ANAHEIM GAZETTE Monday, December 31, 1982 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Children’s Fund Berjun by Rinker For the second consecutive year, Harry S. Rinker of the Rinker Development Corporation is creating a fund to be administered by county probation officer, David McMillan, for the care of mentally disturbed children in Orange County. Adding to the Rinker donation and also presented to board chairman William Phillips, is a check in the amount of $500 donated by Robert H. Grant, another prominent Orange County developer also headquartered in Anaheim. Last year Harry Rinker initiated this worthwhile charity and the fund was completely utilized for the care of the disturbed children. Last year's juvenile judge, Robert Gardner, reported that it was his opinion that this fund had most unusual merit. Women To Take Part In Annual Fine Arts Show Invitations are in the mail to all Woman's clubs in Orange district to take part in the annual Fine Arts Festival sponsored by the district board, to be held at the Garden Grove Civic Woman's Club house Jan. 31. Members of the district Junior Women's clubs are invited to participate. The Fine Arts Festival is an event for display and competition. CORPSMAN KARL WAYSS saves Anaheim youth from death. Toro Corpsman Saves Life of Anaheim Youth A hospital corpsman from El Toro was credited with saving the life of a 17-year old Anaheim youth last Sunday after the boy had fallen from a horse at the station stables. Hospital Corpsman Second Class Karl Wayss, attached to Marine Air Base Squadron-37 at El Toro was first to arrive on the scene of the accident and found William Reese unconscious and not breathing. Wayss immediately applied mouth to mouth resuscitation and Reese began breathing on his own after about ten puffs. Chief Hospital Corpsman R. R. While most entries are expected to be from amateurs there will be a special category for professional work. Coast Guard Reveals Openings at School The Commandant, U. S. Coast Guard has announced that applications are now being accepted for the Coast Guard Officer Candidate School which will convene at Yorktown, Virginia on February 11, 1963. A subsequent class for Officer Candidates will convene in September 1963. Applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 26 and hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university at the time of selection for this school. Applicants who are qualified in law or oceanography are particularly desired. Upon completion of 17 weeks indoctrination at the Officer Candidate School, graduates are commissioned Ensign in the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve and required to serve on active duty for three years. For further information write Commandant (PTP-2). U. S. Coast Guard, Washington 25, D. John Stuart Mill Noted Pianist To Appear Here Leonard Pennario, noted American pianist, will appear as soloist in Anaheim High School auditorium Jan. 5 at 8:15 p.m. sponsored by the Anaheim Community Concert Association. A child prodigy, Pennario made his musical debut at the age of twelve with the Dallas Symphony, and at the age of 19 played a special Rachmaninoff memorial concert in New York. He has appeared in the major concert halls of the world and his recordings for Capital records have repeatedly made the best seller lists. Temple Youngsters Set Chanuko Parties The seventh, eighth and ninth grades at Temple Beth Sholom Religious school will hold a chanuko party at the temple at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The fifth and sixth grades will celebrate Dec. 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the social hall. All the clases will have parties in the homes of the room mothers during the course of the week. Vakalakis Exchange Students To Attend Concert Four foreign students living in Anaheim are among the 27 foreign students living in Orange County Symphony Association's Jan. 12 concert. Dr. Thomas Lawton spoke on medicine and its allied fields, and the girls were given an opportunity to ask questions concerning college and various medical fields. Mrs. Fred Dunn of Garden Grove is district representative and Mrs. Francis Hammatt is president in charge of the American Field Service in Anaheim. The invitation follows a precedent set by the Festival of Ooera to acquaint American Field Service foreign students and their foster brothers and sisters with the cultural activities in Orange County. Local PTA Groups Aid Blind Students During the past six months many local P.T.A. groups in Orange County have donated trading stamps to the Transcribers of Orange County for procurement of three large print typewriters for Visually Handicapped Students. The typewriters have been given to the Transcribers of Orange County, a volunteer group organized to aid the blind and partially seeing youngsters of the area. These volunteers transcribe books and other educational materials from regular print into large type which enables the partially seeing student to keep up with his regular classmates. Large print materials are especially scarce for the Junior and Senior High School students. Used Cars to Have Crankcase Devices Says Control Board The State Motor Vehicle Pollution Control Board determined this week that California's used car population be equipped with crankcase control devices as soon as two or more can be approved. Previously, the Board had considered that installation of these devices should become mandatory only when exhaust devices were required on used cars. St. Jude Elects The medical staff of St. Jude hospital elected new officers to serve during the 1963-64 term at a meeting held in the hospital's staff room. Dr. L. E.
