Anaheim’s United Fund Drive Surpasses Last Year’s Total
“The Anaheim-Western Communities United Fund drive has already rocketed over last year’s goal”, smiled Robert Shanks, general campaign chairman, as he issued a special progress report on the current drive.
“Division by division”, he continued, “we are establishing record per capita donations which surpass any other United Fund drive in the State of California.” He noted further that the local drive has set the most ambitious goal in Orange County, and added, “We will reach our $375,000 quota within the next couple of weeks.”
He singled out the work being done by his three vice-chairman, Dick Johnson, Mrs. Oscar Schultz and John Wiles. They are doing an outstanding job, as are their 16 division chairman, and the hundreds of volunteer workers”, he said. “The United Fund is a community project”, he beamed, “that is based 100 per cent on teamwork, and this feeling of working together in Anaheim is what has made our United Fund stand out above all the other drives.”
He lauded the work being done by the Residential Division, under the direction of Mrs. Howard Loudon. “She, and her division chiefs — Mrs. Dayid Snow, Mrs. Bernard Jordan, Mrs. James Cummins and Mrs. Harvey Walk—are doing a tremendous job”, he said. Raising funds door-to-door is a monumental task, but already 82 per cent of the $13,800 residential goal has been obtained.
Mrs. Loudon noted that the job is accomplished in Anaheim by dividing the total area into elementary school districts. “We have sliced Anaheim into 28 districts”, she exclaimed, “and already 9 of these districts have exceeded their individual goals.” She paid special tribute to the chairmen of these over-the-top schools: Mrs. Joseph Truxaw of Jefferson, James Abrecht of Loara, Mrs. George Strachan of Palm Lane, Mrs. Lowen Casey of Price, Mrs. Charles Harrower of Revere, Mrs. Harold Franzen of Sunkist, Mrs. E. J. Ohm of Disney, Mrs. John McConnel of Low and Mrs. Charles Fenebock of Walter. Mrs. Loudon added that many of the other districts have nearly reached their quotas, and that all are doing a wonderful job.
Praises School Efforts
Shanks praised the fantastic success being achieved by the educational personnel. The combined efforts of the Secondary School Division with Bill Moorhead as chairman and the Elementary School Division with Jack Bowne at the helm, have bubbled over their total goal of $30,000. “The Secondary Schools”, Shanks pointed out. “have exceeded their individual goal of $15,-500 by $2,671.”

Much of the success of the United Fund drive is due to the interest shown by Anaheim's students. Last year, two Youth Drives were staged and the contributions were over $1,400. In this year's campaign, John McGrew of the Secondary Schools, spearheaded a

A cook's best friend is her kitchen telephone. That's the word we've heard from many a housewife here in town. And it makes a lot of sense. If the kitchen's the place she spends most of her time, then that's the most convenient place for her to make and take calls.
Many women like a wall phone for their kitchen extension; it hangs up handily, keeps work surfaces clear. Or you might prefer a regular desk set or the smaller Princess. Whichever you choose, you'll be delighted with a colorful kitchen telephone.

Bell Telephone Laboratories scientists have found that voiceprints, like fingerprints, are so distinctly individual that experts can recognize one from millions of others. Even if the speakers yell, whisper, try an accent or fill their mouths with marbles, the patterns remain essentially the same.

Fog Fosters Driving Tips
With one of winter's most treacherous driving hazards — fog — now confronting motorists almost daily in many areas of California Highway Patrol Commissioner Bradford M. Crittenden offered several tips on fog driving.
"Always use the low headlight beam. The high beam reflects off water droplets and can blind you. Never use parking lights; they not only are ineffective but are illegal to use as driving lights. Even if visibility appears adequate without headlights, turn them on. It will help the other driver see you.
"Increase your following distance. A sudden slowdown ahead then won't find you short of room to stop.
"Decrease your speed. You won't be overdriving your visibility range.
"Be alert for side traffic. A car entering from a side road is not readily apparent," the commissioner concluded.

Anaheim Marine Retires
‘Just Under the Wire’
An Anaheim Marine of the Third Amphibian Tractor Battalion, First Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, just made it “under the wire” by retiring Oct. 31.
Gunnery Sgt. James R. McLendon, of 1925 Beacon St., received his retirement papers “just in the nick of time” from Lt. Col. James L. Jones, his commanding officer.
If he would have had one more days service to perform, McLendon would have been affected by the Department of Defense’s one year extension which applied toirements on or after Nov. 1.
McLendon joined the Marine Corps in 1942 and was assigned to the 13th Defense Battalion in Panama. Upon completion of World War II, he became a Drill Instructor at Parris Island, S. C. and later was transferred to occupational duty in China with the First Marine Division.
In Korea, as a section leader with the First Amphibious True Company, he made the Japanese Seoul, Ham-Hung invasions and was with them again for “Operation Killer” in Pohang, Korea.
Since Korea and up until his retirement, McLendon was attached to an amphibious unit.
He will reside in Anaheim with his wife and two daughters.
