An average of 300 disabled veterans of World War II and the Korean Conflict in Southern California trained during the year under the vocational rehabilitation act to overcome the handicaps of their disabilities. They received $500,000 in subsistence, tuition, supplies and equipment.
An average of 7,000 veterans trained during the year under the World War II and Korean GI Bills. They received $11,000,000 in cash allowances.
The remainder of cash benefits, services and other VA expenditures in Southern California during the year totaled nearly $111,000,000.
These cash benefits and services included war orphans' educational allowances, hospitalization, loan guarantee and direct tax exemption according to Jim Heim, Veterans County Service Officer, and Hugh J. Plumb, County Assessor.
Those eligible for the exemption on the $1,000 assessed valuation include veterans who served honorably, unremarried widows of such veterans, widowed mothers of deceased veterans if there is no resident widow, and pensioned widows, fathers or mothers of veterans.
Mr. Plumb reminded veterans that his office will accept claims beginning March 4, 1963, and continuing until 5:00 p.m. May 6, 1963. Veterans filing for the first time must file their service records with the Assessor's Office. Veterans still in service must obtain a letter from a superior officer certifying date of entry and the fact that the veteran is still an active duty.
Widows filing for the first time must furnish the veteran's service papers, death certificate and her marriage certificate.
All claimants for exemption must present the legal description of all real estate owned by claimant or spouse in California or in any other state.
