Expect 10,000 in Classes at City P Instructions On Red Cross Basic Design By MRS. ANN DEBOLT (Another in the series of articles on activities of the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department.) Anaheim Parks and Recreation Department expects 10,000 to 12,000 participants in their swimming classes this summer, according to Dave Sommers, Parks and Recreation supervisor. "All levels of swimming instruction in universally recognized Red Cross swimming courses will be offered to persons of all ages," he explained. During the pre-registration this year, swimming instructors will talk to the mothers during enrollment to determine which classes would be best suited to the children's abilities, Sommers said. According to Sommers the staff plans to use a unique idea in swimming registration at one high school gym. During the signing up, recreation leaders will provide activities for children in the gym across the street, accepting them in a "Check-in — check-out" system, which will allow time for a more free mother - instructor INSTRUCTORS GETTING THE INSTRUCTION It takes hours of annual preparation for the city's swimming program and a lot of it is spent in assuring the instructors for all of the son Park. "In order to accommodate the greatest number of swimmers, we are arranging five, two-week sessions for $3.00 rather than $3.50 for a three week period," Luna explained. During the signing up, recreation leaders will provide activities for children in the gym across the street, accepting them in a "Check-in — check-out" system, which will allow time for a more free mother - instructor talk. Definite information about the summer programs of the Anaheim Parks and Recreation Department will be given to each school child just before summer vacation. Some of the scheduled activities in addition to aquatics will be playground softball and baseball, tennis, crafts and excursions as well as Teer Club Activities and adult hobbies and crafts. Sommers said. Five Sessions Gil Luna, swimming coordinator for the department, plans to assign approximately 14 instructors to Anaheim High School pool, 14 to Western and possibly 20 at Pearson Park. "In order to accommodate the greatest number of swimmers, we are arranging five, two-week sessions for $3.00 rather than $3.50 for a three week period," Luna explained. Instructor Course Swimming instructors and water safety aides who will be employed by the department have just finished the Red Cross swim clinic in order to obtain their credentials. Renewal is required each year, he added. "We want each person to increase his or her swimming skill according to whatever ability they have. As soon as anyone has achieved the prescribed skill level and is checked out they are free to advance to the next station. Those who are out of practice can advance quite rapidly," Luna says. Glen Ave. in commenting on the program says, "Our six-year-old daughter Patty is certainly going to learn to swim this summer. We had a terrible experience when she almost drowned while trying to keep up with the skilled swimmers her age in a neighbor's pool. Children just don't realize the danger of deep water and when they move as fast as lightening, the only thing to do is see that they learn to swim." Using the early evenin swimming schedule, Mrs. Charles G. Muhle, 1424 Alpha Place, says that she and her husband take turns baby sitting. "Since moving here from Boston where the season was so short, we have become very enthusiastic about swimming," she says. "I feel it is very important that our two children learn to swim, too. Neighborhood pools are hazardous for all non-swimmers so there is the safety factor as well as recreation and fun to consider." Handicapped Help A special recreational swimming program for the handicapped is also sponsored by the department. Rick Schlichting, water safety chairman for the Anaheim Branch of the National Red Cross, who serves as program advisor and instructor, says the demand has exceeded the number of qualified instructors who are specially trained at the National Aquatics School. "We are building a staff which we believe can help post - polio or cerebral palsy victims. Most of the handicapped require individual instruction such as the two blind children who learned to swim last year. It would be possible, however, for an instructor to work with a very small group of the deaf, Schlichting said. We adapt the instructions according to recommendations of the person's doctor."
