CC Model Home 'Basketball Scheduling Not Easy,' Says Sommers Plans for exhibiting a student-built model home have been made Orange Coast College with the Harbor Shopping Center Merchant's Association. Working with Earl Wight, chairman of the center’s executive committee, college officials have set the opening of the model house on Feb. 21. The home will be on display in the shopping center from Feb. 21 until March 23, when it will be sold at public auction by the college. The project, called "Blueprint Education," is the result of Orange Coast College instructors building construction, sheet metal, ornamental horticulture and home economics putting their heads, teaching talents and students together to produce the model home. The two-bedroom home features many conveniences with the trying to set up a basketball schedule for 78 teams, which totals 625 players can be quite a task — especially when you have only seven gyms. This was the problem facing Dave Sommers, Recreation Supervisor for the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department, but according to Sommers, "We have the situation underhand — we hope." Commenting on how it's done, Sommers said, "We have 13 leagues, 18 teams of which are church divisions, 52 industrial, eight in the open and four woman's teams. Each club plays one game a week. There are three games a night starting at 7 p.m. in each gym. The clubs play Monday through Saturday." But the scheduling isn't a bed of roses though, he said. He was referring to one incident recently where he did have a mix. It seems that 12 teams all trouble," Sommers said. "However, we were fortunate to be playing at Western, which has two gyms. And although a few teams had to wait, they did get to play ball before the night was over." This year, the total amount of teams have more than doubled last year's number, Sommers said. "We attribute this to the increase of population and due to the industrial growth." The gyms used by the Park and Recreation Department are: Anaheim, Fremont, Magnolia, Orangeview, Savana and the boy's and girl's gym at Western High School. While scheduling is quite a job, Sommers states that the umpire situation sometimes can be an ever bigger problem. "But we believe we have solved this," he said. "Presently we have 25 men available for work along with seven scorekeepers. In learning with the high caliber of..."
