South Coast Academy
Of Arts Opens Doors
Art lovers and amateur painters in the Orange County area hail the opening of a new Art School at 353-A North Newport Blvd. Newport Beach. The South Coast Academy of Art, directed and founded by D. Logan Hill, prominent west coast artist and illustrator, has opened its doors to amateur and advanced art students.
The school will feature classes in oil and watercolor painting with evening classes on Monday and Tuesday, 7:30 to 10 p.m. The curriculum will include figure and portrait studies on Thursday evenings with costumed and undraped models. Saturday morning classes will be conducted for children 6-14 in basic design, drawing and sculpture and Saturday afternoons will be devoted to teen age painters.
An unusual feature of the Academy is a unique method for teaching landscape. Colored 35 millimeter slides will be projected on a screen for painting thus eliminating troublesome field trips. Roberta Hill, registrar for the Academy announces that the classes will be limited and those wishing to attend school should not delay registering. For further information and brochures call Mrs. Hill at 675-2825, or see your local art dealer.
Dale Logan Hill, director and founder of the South Coast Academy of Art and resident of Lido Isle, is an artist of wide and varied art experience covering 20 years in the graphis illustration field, during which time he was connected with several outstanding art studios in the East. For a period of years he enjoyed a connection with one of the major movie studios of Hollywood as head illustrator and more recently served as head illustrator and designer for the automotive industry in Detroit.
He has had excellent training in the fine arts field. He studied at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and later won scholarships to major art schools including the American Academy of Art in Chicago where he took individual instruction under some of the finest teachers in the midwest and east. He is an outstanding portrait painter having painted many film notables and other celebrities and is now winning additional recognition for his unusual palette knife technique in portraiture. He is well known for his versatility in any medium and his practical and simplified approach to any art problem makes him an excellent

'Maasai Night'
Set at Church
"MAASAI NIGHT" will challenge all members, friends, and visitors to Evangelical United Brethren Church Sunday evening Oct. 7, according to church workers.
The Maasai are a warrior tribe of East Africa, and were the ruler before the British came into that country. The Maasai are located right in the heart of the big game country, and it is almost impossible to think of the Maasai without also thinking of the many wild animals which share the Maasai Reserve with them.
Pictures of the Maasai tribe, a very proud and self-satisfied people will be shown by Missionaries Mr. and Mrs. C. Stauffacher beginning at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
A set of slides on the Rendilli tribe of the Northern Frontier of Kenya will also be shown. The Rendilli tribe live in seim-desert, in widely scattered areas where their vast herds of camels graze on what little grass they can find. The language of the Rendilli has never been reduced to writing. Teaching them and working with them will be discussed by the Stauffachers.
Adult services begin at 7 p.m. at the EUB Church, Lemon and South Sts., Anaheim. Everyone is welcome.
Marywood Merit Scholars Cited
Sister Marie Helen, S.P., principal of Marywood High School, Anaheim, announced last week that two of the school's students have been named simifinalists in the 1962-63 Merit Scholarship competition.
She said they became semifinalists in the 1962-63 merit competition through their outstanding performance in the National Merit Scholarship qualifying test, the first step in the eighth annual merit program. The students cited for their high achievement are Lynn Leverson and Christine Tolomeo.
They are among approximately 11,000 seniors throughout the country who attained semifinalist status. Each semifinalist now moves a step closer to winning a four year merit scholarship to the college of his choice.
"Nothing could be sillier," perhaps Richards has a low opinion of the intelligence of the California voter," Sumner continues.
"Any schoolboy knows that a is seldom introduced and pass without change. Amendments offered to improve and clarify these a conscientious senator Kuchel supports. Opponents the bill, on the other hand, o try to cripple it with amendments — these must be defeated."
"Senator Kuchel is noted his independence and he tries vote as he thinks best for the country and California. Richard brags that, if elected, he would be a rubber stamp for the President.
This 100 per cent supply claim can only mean that would never cast an independent thoughtful vote on anything Sumner concluded.

Demo's For Kuchel Formed
United States Senator Thomas H. Kuchel's campaign for re-election moved forward on a bi-partisan basis today with formation of a Democrats for Kuchel organization in Southern California.
Chairmanship of the committee, covering eight counties from Santa Barbara to San Diego, has been accepted by Carl A. Stutsman, Jr., long-time Democrat and veteran Los Angeles attorney, it was announced by Kuchel in Washington.
"I am honored and gratified that Carl Stutsman, Jr., a prominent member of the bar, has again indicated his willingness to support the record evidence of in Washington.
"This is gratifying evidence of the non-partisan support I have been receiving.
"I am also gratified that many leading Democrats and thousands of registered Democrats in all walks of life have again chosen to support my candidacy at the forthcoming election.
"I shall do everything in my power to merit the confidence they have expressed in me."
Statement
In accepting the Democrats for Kuchel chairmanship for Southern-California, Stutsman issued this statement:
"Tom Kuchel has served the people of California since 1936 and has achieved an outstanding record in Washington for the past 10 years.
He does not represent some of the people of California. He represents all of the people of California.
"As responsible Democrats and responsible voters, we have made a thorough examination of Tom Kuchel's background and record as opposed to that of his rival, Richard Richards.
"We cannot endorse the hand-picked candidate of the California Democratic Council whose policies and practices over the years have been questionable, to say the least.
"We cannot endorse a man for United States senator who, in the past, has accepted the support of the Communist Daily People's World and that of Harry Bridges' left-wing Longshoremen's Union.
"We cannot afford to trade the senior ranking in the Senate, the wisdom and the high principles of Tom Kuchel for the haphazardly inexperience of his opponent.
"I urge all my fellow Democrats to examin the records and then make the only possible choice — to return Senator Thomas H. Kuchel to Washington on Nov. 6."
Democrats for Kuchel county committees are being formed for a coordinated campaign between now and election day, Stutsman said.
Stutsman is a member of the law firm of Hill, Farrer and Bar-
State legislator Richard Richter has either become a special commissioner or his abysmal knowledge about the kings of the United States state is beginning to show.
Senator Sumner, Orange Countyigator and Southern Californiaactor of People for Kuchel, urged today.
Chards and his cohorts are repeatedly trying to mislead the public when they claim that U.S. Senator Thomas H. Kuchel is doing something wrong when he tries to amend a Senate measure then votes for the final bill, and on its over-all effect.
Nothing could be sillier, or maps Richards has a low opinion of the intelligence of the Cali-va voter," Sumner continued. Schoolboy knows that a bill would introduce and pass out change. Amendments are needed to improve and clarify—a conscientious senator like Kuchel supports. Opponents of Bill, on the other hand, often cripple it with amendments—these must be defeated. Senator Kuchel is noted for independence and he tries to as he thinks best for the Army and California. Richards is that, if elected, he would rubber stamp for the Presidency.
100 per cent support can only mean that he never cast an independent, faithful vote on anything," Concluded.
Security Law Explained
According to Ralph A. Dillman, district manager, of the Santa Ana Social Security Office, more than one million eligible people 65 years old and older have not yet applied for their social security payments. In Orange County it is estimated there are about 3500 who could qualify for payments. Many have not applied because they are still working, he said.
However, since last year it has been possible for many older people to collect their full or partial retirement benefit even though they still work.
Under the changed law, those eligible for social security retirement payments may earn up to $1200 a year and still receive all benefit checks for the year. If earnings are over $1200, the new rules frequently permit the payment of some social security benefits. The amount payable depends on how much over $1200 a person earns and on the amount he would normally receive from social security each month.
For each $2 of earnings between $1200 and $1700 only $1 of benefit payments is withheld. For earnings above the $1700 bracket, $1 of benefits is withheld for each $1 of earnings.
One example, Dillman said, would be a married couple who are both 67 years old, fully retired, and eligible for $1800 a year in social security benefits. Even if the husband were working and earned $2,000 a year, he and his wife would be entitled to social security benefits of $1250 for that year under the new rule.
