How can an ice skating rink aid in the testing of missile ground support equipment?
Northrop Nortronics found the answer recently while modifying the tracked loader vehicle for the U.S. Army's Hawk missile system.
Under contract to the Army Tank Automotive Center, Nortronics' Systems Support Department was asked to design and test a new kind of cleat for the vehicle that would ensure traction on icy surfaces.
Design and production of the cleats posed no unusual problems. The challenge was finding an iced area large enough for testing that also would support the 5,500 - pound vehicle.
The solution was the Glacier Falls Ice Arena in Anaheim where Nortronics was permitted to conduct its tests after business hours.
According to Doug Cooke, Nor-

tronics liaison engineer on the Hawk program, the Glacier Falls Arena provided an ideal test bed for the new cleats. "First we ran the loader onto the ice without cleats where the surface was still fairly rough from the evening's skating. Then, while the rink was being resurfaced for maximum smoothness, we bolted on the cleats."
Traction was tested by running a cable to the loader from a 2½ ton truck parked outside the area. The loader then pulled against the weight of the truck and traction was measured by a dynamometer. "We found that the cleats not only gave us 600 per cent better traction than the standard tracks but improved vehicle maneuverability as well," Cooke said.
The Nortronics - designed loader is used to carry three Hawk missiles from a storage pallet and place them on the launcher in firing position. It must be able to do this on all types of terrain including smooth ice.
Nortronics has been engaged in Hawk engineering and production since mid-1956, producing major film guild to show Russian productions
