Memory Garden Is Weedpatch By DORIS LEE The Experts have come up with some new discoveries about human memory, and it looks like there may be some hope for me after all. Not only do they reveal some findings that lift me out of the featherbrain class but they also offer some sound advice for improving my memory. Women, it turns out, have better memories for names and faces of pretty girls. Introduce a man to a pretty girl, the experts say, and later ask him about her and chances are the most you'll get out of him is "Zowie!" or "Some dish!" But a woman can give you a detailed description from hair to shoe — assets, defects — everything. I've found that to be quite true. I've noticed it with Charlie. Last Saturday was a good example. "Did you notice that blonde sitting at the next table at the Charter House last night?" I asked him. "I sure did. Some dish!" he said. "Do you remember what she looked like?" I asked. "Yeah," he enthused, "like some dish." "Well, she wasn't perfect, you know," I said, bridling. "She wasn't?" "Of course not. Didn't you notice her eyebrows?" She was nothing." "Oh, I wouldn't say that," I said. "'She had a few things to her credit.'" "Like what?" "Her earlobes. They were lovely." He sighed in relief. "I knew I got excited about something. I just couldn't remember what it was." The experts have advanced a few suggestions for improving your memory and one is relaxation. You remember best when you're relaxed the most, they say. So instead of breaking your brain and getting all tensed up trying to remember something you forgot, you should forget the whole problem and go lie down and relax. It's guaranteed to pop the forgotten thing back into your mind. This method isn't without pitfalls, however. If you drop off to sleep the whole plan disintegrates, and with disturbing results if time is an important element. I tried it out the other day when I couldn't remember what it was I had to do at four o'clock. I spent fifteen minutes feeling nervous about it with no results, so I stretched out on the sofa and relaxed. The only thing that popped into my mind was a dream. In it I was lying on the sofa saying to myself: "Now..." Didn't you notice her eyebrows?" Unobservant "Well, no. To tell you the truth, I missed her eyebrows." "They were mismatched." "Mismatched?" I nodded, "One was arched and the other wasn't." "Gee, and I could have sworn she was some dish." "And she was sloppily dressed." What do you mean, sloppily? I thought everything clung pretty firmly. "I mean she wasn't neat. I saw a fleck of dandruff on her shoulder. On black that can be positively nauseating." "I'm glad I didn't see it then." And that's not all. There was a thread hanging from her hemline." That does it," he said with finality. "You've disillusioned me. The classes, all of which will be located at the Buena Park BY THOMAS KUCHEL U. S. Senator, California wise and sage man in the our Constitution was adoptmented on the inevitabilities of taxes. Were he alive today, amin Franklin would truly seen inevitability at work. After a year of hearings in the state of Representatives, the state received a bill called Revenue Act of 1962. It is pages long. It is complex, sical, and it affects many, people. There is at least one controververy page. Forty-six pages is measure allegedly lay out explained method for collecting on dividend and interest interest in his administraPresident Kennedy recommed that Congress repeal the per cent tax credit, eliminate 50 exclusion, and establish a holding tax on dividend and est income. Was one of the first Senators to object to these recommations. I voted against them they last came before Senate in 1960. But, regrettathe House of Representatives now approved the withholdprocedures. The Treasury conceded 92 percent of the divident and intercome is reported. Eight percent not. Now to get back this per cent, the Treasury prospects a straight across-the-board percent withholding with no exptions. The House did provide some options, which in effect creonly confusion. I believe the effect of this collection would in reality result in withholding. Thus it might be almost a new tax. Assume a retired couple, both 65 entitled to a maximum amount income credit. Assume receive $5,000 a year in diviand interest income. Under house bill, $1,000 would be held. But their actual tax liaid at the end of the year be $87. Thus, $913 would be over-withheld from this file for almost one year. This represents a decrease of 19 percent in the usable income of that couple. The fantastic thing in the House bill is that there is no require-ment for the payor to notify the recipient of the amount withheld. For every 80 cents he receives in dividend, interest, and patron-age refunds, the recipient must assume that in reality he has receiveda dollar. Therefore, he is required to adjust his tax forms accordingly. Instead of simplifying our tax laws, the bill quite ingeniously complicates them. If passed, it will probably be known as "The Tax Accountants and Tax Lawyers Relief Act of 1962." There are, I think, reasonable alternatives to what has been recommended. The Internal Revenue Service within the next three years will have automatic data processing equipment. It could relate the taxpayer's account with all income he receives by the use of an identification number such as his Social Security number. The statute of limitations could be extended from three to six years so that any individual now failing to report his income would be subject to civil or criminal penalties once the data process-ing equipment would take effect. Three courses in Business Administration will be held in Orange County by University of California Extension this summer. The classes, all of which will be located at the Buena Park High School, will include "Managerial Accounting," beginning June 19; "Government Contract Administration," beginning June 18; and Advance Program Control Techniques — PERT," also starting June 18. UNITED STATES the ban Serving 26 Southern California Communities th Letters to the Editor Editor Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, California Sir: The comments made by William Gordon and Jim Townsend are more to the liing of the Average American Citizen than are those Paul C. Burns. I believe you'll find the average citizen will be just a little ill, when he realizes such people as Paul C. Burns are among us. To me, Paul C. Burns represents the NEW FRONTIER type citizen who has grown up these last 30 years. A breed of citizen that is unable and unwilling to support the principles this REBUBLIC was founded on; a person that finds it easier to settle something better than the rest; a part of a group that would hand this country and its enterprise system over without a fight. In other words, Mr. Editor, a parasite on the backs FREEDOM LOVING U. S. CITIES. Don't you agree? Of course, you do not, as you too have been a victim of NEW REALISM and no longer have the ability to judge the system you live in. While we are on the subject, I think your publisher, Virgil Pinkley, has a lot of nerve to bring his middle-of-the-road (that's giving him more credit than he deserves) journal into Orange County. I have no idea that we could do much better if he spread his nerve gas some other country. The Anaheim Gazette always has been a poor excuse for a newspaper but with the present off, it has become a dismiserable have a lot of nerve crying about Hitler. The fact that he has been dead for some 17 years doesn't seem to matter. Why not jump on Mr. K., Castro, Jeagen and a few that are living under the red banner. We don't need the past to remind us about freedom, specially with so many dictators running communist nations. Come to think of it, if we had waited a few months before we started helping Stalin, Hitler could have put Russia down for good. However, I suppose our State Department would have set him up again. Yes, Middle of the Readers get hit by traffic going both ways. Too bad it can't knock a little sense or patriotism into their heads. LONG LIVE Jim Townsend and William Gordon, what would this country be without citizens like them? The designation of your final paragraph as 'Final Thought' is rather amusing. It is apparent you have been doing very little in the way of thinking; you certainly have been doing very little reading. If you had, you would have noted Mr. K. and Castro have been getting their shares of shots in the Gazette. Hitler is important in as much as it was through people like yourself that he was able to rise to power. The communists are a definite threat to this country, the greatest threat we face at the moment. However, we do not want fascism any more than we want communism. An angry man is a dangerous man. Mr. Adams, he cannot Speech. Is this what radicals intend if they took over the country — to shut off all opposition voicing an opinion? Can't you and those like you understand that it's this fanalical demand on your part that those who don't want to goose-step shut up? As I said before, communism is a fearful threat, but the speecher of the swastika is still too familiar to forget. Don't you and your constituents feel persecuted, Mr. Adams. We're with you all the way when the time comes to take on the communists. As a matter of fact, as usual, we'll be the one who will do the real fighting and winning, just as we have since 1776 — and no one is going to goose step Americans onto the battlefield. Don't flatter yourselves into thinking you present any other danger to clear-thinking Americans than the quite ordinary danger of an angry man being unable to think clearly when clear-thinking is needed. As for Mr. Burns, if you had read my answer to him, you would have seen that on the whole, I disagreed with him. Of course, you didn't want to see As for songs of social love, if your tune isn't that, what is it? We have no quarrel with the American way of life and the way Americans approach their problems. You are the one who is screaming we are going to hell on a jet plane. Have you ever seen and heard those thunder and fire preachers in the South? I think your publisher, VirPinkley, has a lot of nerve to sing his middle of the - and (that's giving him more credit than he deserves) journalnial into Orange County. I have idea that we could do much better if he spread his nerve gas some other country. The Anaheim Gazette always has been a poor excuse for a newspaper but with the present off, it has become a disgrace. This country does finally lose independence, it will have been newspapers and staffs like yours, it applied the coupe de grace. It this in your paper and sing our usual social song of woe. My outlook Richard N. Adams 709 W. Northgate Anaheim, California Final thought: Boy, do you Hitler is important in as much as it was through people like yourself that he was able to rise to power. The communists are a definite threat to this country, the greatest threat we face at the moment. However, we do not want fascism any more than we want communism. An angry man is a dangerous man, Mr. Adams. He cannot think clearly. All he is capable of is calling names and attaching labels onto people he doesn't agree with. He forgets that it was a generation raised under New Dealism who turned back the Nazis and the Japs 17 years ago.
