Tax Share for Highways Rises
The October apportionment of state highway users taxes amounted to $37,136,228, a 10 percent increase over the distribution for the same month last year, State Controller Alan Cranston reported today.
A total of $8,794,99 was apportioned among the counties. Orange County's share was $387,-901.4.
Cranston said $23,772,529 went into the State Highway Fund for expenditure on highways, $3,469,-440 was apportioned to the State Highway Fund for city use and $1,099,960 was transferred to the General Fund.
The allocation was derived from the following sources: Net gasoline tax, $33,306,625; diesel fuel tax, $2,500,477; by transfer from the Motor Vehicle Transportation Tax Fund, $1,328,318; and from miscellaneous sources, $808.

Cancer Film To Be Shown In Anaheim High Schools
A new film entitled "Is Smoking Worth It?" has been approved for showing in Anaheim Union High School Districts, Supt. Paul Cook announced.
Made available by the American Cancer Society's Orange County Branch, the film takes the unrehearsed discussion of four teenagers concerning cigarette smoking to interweave facts proving the relationship of smoking to cancer.
Decision of whether or not to smoke is left to individuals viewing the film.
Viewers are taken through scientific laboratories where experiments reveal that 90 per cent of poisonous cancer-causing chemicals contained in tobacco smoke remain in the smoker's lungs, when inhaled.
It also shows that the death rate from lung cancer has increased 953 per cent in the past 30 years and describes cigarette smoking as the major cause of the increase.
Supt. Cook, upon previewing the film, said it can easily be adapted to the tenth grade health and safety course throughout the district as well as in physical education classes in junior high schools.
"It is an excellent film," Cook said.
He cited the unemotional pre-appeal to the teen-age level. The use of a discussion group as an introduction should provoke meaningful thought among young people, he said.
The film is available to all schools as well as youth groups and may be secured by contacting the ACS at 848 N. Birch, Santa Ana.

enrollment of orphans and children of seriously disabled veterans continues to establish new records within the California Educational Assistance Program for trans, according to Jim Heim, Deputy Service Officer.
The growth is due mainly to enrollment of children whose war was seriously disabled during war service. Despite the increased numbers of these children being enrolled, it is felt that they are many more that can be able for educational assistance for the program.
The local County Service Officer urges veterans who were seriously disabled during war service to look into the possibility of bringing their children into the program. Present marital status, the father’s home state and present income are not factors.
These children can begin receiving benefits from the time they enter high school or attain the age of 14, and can continue receiving assistance under the program until they are 27. If schooling is interrupted by their own military service, the benefit is extended until they are 30.
