LA Labor Leader Chairs Special Kuchel Committee
Bryan P. Deavers, California state Labor for Kuchel Committee chairman, this week announced that James Twombley, Los Angeles, had accepted the Southern California Labor for Kuchel chairmanship.
"U. S. Senator Thomas H. Kuchel has enlisted the leadership of one of labor's most powerful men in James Twombley," Deavers said.
"The Southern California chairman is assistant business manager of Operating Engineers of Local Twelve. He is an executive board member of the State Building and Construction Trades Council and a civil engineer. The force of his position will be geared right into the effort of organized labor to reelect Tom Kuchel to the U.S. Senate."
Deavers, who is president of the State Building and Construction Trades Council, pointed out that statewide his organization has nineteen international unions, 475 union affiliates and represents not less than 600,000 Cali government for a moment that is possible. Then there is the fuel and utility tax on motor vehicles. The taxes raise nearly $350 million each year. Nearly all of it goes for building and maintaining free ways and highways.
If you smoke, you contribute a few more tax dollars each year. How many cigarettes do you think are smoked in California a year? According to the State Board of Equalization, a conservative estimate is around 40 billion. The tax on cigarettes is three cents per pack but there are rumors that may be increased in a year or so if present state spending continues.

Sixty-Two OC Deputies Complete Red Cross First Aid Courses
Orange County Sheriff James A. Musick this week announced that sixty two of his deputies recently completed a ten-hour course in first aid conducted by the American Red Cross.
'Little U.N.' Now Attends SA College
United Nations in miniature again is reflected at Santa Ana College with 32 international students representing a total of 13 countries.
Visiting students were honored Sept 28 by the college and the Santa Ana Rotary Club at a dinner in the student union. Annual dinner dance for VISA students always attracts many Rotarians, service club district officials and college figures. Each student spoke briefly of his homeland, educational goals and personal background.
Paul Andres, counselor and advisor of the international group at SAC, said the college chooses to maintain a quota of approximately 30 foreign students each semester, otherwise there would be a flood of applications from many countries. College has experienced an unusual benefit through the years from the cultures and backgrounds of the visitors. Club also includes many American students.
"Police officer represent authority to most citizens and are readily summoned and obeyed in times of emergency" said Sheriff Musick, "and the standard American Red Cross course in first aid is useful equipment for every police officer. It enables him to take command of situations requiring first aid and to redirect well-intentioned but potentially harmful actions by laymen into constructive assistance."
Demand Great
"The tremendous population increase in Orange County has magnified called-for services from the policy agency to the citizen" the Sheriff explained. "And the Sheriff's Department receives requests for emergency services ranging from assisting at major disasters such as the recent surge of airplane crashes in Orange County to delivering new-born babies in the police vehicle." Further evidence of the value of such training was the recent wounding of two Sheriff's deputies while arresting a suspect in Orange Park Acres. Deputies Oakley Waite and Robert Kelly were critically wounded by a suspect wanted on felony charges and Kelly's life was saved by Deputy Wayne Jarvis who arrived a moment later and stopped the flow of blood until Kelly arrived at the hospital.
The Sheriff added "The department received one hundred and forty-one requests for emergency medical aid in the past six months with heart attacks and convulsions heading the list."
