Ground Broken for Temple Beth Emet
Construction is now under way at the site of Temple Beth Emet, on Cerritos, West Euclid, in Anaheim, following recent ground breaking ceremonies. Invocation got the ground breaking ceremonies at the five acre site was given by Rabbi Aaron J. Tofield.
Leslie Goldmann, President of the Congregation, Eli Welt Building fund Chairman, and Leonard Garber and Murray Sporn, building committee co-chairman, participated in the ceremonies. Cantor Philip Moddel, directing the Temple Choir, provided liturgical background, as ground was broken with ten gold plated shovels.
The architect, Leroy Rose, stated that the land and structures, valued at approximately $500,000, should be able to accommodate the requirements of the growing congregation, presently numbering almost 400 families.

Colonial New England did celebrate Christmas, according researchers at Compton's tured Encyclopedia, because stern Puritan colonists believed that such activities were waged and forbade them by Christmas came to the American colonies while it was the subject of strenuous controversy in land. English Puritans conceived it as "popish" and the earlier celebration as a "wash Bacchanalian feast."
Opposition of the English bishops to festivals culminated in act of Parliament in 1647 when abolished the observance of Christmas, Easter and White tide. This was echoed in the American colonies in 1659 when Pensilvania enacted a law in the general court of Massachusetts to punish those who "kept Christmas."
The law read "Whosoever shall be found observing any such as Christmas or the like, either by forebearing of labor, feasting or in any other way . . . shall subject to a fine of five shilling.
The law was repealed in 1800 but many of the Puritans were reconciled to this action. Secrete reveling at Christmas had no interference with religious devotion and offended the Puritans' sense. This intensified their tarian hostility to the religious servance of Christmas — an attitude they maintained for the latter part of two centuries in pre-New England.
The fun-loving Dutch colonists of New Amsterdam, however, celebrated Christmas as the chief holiday. They brought old customs from their hometowns.

Christmas Observance
Once Illegal in U.S.
Celebration of Christmas — the most widely observed religious holiday of the modern world — is at one time illegal in early American history.
Colonial New England did not celebrate Christmas, according to researchers at Compton's Picred Encyclopedia, because the Puritan colonists believed it such activities were whollygan and forbade them by law.
Christmas came to the American colonies while it was the subject of extraneous controversy in England. English Puritans condemmit it as "popish" and the secu-celebration as a "wanton land, especially the Christmas stocking and observance of the feast day of St. Nicholas.
In the Southern colonies, the planters celebrated the yuletide with feasting, singing, and dancing. On many plantations slaves were given a holiday as long as the great yule log burned.
The latter half of the eighteenth century saw a swing of attention to the realm of economics and politics and religious controversies became of less importance.
The fact that English and Hesian troops celebrated Christmas during the Revolutionary War may have added a patriotic note
Christian Science Is Sermon Topic
How mankind is redeemed through a scientifically correct understanding of God will be explained at Christian Science church services Sunday.
Opening the Bible readings will be this verse from Isaiah: "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined." The subject of the Leason-Sermon is Christian Science."
A citation to be read from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy states (p. 460): "The Science of Christianity comes with fan in hand to separate the chaff from the wheat. Science will declare God aright, and Christianity will demonstrate this declaration and its divine Principle, making mankind better physically, morally, and spiritually."
