Horace Mann To Schedule Yule Program
The halls of Horace Mann have been resounding with the voices of children singing Christmas carols under the leadership of Mrs. Shirley Hill, music director. A sneak preview reveals that on Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. parents will view a "Christmas Panorama" presented by fifth and sixth grade chorus with dances and choral A.D., 400 and were used to co-worshipers to Mass. Before this man summoned the people with handbell.
Bells were introduced in France in 550 and in England in 680 and were used to announce church services. They were considered almost sacred and were given names of saints and were blessed and annointed at elaborate ceremonies.
By the Middle Ages the pealing of the bells had become associated with Christmas. Poor people used handbells to collect alms. St Nicholas carried one, as did Belfana, the Italian gift-bringer who rang hers as she climbed down chimneys.
In Italy church bells rang out midnight in Spain summoning the people to the "Cock Crow Mass." The bells ring out in Australia too, but there it is warm and so flowers have become popping.
Marshall PTA Sets Christmas Slate
Christmas carols from our own and other lands will be sung for the friends, families and the students of the John Marshall Park children's choral group under the direction of Mrs. R. Quat. Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the school.
The subject of the meeting will be: "Peace on Earth—Good Will to Men," William A. Thompson, principal, and Mrs. Rob Wiles, president, will greet the guests. The refreshments will feature hot chocolate for the children, coffee for the adults and cookies for everyone.
This year, the students of John Marshall School will give a gift, instead of exchanging personal gifts. The recipient will be the "Transcribers of Orange County an organization devoted to serving and teaching the visually handicapped children of this area."
Yule Program
The halls of Horace Mann have been resounding with the voices of children singing Christmas carols under the leadership of Mrs. Shirley Hill, music director. A sneak preview reveals that on Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. parents will view a "Christmas Panorama" presented by fifth and sixth grade chorus with dances and choral verses given by third and fifth grade students.
A colored film, "Christmas Through the Ages", which gives the origin of our present day traditions and symbols will be presented at the beginning of the evening. Rev. Walter Vernon, First Christian Church, will deliver the invocation.
Unusal Carols To Be Featured
Unusual and delightful Christmas carols will be the feature of the Theodore Roosevelt PTA meeting next Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Children of the fifth and sixth grades, under the direction of Miss Emily Smith, third grade teacher, have been rehearsing at noon and after school for several weeks.
In the program, besides the familiar carols, are "Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella," "Carol of the Reindeer," and "Watt's Nativity Carol." Parents and friends will also hear "Rise Up Shepherds," "He is Born, the Child Divine," "What Child is This?" The audience will be asked to join in singing several more of the old favorites. Printed sheets will be distributed to refresh memories.
Featured chairman will be Mrs. Albert Hermanson, character and spiritual chairman, who will point up the meeting theme "We Focus on Faith." Hostesses will be the fifth grade mothers.
Soroptimist Club
Holds Yule Party
The Soroptimist Club of Anaheim held its annual Christmas party at the home of Maybelle Spencer yesterday. An "Old Fashion" Christmas, both in entertainment and refreshments, was featured, and gifts were exchanged.
Christmas bells, announcing the birthday of Christ, will peal joyously all over the world on Christmas Day just as have done since medieval times.
Bells will also be featured over holidays in street and store birthdays of Christ, will peel outations, on door wreaths, Christmas trees, and in the form ofandy, cookies and other delicatessibles, graceful symbol of tradition that began in pagan times before Christ was born.
Have figured in religious monies. Egypt used them at east of Osiris. Jewish high priests of their robes and carried bells during their services. Greeks and the Romans used too.
Were first used by Christians in churches in Italy about 400 and were used to call sipers to Mass. Before this a summoned the people with a bell.
Were introduced in France and in England in 680 and used to announce church services. They were considered sacred and were given of saints and were blessed anointed at elaborate ceremonies.
The Middle Ages the pealing
During the Christmas season. One blossom, a red bell-shaped flower, is appropriately called "Christmas Bell."
In some parts of England long before Christmas, chimes announce its approach. During the Puritan era this was forbidden. Town criers were sent out with harsh-sounding bells to warn the populace against any such celebrating.
Christmas hymns are tributes to the beautiful-sounding chimes written long ago.
For a time the trend in church bells diminished and in recent years the soft, clear tones of Sunday chimes have been missing. But a revival of interest in church bells is in evidence now and many new churches are installing bells. If the trend continues we may once again, as one poet said, at Christmastime hear: "A thousand bells ring out and throw their joyous peals abroad."
