Huge, 167-Acre Complex Planned For Anaheim Area A multi-million dollar "Four City Center," constituting one of the largest current commercial projects in Southern California, will be developed immediately on a strategically-located 167-acre site in Orange County, Appel-Slaten Development Company of Los Angeles announced today. The commercially-zoned property, recently acquired by Appel-Slaten for $4.25 million in private funds from Federal Bankruptcy Court is within the City of Orange and is almost equi-distant from the downtown areas of Santa Ana, Anaheim and Garden Grove. It is 3½ miles southeast of Disneyland. Donald Appel, Larry G. Slaten Temple Rites To Be Friday Temple Beth Sholom of Orange County celebrated the first anniversary of its new "House of Peace" with two special activities arranged especially for county newcomers of the Jewish faith. Sabbath Services Friday acquainted new Jewish residents in the area with members of the congregation, Rabbi Morton C. Fierman and the Temple staff, and representatives of the various Temple auxiliaries. An open house was held the preceding Sunday, to show newcomers through the building, Orange County's first and only structure and William Weiss, senior partners of the firm, announced that the commercial complex will include a 70-acre shopping center, luxury motor hotel, high-rise and garden - type apartments, commercial office buildings, a medical building, a convalescent hospital, theaters, restaurants and a variety of recreational facilities. Baskin, president of Continental Bank of Los Angeles who, in conjunction with Chase Mahattan Bank of New York, acted as consultants to Appel-Slaten in negotiations for the property, said the sale represented one of the largest all-cash purchases of commercially zoned land in the history of Orange County. He and Slaten described the planned development as a major step forward in the burgeoning growth of Orange County. Site lies within an area bounded by Chapman Avenue, Placentia Boulevard, Lewis Street, the Santa Ana Frpeway, and the route of the future Garden Grove Freeway. OCC To Offer Arts Courses Two courses of special interest this year in the evening college at Orange Coast College are in the field of Theatre Arts. Acting fundamentals covers all the material in the basic course in acting presented in the regular arranged especially for county newcomers of the Jewish faith. The course is designed to cover basic needs in speech, stage deportment, interpretation of the written word, character analysis for plays, rehearsing and directing short scenes including improvisation. Theatrical makeup is designed to meet all the requirements, involving theory and technique, for stage makeup. It includes perfecting the face by makeup, techniques in applying character makeup including the use of artificial hair, face putty, and other special effects. The students also participate in the regular theatre productions by being in charge of makeup. The evening course is the same as a day course in credit and material. Gubernatorial Candidates Will Speak At Disneyland Governor Edmund G. Brown and former Vice President Richard Nixon will be the featured speakers at the annual conference of the League of County Employee Associations, according to an announcement made today by Julian Johnson, president of the League. Johnson beamed, “We are delighted that both gubernatorial candidates have accepted the invitation to take part in our 22nd annual conference.” Big confab will take place October 11-13 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. The Orange County Employee’s Association, celebrating their silver anniversary, will host the three-day conference. Thad Pelkowski, president of the local employee group, predicts the 1962 conference will be the biggest and best in the League’s 22-year history. “Last year 160 delegates took part in our conference in Bereleley. This year, we are anticipating 500 delegates — and maybe even more,” he smiled. League of County Employee Associations was established in 1940 to establish better working conditions for County employees, to improve the morale of these employees to create additional welfare benefits, and to promote greater efficiency in the performance of their duties. “Our main objective”, adds Pelkowski, “is the over-all improvement of public service”.
