Five to Star
On Bell Hour
Singer-dancer Carol Lawrence,
popular vocalists Steve Lawrence
and Eydie Gorme, Metropolitan Opera star Leontyne Price and concert violinist Erica Morini
comprise the unusual array of talent on the Bell Telephone Hour program over NBC-TV tonight at 10 p.m. Donald Voorhees will conduct the Bell Telephone Orchestra on the full hour color special.
A "triple-threat" performer — a gifted singer, dancer and dramatic actress — Carol Lawrence is a star of stage, screen and television.
Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme have a great deal in common, beyond the fact that they are Mr. and Mrs. Steve Lawrence. New-York born (he in Brooklyn, she in the Bronx), they both started singing before they were in high school. Although they had the same manager, they didn't really meet until they both became regulars on Steve Allen's "Tonight Show" in 1953. They were married in 1957.
Leontyne Price, the brilliant young American soprano making her first appearance on the Bell Telephone Hour, will sing two arias from Verdi's "Il Trovatore:" "Tacea la Notte Placida"
(Peaceful Was the Night and "D'amor Sull'Ali Rosee" (On Rosy Wings of Love).

WHAT'S DOING
Dorothy Kral, Your Telephone Manager, In Anaheim
This is the "grand-daddy" of every new telephone handset we install. It's a picture of the steel model from which we make molds for plastic telephone handsets. And it's as precision perfect as modern men and machines can make it. Last year from this model came more than 11,000,000 handsets to go with every phone from little Princesses to large Call Directors. It's a "shining example" of how good design pays off in mass-production—and telephone economy.

The dedicated young women in the Junior Ebell Club of Anaheim who worked for two years 6700 hours to raise $2500 and additional support in order that the community might have a Clinical Guidance Clinic, have been awarded this year's Mental Health Award for general services in the field of mental health as volunteers.
The state recognition came during the past week at Sacramento. Gov. Edmund Brown presented the awards which went to eight individuals and organizations. The awards banquet sponsored by the California Association for Mental Health and the California Council for Children in cooperation with the State Department Mental Hygiene.
In addition to activities in half of the Child Guidance Clinic, the Anaheim Junior Ebells devoted hundreds of hours to mental health volunteer services and donations of needed items in state hospitals and other public facilities in the Orange County Los Angeles area.

Fruit, Flower Decay
RIVERSIDE — Scientists here have turned over to industry a chemical compound found to be highly effective in controlling post-harvest decay, the cause of big losses to fruit and flower growers.
Called 2-aminobutane, the chemical prevents decay in a wide variety of perishables: oranges, lemons, apples, peaches, pears, bananas, cut flowers and bulbs.
Scientists Joseph W. Eckert and Martin J. Kolbezen, of the University of California, Riverside, believe the material will greatly reduce losses — running to millions of dollars annually — that fruit and flower growers incur when spoilage sets in between picking and processing.
The material can be applied by dipping, spraying or flooding fruits or flowers after they are harvested. The compound settles into picking injuries, where decay-causing fungi would cause rotting to start, and prevents growth of fungus spores.
