AN EDITORIAL On Combat Aircraft How many of you remember the waning days of the Cavalry? It took years for the last mounted units to actually be disbanded after the death knell had been sounded by the introduction of modern arms, particularly the machine gun in World War I. We are now, in our opinion, going through the same sort of death throes on the subject of combat aircraft. But at what cost. With the increased perfection of defensive missiles and the gradual improvement in the state of offensive missiles it was clear that manned, air-supported weapons were doomed on the battlefield. This, we felt, was apparent several years ago. The Russians have already made the change to missile preponderance. The British have said their bomber command was out as soon as the final gesture of the Skybolt was washed out. The United States is moving in deterrent posture to a reliance on some ground missile bases and a great deal on the Navy's Polaris submarines. We are constantly talking about greater perfection for our long range missiles that will "drop in a bucket" at five or six thousand miles. We have developed the highly mobile Hawk defensive missile which seeks out any hostile aircraft that may be flying low or reasonably low. We have the nuclear-armed Hercules missiles which can reach and destroy even a whole formation of enemy plan with one blast regardless of how high or evasively they might fly. But, as we said earlier, it is improbable they shall be called upon as those who say they are foes have switched to missiles. Are we under the impression that we are not present hullabaloo in Washington is directed toward the wrong subject. Eyes are bent upon Zuckert, Secretary of the Air Force, as he relates with equanimity that a contract for $6.5 billion, we repeat $6.5 billion was defended by him as proper with figures that were erroneous. This is incredible. We can only venture to grasp this incident by thinking we are at a distance looking at some murkey vortex which is so twisting concepts that within this maelstrom it is acceptable to toss off fundamental inaccuracies in justifying a $6.5 billion expenditure of taxpayer money as a "slip up." It is then understandable why they are not asking the completely basic question about the matter: why are fighter aircraft being ordered in the first place? Congressman protest they are trying to find places to save money in the budget. This seems to us to be a prime place to start. Perhaps, if the investigation is pushed far enough, it will be found the $6.5 billion order for 7,700 obsolescent aircraft was a "slip up" too. Playhouse Draws Cast of 30 Tots LAGUNA BEACH — Some 30 youngsters will appear on the stage again this season at the Laguna Beach Community Playhouse in the play by Dorothy Jane Goulding entitled "Puss In Boots." We have the nuclear-armed Hercules missiles which can reach and destroy even a whole formation of enemy plan with one blast regardless of how high or evasively they might fly. But, as we said earlier, it is improbable they shall be called upon as those who say they are foes have switched to missiles. Are we under the impression these foes are relying on missiles which are far more inadequate than ours? The U-2 incident would indicate they are capable. Their orbiting capsules would indicate they have equal technology. Against whom, then, will our bomber force operate? If our missiles will drop any bomber that flies, won't the missiles of a potential foe do the same to ours? Against whom will our fighter aircraft operate? They will not attack the missiles of a potential foe. This is beyond the capabilities of anything other than another missile, and our foes are not using aircraft to be attacked. Defensively, they should have as adequate a missile force as we and no fighter aircraft would be safe from destruction from a relatively cheap Hawk missile, for example.
