80 Years Ago This Week, 1883
A real estate sale of considerable importance was consummated during the week. The 20 acre tract of land lying southeast of town, owned by John Hanna for a number of years has been sold by him to Messrs. Thomas Bennet and L. A. Kelley of San Francisco and J. E. McCreery of Philadelphia, the first two named taking six-elevenths of the tract and the latter five-elevenths. The price paid was $18,700. We understand that is the intention of the purchasers to set out the entire tract in vines, apricots, pears and prunes and have the place managed by a superintendent for the first year or two, after which a number of families will settle down upon the tract. The scheme is entirely practicable, and with judicious management it can hardly fail of success. The soil is excellent, naturally moist, and requires winter irrigation only. It is convenient to town and when the vines shall blossom and the trees yield fruit there will be few places in the state more attractive. There are other tracts in this vicinity which could be worked upon the same plan and we hope this initiative move will be the means of stimulating others to go and do likewise.

Angels of Gold Aid Boys Work
The Angels of Gold (Angelitos do Oro) Orange Coast area auxiliary for Big Brothers of Orange County, culminated their annual efforts in behalf of this community service organization by presenting a check to Big Brothers of Orange County for $34,650.
The money was raised entirely from proceeds acquired as a result of the auxiliary's sponsorship of the annual invitation "Golden Ball" which feted 400 guests recently at the Newporter Inn, and from the sale of advertising space in their Gold Book which is a pictorial engagement calendar published in conjunction with the ball.
The ball itself, and the entire production of the Gold Book, was handled personally by the ladies in the 50 member Angelitos de Oro auxiliary, which organization is dedicated to raising funds to help provide proper guidance for troubled, fatherless boys in Orange County.

Vanguard of Orange county's gigantic valencia crop moved to the Orient, Europe and to domestic markets this week.
While the total shipped from Anaheim district amounted to only seven cars, the start of the season was auspicious. Three cars were scheduled for the Orient, two for European distribution out of London, and two for domestic consumption east of the Mississippi river.
Only Governor James E. Rolph's signature is needed to make certain the creation of the Orange County water district, as proposed in the measure drawn up after two years of negotiations between various county groups interested in the Santa Ana basin underground supply of water.
The assembly approved the measure Monday by a 44 to 12 vote, sending it to the governor for signature.
President H. H. Hale and Superintendent William P. Wallop of the Anaheim Union Water company and President Ralph J. McFadden of the Orange county farm bureau were among the farm leaders of Orange county who made special trips to Sacramento to help in getting the measure enacted into law.
