FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE Thespians in Play Portrait Dolls Help Promote Brotherhood BY DORIS LEE Abraham Lincoln, St. Francis of Assisi, Dr. Jonas Salk and George Washington Carver, in the form of life-like 24-inch dolls have been making the rounds of Anaheim's elementary schools lately (telling their life stories and in general imparting to their young audiences 'the feeling of brotherhood. The dolls, bearing remarkable resemblance to the people they represent, are part of an educational program called "Dolls for Democracy," sponsored by Covenant Chapter B'nai B'rith Women 1015 acting in conjunction with the Anti-Defamation League. Designed by artists who have captured every detail of face and costume, the portrait dolls (there are 40 in the entire collection) represent famous persons of different faiths and races who, through love of mankind, have strengthened the ties of understanding and cooperation among peoples everywhere. The dolls travel with "doll ladies" who introduce the dolls to the children and tell the life story of each doll in interesting language geared to the children's age level. A question and answer period follows the talks and the children are allowed to examine the dolls at close range. The unique program was presented for the Anaheim Girl Scout Council recently and at present B'nai B'rith is negotiating to present the dolls to all schools through closed circuit television. Besides their current "Dolls for Democracy" program, Covenant Chapter is active in other community projects, among them being the citizenship project at Fairview Hospital where members make bi-monthly visits with toys and clothes and gifts at Christmastime. The members also visit the Long Beach Veterans Hospital four times a year and are now in the process of "adopting" a ward of servicemen for special attention. The Arthritis and Rheumatic Foundation comes in for a large share of the ladies' time and effort, and once a year members work at the rabies clinic at Pearson Park helping to distribute shots and licenses to the local dogs. In addition to these and the various Jewish philanthropic projects the chapter also finds time for fun. "Showtime U.S.A.," a fast-moving musical with a glittering cast of professionals, semi-professionals and members, is presented annually. This year the show will be presented Feb. 9 at the Women's Club in Garden Grove and Feb. 12 at the Veterans Hospital. According to Mrs. Jay Wise, who is assisting with the "Dolls for Democracy" project, all groups are welcome to see the doll program. For further information call Mrs. Wise, PR 2-9876, or Mrs. John R. The program, second in the series, is sponsored by the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department and will be presented at the Anaheim High School Auditorium. Curtain time is set for 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Marjorie Matsushita, Supervisor for Special Events said, "This delightful hour-and-one-half show would be enjoyed by both young and old." "Seven At A Blow", is a story about two maiden queens, Eulaia and Ohlalia, who take to their smelling salts everytime they learn that the giant, who constantly terrorizes their little kingdom, once again is coming to exact some tax or bounty. Fortunately, for all, an itinerant little tailor appears on the scene and by using his wits, undertakes to save the kingdom. His clever use of subterfuge in his first encounter with the giant makes him the winner.
