Senior Girl Scouts
Receive Hospital
Aide Bar Awards
By ILA JONES
Teenagers are industrious and eager!
Nineteen Senior Girl Scouts from the Anaheim Girl Scout Council prove this statement after having completed a rigorous schedule at Martin Luther Hospital to receive their aide bar in nursing.
Martin Luther Hospital was the first local hospital to offer this vocational opportunity to Girl Scouts.
Under the direction of Mrs. Tom Neely, a nurse at Martin Luther Hospital and a Senior Scout leader of Troop No. 78 the girls have each completed at least 50 hours of training.
The training consists of fourteen categories of study in the laboratory, central supply, and doctors' offices. The hospital wards are undertaken by the girls, 15 through 17 years of age, as a further means of exploring a profession, performing voluntary service, developing skills and increasing their knowledge of health and safety, as well as learning compassion and understanding.
The aide bar ceremony was held at the Martin Luther Hospital and was filled with the joy and solemnity of a graduation.
But it also included competitions prepared and performed by the girls, showing the dedication a Girl Scout Hospital Aide.
Mr. Arthur E. Coltrin, hotel administrator and advisor, the group received an Honor Girl Scout Pin Award for Scout Caroline True. In his ceptance he responded with praise for the participating girls as well as the 50 girls who have previously completed training at Martin Luther Hospital.
Mrs. Neely presented the aide bar pins to the graduate class at the impressive cane lighting ceremony. Girls receiving this much desired cherished pin included Caroline True, Helen Garcia, Teo Goldwyn, Kathie Jesch, Linda Cotter, Charlotte Griffith, Dina Sanchez, Joanne Chappel Pat Wingate, Sue Crutchfield Barbara Enos, Jennifer Moore Dolores Smith, Donna Nylan Ceci Lemieux, Terry Ruthford and Anita Shumacher.

Y-Groups Provide Toys for Creators
Members, Families Participate in Project
“Share a Toy Workshop” is expected to become one of the YMCA’s major projects each year during the holiday season.
Under the direction of Frank Sikeris, the program will tend to combine the opportunity for service with the charm of an old fashioned Christmas, when gifts were made and not purchased.
Members and families of the Y Indian Guides, the youngest groups of YMCA participants, explained to their young “braves” the true spirit of Christmas giving with each Guide donating a toy.
These special toys were taken by the older Y-members; the Gra-Y’s, Jr. Hi-Y, Jr. Tri Hi-Y and Hi-Y groups for washing, painting, and repairing on evenings from December 5 through 19.
Approximately 300 young people helped repair and distribute the toys.
A special project for the high school groups was the answering of Santa Claus letters sent to the YMCA while youngsters made and decorated the news-print wrapping paper which covered the gifts.
On December 21 all gathered at the Y-building to help in the decorating of the tree and joined the caroling and distribution of the gifts.
