'School's Out' Celebrated by Students As Anaheim High Summer Session Ends
gebra I, II; Plane Geometry;
Musical chimes will sound at 12:15 p.m. this Friday to melodically announce to 553 Anaheim High School students that summer school is officially over.
The chimes, a utility employed while the bell system is being revamped, have been in use daily on the high school campus since June 25.
The students have been registered in six academic categories: Business education, English, foreign language, industrial arts, mathematics, and science.
The program of studies has been offered to enable individual students to make up deficiencies, to enrich and accelerate their programs and to strengthen skills and understandings.
New instructional techniques, such as team teaching and flexible scheduling, have been employed to better enable students to meet the district course of study standards in a minimum period of classroom clock hours of instruction.
Among the specific courses offered have been: personal typing, Typing I; English II, III, IV; Spanish I, II; French I; German
Students Flock to Summer School As Emphasis Changes to Enrichment
Time was, a youngster would go to school in the summer only because he'd flunked a subject and had to make it up.
Right now, however, hundreds of thousands of boys and girls are taking summer courses entirely on their own volition, reports the Institute of Life Insurance. Among them are:
- Students who take extra courses they cannot fit into the regular school curriculum.
- Gifted pupils concentrating on a particular field of study, such as language, mathematics or science.
- Students who for reasons of their own want to speed up their graduation.
- Those who want courses (such as Biology I, II; Plane Geometry; Musical chimes will sound at 12:15 p.m. this Friday to melodically announce to 553 Anaheim High School students that summer school is officially over.
The emphasis is definitely shifting, so that most school systems now speak of "enrichment," "advanced work for the gifted," and "acceleration" as major goals.
Among the summer courses now offered are Russian and other languages, Great Books, rapid reading and creative writing; collegebound students obtain special benefits from such subjects as pre-college English and "brief-hand" for note-taking and languages. In many schools talented students may take advanced courses in mathematics and science. Some places welcome students from outside the school.

—Students who take extra courses they cannot fit into the regular school curriculum.
—Gifted pupils concentrating on a particular field of study, such as language, mathematics or science.
—Students who for reasons of their own want to speed up their graduation.
—Those who want courses (such as driver education) which cannot be scheduled for all pupils during the regular school year.
While many summer schools still provide only the traditional make-up and remedial courses,
MILK BREAK — Linda Burt, East Anaheim student at summer school, takes time for refreshment during the mid-morning break. The schedule allows 15 minutes in the middle of the four-hour class session for students to walk around, talk to friends and to relax in general.
IN BINGEN WOHNT EIN BISCHOFF — “In Bingen lived a Bishop.” Students in Mrs. Hildegarde Evan’s German II class listen to the voice of their German-born teacher coming through the ear phones. Ray Thomas and his classmates lis-

Howard Goodman To Spend Year In Europe as Exchange Teacher
The closing of summer school Friday means more to Howard Goodman, teacher of biology and chemistry at Anaheim High School, than a mere closing of a few textbooks. It means rushing home for last minute packing before leaving Monday for a trip to England as a exchange teacher.
Goodman won the trip on a Fulbright exchange grant sponsored by the government. One hundred teachers were chosen from 2000 applications with some fifty teachers going to England.
Goodman will spend one year in England, returning in time to take up his duties for the 1963-64 term at Anaheim High School. While there he will teach biology and chemistry at Wellington College, an associate school of Oxford.
New York will be Goodman's first stop before boarding the S.S. America with his wife and two children, Martin Melvin, 4, and Allan Ross, 2½. The family will tour Europe and possibly part of the Near East before settling down in England.
Asked if he expected to find the students in England different from American students, he stated,
"I think students are basically the same everywhere. Intelligence is the same and discipline is the same. There may be a difference in the home training which means the students in England may be more respectful of their teachers."
A native of New York City, Goodman has lived with his family in California for the past ten years, the last seven in Orange County. They make their home at 5834 Los Amigos, Buena Park.
