Students Endorse Proposition 1-A
Anaheim city hall was "invaded" this week as a caravan of Orange State College students appeared en masse to present city officials with their resolution endorsing the passage of Proposition 1-A.

Colony With Pa
With the recent passing of Miss Anna Valjean, 84, of Anaheim went another era in the long and colorful history of the "Moth Colony."
Miss Valjean, a resident of Anaheim for 62 years, died Oct. 23 at the home of her niece, Nana Yerkes of Glendale.
Funeral services were held Friday in the La Palma Chapel Backs, Troutman and Kaulba and interment was Anaheim Memorial Cemetery.
Pioneer Resident
Miss Valjean, formerly of 3 E. Chartres St., Anaheim, was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on Aug. 27, 1878. A pioneer resident, she came to Anaheim in 1900 when she lived until illness overcame her about a year ago and moved to Glendale.
At the turn of the century, Anita trekked west with her mother Sarah Jane Hansen Valjean, and three brothers, Audubon, Eugene and Ben to join her father James E. Valjean, owner, publisher and editor of the "Orange County Plain Dealer" in Anaheim.
Edited Paper
Anna, at age 22, became her father's "right hand man" as she learned the newspaper business. She hand-set type, ran the presses kept the books, and when her father passed away, carried on the paper for over a year before selling out to R. W. Ernest and Paul.
Proposition 1-A
Anaheim city hall was "invaded" this week as a caravan of Orange State College students appeared en masse to present city officials with their resolution endorsing the passage of Proposition 1-A.
Dressed in collegiate fashions of the 20's, five carloads of students, representing the Associated Student Body, witnessed official acceptance of the document by Bob Davis, assistant city manager.
The resolution, signed by Larry Cook, student council president, stated in essence:
"Whereas California's future resists with its young people, and its leadership and economic well-being depended upon their education; and, Whereas, the high school graduates seeking a college education within the next four years will demand facilities for 120,000 additional students; and, Whereas 80 per cent of the $270 million funds derived from passage of Proposition 1-A is earmarked for educational purposes; Therefore, the Student Council of the Associated Students of Orange State College publicly endorse passage of the measure."
Woman Dies of Heart Attack
Phyllis Hofacker, 531 Fullerton Ave., Newport Beach, died of a heart attack while at work at 10782 Date St., Oct. 26.
The Stanton rescue unit was called and members applied mouth to mouth resuscitation when they found her slumped over her desk. She was pronounced dead at Katella Community Hospital.
Anaheimer To Be Honored at USC
An Anaheim resident will be among four former marching band directors at the University of Southern California to be honored at the Fourth Annual Homecoming picnic Saturday.
Tommy Walker of 2469 Marion St., Anaheim, will join with hundreds of USC alumni and their families at 10 a.m. on the campus for the picnic and reunion in Alumni Memorial Park.
Festivities, which will be held in front of Doheny Memorial Library, will last until the group goes to the Coliseum for the football game between USC and the University of Washington at 1:30 p.m.

With Passing of Pioneer

Verses.
Prayer For Remembrance
There, they too learned of her
loving and gentle ways. She loved
them all and, according to her
niece Nancy Yerkes, "she sorrowed toward the end when memory failed to recall their names
to mind and she prayed that they
themselves would remember her."
Her brothers have long since
gone. Audubon became a famous
journalist, Eugene a civil engineer
and Ben became a minister
and inventor of the citrus orchard heater.
Audubon had one son, Nelson
Valjean, who currently resides in Los Angeles, Calif.
Ben had three sons; Theo, Odo
and Paul. At least report, they
were residing in Michigan.
Nephews In Army
David Yerkes, 23, a grand-nephew and son of Mr. and Mrs. S.
J. Yerkes of Glendale, is in the
Army and stationed at Fort Leonard Wood.
Anna's absence from her home
on Chartres St., leaves her beatiful garden of flowers and fruit trees overgrown with weeds.
But to those who knew and loved
her the place still recalls the happiest days. Old time colonists will miss little Anna of Anaheim.

Local Red Cross Begins Standard First Aid Classes
Anaheim Chapter of the American Red Cross has scheduled a standard first aid class beginning Nov. 13 and ending Dec. 11.
Mrs. Wanda Hayton, first aid instructor, will teach this class from 9 to 11:30 a.m., daily at Fire Station Two, Crescent and Brookhurst Sts., Anaheim.
Housewives, mothers, civil defense workers and others are urged to register for this course.

Anaheim Secondary Teachers Association indorses Richardson
The executive council of the Anaheim Secondary Teachers Association has gone on record as favoring the candidacy of Dr. Ralph Richardson for State Sution, Charles R. Darrington, president, announced today.
The Executive Council is composed of representatives from each of the 15 schools in the Anaheim Union High School District.

Day" at Los Alamitos on Dec. 5,
were discussed and, as was announced earlier, proceeds from
the charity event will be used to
purchase a cobalt 60, deep-therapy cancer treatment unit to be
placed in the new hospital.
Bob Reagan Named
For PR Position
Robert G. Reagan has been appointed executive director of the
Department of Public Relations of
the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angles. The appointment was made by
the Right Reverend Francis
Eric Bloy, Bishop of Los Angeles.
Reagan has been active member of the Episcopal Church for
his entire adult life. He was a
member of the vestry of The
Church of the Angels, Pasadena,
for four years. He has served as
a volunteer member of the Diocesan Department of Public Relations since February.
Bank of America
Dividend Declared
A regular quarterly dividend of fifty cents a share on Bank of
America National Trust and Savings Association common stock
was declared Tuesday by the bank's board of directors meeting in San Francisco.
The dividend, payable November 30 to shareholders of record November 2, is at the annual rate of $2.00 per share.

Art Show to Feature American in Paris'
Guna Beach Art Gallery has called the famous "14 Ameri-in Paris" exhibition for the month of November in conjunction with the annual Orange Council Exhibit, it was announced this exhibition, featuring 40 paintings and sculptures by American artists working and living in France, was organized by the American Cultural Center in Paris and is being circulated in this country to leading galleries under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institute.
John Sharer, art association patron, is sponsoring the event which exhibits the works of Theodore Appleby, Oscar Chelinsky, Joe Downing, Claire Falkenstein, John Lee, Harold Cousins, Helen Phillips, and Ralph Stockpole.
Miss Dorthea Speyer, responsible for the selection, states that they were chosen "not only for excellence of individual works, but also for the insight into the inherent American qualities in the work of artists living abroad and for reflection of the international character of 20th century art.
Former Anaheim Student Named USC Trustee
A former Anaheim Union High School student was elected as trustee of the University of Southern California, it was announced today by W. S. Duniway, college publicist.
J. R. Fluor, a USC alumnus, graduated from Anaheim Union in 1939.
Fluor, also named as member of the Student and Alumni Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees, is chief executive officer of The Fluor Corporation, Ltd.
He is married to the former Lilian M. Breaux, graduate of Marywood High School in Anaheim. The couple has two sons, John Robert, 17, and Peter James, 15. The family resides at 1225 So..Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena.
