Why do you keep following me around?" he asked me once." Coincidence," I said." I just happen to be going your way." Once I caught him standing at the bookcase." Ah! he cried leaping out at him." What are you doing by the bookcase?" "Looking for something," he said giving me a puzzled look." So! And what might that something be?" He pulled out the E volume of the encyclopedias." This will give another fisherman a chance to go and will keep your name off the "no show" list many landings are compiling. Let's Go Fishing The red hot albacore, which are causing the deep sea party boat landings to re-write the record books on total catches and individual efforts, are still milling around in a huge area 12 to 20 miles east-southeast of the east end of San Clemente Island. And, if it is possible to add more ice to the wonderful fishing cake already in our area, comes a report from down south that a new, bigger school is now on its way up from the Guadalupe Island area in Mexican waters. Everyone hopes this will be an "inside" run of longfins between San Clemente and Catalina Island and the mainland. The it will be possible for the small boaters to get into the action. At present it is a 4½ to 5⅝ hour run to the fishing grounds, a trip that should only be attempted on a properly equipped, larger boat. Fisherman are turning out in droves to seek the albacore and the deep sea landing operators are making every effort to accommodate as many as possible. Newest boat to go into service is ion, which has been pulled from the regular half-day schedule and converted into an albacore special. The Frontier is also leaving daily from Balboa and Seasport Landing, in Newport Beach, is sending out the Sea Raider and Jet daily for albacore. Reservations for all trips are a must. If you have reserved a bunk and fishing room in advance, and then find you will be unable to make the trip, please call your landing and notify them as soon as possible. This will give another fisherman a chance to go and will keep your name off the "no show" list many landings are compiling. Newport Harbor Lady Anglers, 20 strong, re-wrote the club record book last week on a charter trip on the Jet from Seasport Landing when all of the gals limited out with 10 albacore each. At the Balboa Pavilion, Thelma Bradford, 878 W. 18th St., Costa Mesa, with a 28 lbs. longfin, and Fred H. Reed of No. 14 Chuckwagon Rd., Rollin Hills, with a 34 lbs. albacore, both won the landing's Cash Bonanza. It now takes a 35 lb. albicole to win the money. Despite all the excitement caused by "albacore fever" there is a dedicated group of fishermen that never leave Newport Bay, winter or summer. Using extra-light equipment in many instances, they get their fishing thrills from a skiff. And if you have ever tried it you can see why. These experts are coming back to the landings daily with big halibut and bass plus an occasional barracuda or bonito. In season they score on yellowfin croaker, which are just about due.
