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts to attend the special eight-day course held at a mountain training site in Northern California. Upon his return from the course he was required to serve the capacity of an adult trainer. He is currently the Leader Training Chairman for the Walter Knott District, which includes parts of Anaheim and several other neighboring cities. Huff has been active in the Scouting movement for 12 years. He joined as a committee member of Pack 109C in LA when his oldest son Jess, now 20, became a cub scout. He served for a time as a cubmaster while his second son, Doug, now 18, was also in it. In Anaheim he has been both a Cub Scout and Troop Committee Chairman, Assistant Scoutmaster for troop 16, and brother member of the Order of the Arrow, a fraternal camping organization of the scouts. In 1962 he was awarded the Order of the Golden Bear and in 1961 he received the Scoutmasters Training Award. Flares Urged As Accessory One good way to add to your safety on our modern highways, points out the National Automobile Club, is to carry flares with you in your car. If you do have to make an emergency stop some dark night on the narrow shoulder of some busy highway or on the pavement of some freeway, you'll have a comfortable feeling when you set these flares to burning, one about 100 feet in advance of your car and another about 100 feet behind. The laws says that such flares should be the kind that burn red. Visible from a considerable distance, they give fair warning to other drivers that your car is stalled up ahead and that it's time for them to come to a stop or to move carefully around you.
