Orange County Urged
Stand on Own Feet
Identification of Orange County as a metropolitan area in its own name gained further impetus this past week. Dr. John McBurney, president of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce urged the City Board of Realtors to establish activities and design programs that would assist in a definite demaration of this area from the so-called Greater Los Angeles area.
McBurney met with the realtors at their parley in the Disneyland Hotel this week. The realtors represent the second largest civic organization in the city. They report some 400 members. The chamber boasts of 900 members.
McBurney plugged a number of considerations that he charged warranted a definite separation of the two areas.
"Our wage scales are better than Los Angeles," our labor conditions are calm and quiescent." Dr. McBurney said, "and our crime and delinquency are at a minimum."
"We have communicated our desires to Washington, D.C. for the government static bureaus to separate Orange County statistics from those of Los Angeles," he said.
"Anaheim industry now employs 50,000 people," the civic leader declared, "which includes a gain of 10,000 in 1962 alone.
"Similar gains," he said, "are being made in other parts of the county."
The number of milk cows and heifers on U.S. farms 2 years old and over was 18,730,000 head, down 2 per cent from January 1, 1962.

Monday, Jews Initiate Passover Observance
With its colorful ceremonies that mark the flight of the Israelites from ancient Egypt, as related in the Book of Exodus, Passover begins this year at sundown, Monday evening, April 8.
The most singular feature of the Passover holiday, which is observed seven days by Reform Jew and eight days by Conservative and Orthodox Jew is the Seder. This is a home worship service of exceptional dramatic content. The table is set with foods and objects that symbolize the deliverance of the Jews from Egypt. There is, for example, the matzoh — the unleavened bread — to recall the bread baked in haste as the Israelites took flight. There are the bitter herbs as reminders of the hardships undergone by the slaves under Pharaoh in the years of their oppression. There is a sprig of parsely on the table to remind the assembly that the Passover is also a festival of spring. A roasted shank-bone is an emblem of the pasheal lamb and the haroses, a mixture of apples, nuts, raisins, cinnamon and wine symbolizes the mortar from which the Israelites made brick for the Egyptian pyramids. The youngest child asks four traditional questions about the holiday and the remainder of the service is devoted to a response by the family group out of the Haggadah, or narrative. There are also traditional songs to delight and instruct the children.
Moses is the great figure in the saga of Passover, yet it is not his life's story that preoccupies the worshipper in this holiday observance. Passover is the time when Jews celebrate the joys of liberty and draw parallels between the hardships they underwent in Egypt and in later persecutions during the thousands of years of their history. The emphasis, however, is always on ultimate deliverance and hope for the future.

"Once upon a time" as fairy stories go, a little girl sat quietly plying her needle to make a wardrobe for her doll. These were no ordinary clothes, gathered at the neck and left unhemmed. They were detailed as any real life lady's, and those who saw them recognized, even then a kind of style and understanding of fashion which the little girl displayed.
Years later that same little girl, now known simply as La Verne Potet of La Verne's originals, 221 W. Broadway, Anaheim, continues to sew, but the dolls have disappeared. In their place is a growing number of adult customers.
Last Friday afternoon at the Tustin Youth Center, La Verne presented her first show of original designs, winning applause from an audience of 150 women who showed real enthusiasm for her "at home" clothes.
There were 12 different models, running the gamut from the simplest of shifts to an exquisite white dotted swiss hostess gown touched with lace and sashed with blue velvet ribbon.
Hard Hours Of Work
La Verne's collection, which she designed and made in only three weeks of far- into - the night work in preparation for the show, represents only a portion of what she has made for her spring into summer presentation of styles. Clothes which she has inspired are round the clock fashions for every occasion.
The young woman has been making custom originals for eight years, she explained. She prefers to keep her business a personal enterprise in which she is the sole creator.
Urged to make an appearance on - stage at the fashion show she finally acquiesced, while protesting that she is really an "ivory tower" sort of person preferring to remain behind the scenes creating her designs.
She decided at an early age that she would like to be a dress designer, studied for the profession in high school and took some courses upon graduation.
Dislikes Shift
Asked what she thinks of the popular shift she said that it is not her own choice, and that she will not be sad if it goes out of style. Yet she demand of fashion with success, could be seen in gowns which shine day.
She favors the tess gown, floor skirt with a unpressed pleats waistline to give ment.

Water Bonds Get Setback On Legality
Legislative opponents of the proposed new bond issue for financing the state water project received new ammunition for their battle this week. The legal advisor for the State Legislature declared his opinion was the $325 million bond issue proposal was not legal.
Neither this opinion nor that of the attorney general who had already said the plan was "legally sound" will settle the matter for anyone, however. A test case to establish the validity of the action will be submitted to the courts.
Abbot Goldberg, chief deputy director for the water resources department, said the suit would probably be completed within a year.
The measure, brought out by Gov. Edmund Brown, has been attacked on various grounds, principally that the voters of the state should be given the opportunity to vote on the need for th ebonds. The contention is based on the idea voters had been asked to approve the $1.75 billion bond issue in 1960 and that there was no indication at that time that any further funds would be needed.

She favors the two-piece hostess gown, floor-length and slim of skirt with a slight fullness in unpressed pleats at the skirt's waistline to give ease of movement.
The little jacket idea has caught on with La Verne, too, and several hostess gowns had their own removable ones which could be taken off to reveal a more formal top. All sleeveless models, however, featured the slightly covered shoulder which La Verne lives is most becoming to the average woman.
The fashion show was completed by a showing of home accessories as a background for today's living from Lee Wagner of Lee's Lamps, Tustin, and do it yourself hats shown by Alyce's Wonder Shop.
Proceeds from the show went to the Orange County Crippled Children's Society.
