Pacific Phone Display Augurs Better Thinking The world must certainly be on the verge of being able to fulfill the philosopher's prayer for all to have the ability to communicate understandingly. The only question that night remain is the wonder of, not that it is being done, but how is it being done. This is at least one reaction to an examination of some of the latest equipment on display in the Pacific Telephone's new regional marketing headquarters in the Union Bank Building in Orange. Newsmen and other interested representatives of the communication-user's world were treated to a "Cook's tour" of the center during the past week. Now the blur of tape sets a scene, raising and lowering lights, opening doors, starting informative movies to interface the data or knowledge being transmitted. It would seem but a minor step, what with generation-old scramblers, to hook up the world on a personal basis and erase tensions by "taking the language" of the receiving tongue. Variety of Items But these devices are only some of the displayed items in the new center. There is a new lure in switchboards, in finger-saving dial cards touch-tone dialing and a host of new telephones. The miniaturized switchboard "Centrex" is one of the interest-attracting items. No larger than a typewriter, it is designed for firms requiring many telephone lines. But this PBX equipment permits incoming calls directly to a desired party, bypassing the operator; transfers of calls within the office; and more detailed billing. Howard Heith, who heads the Anaheim District offices for Pacific Telephone, has assured viewers of the new center they will find answers to their communications problems there. It probably will be with equipment ready for installation on fairly short notice. It could be with devices on display that are still in the development stage. For example, one of the new handy telephone handsets is worth about $10,000. It's the only one there is, so far. But the cost, by the time they are in the office or home — well, the price will be shaved considerably, says Heith.
